Subulatus Yang & Z h an g

Subulatus Yang & Zhang, 2001: 177

Type species: Subulatus bipunctatus Yang & Zhang

Distribution. China (Sichuan, Hunan, Yunnan).

Description. Body medium-sized, 6.0– 7.5 mm in length (including tegmen). Front of head slightly conically produced; vertex slightly shorter than wide, about as long as pronotum, with paired preapical spots and median apical spot black; lateral margin carinate; median longitudinal carina lamellate, median carina and submarginal carina concentrated on head; area between median carina and submarginal carina slightly concave. Frontoclypeus broad, with median longitudinal carina strongly elevated, laterally obliquely striate; lora nearly reaching apex of clypellus. Pronotum broad, wider than head. Scutellum triangular, about as long as pronotum, with transverse depression distinct. Forewing with veins prominent, with R1a present; five apical cells; appendix very narrow.

Male pygofer with elongate, slender ventral process arising near base, base wider than the distal half. Subgenital plate elongate, macrosetae irregularly distributed. Aedeagus somewhat bulbous; with pair of curved processes arising dorsally from atrium and extended posterad; distal half subulate, arched in lateral view, with many small scalelike bumps; gonopore apical. Style stout, with beaklike apex of apophysis having elongated lateral angle. Connective Y-shaped with stem longer than arms.

Remarks. This genus is similar to Carinata Li & Wang , but they can be distinguished from each other by: 1) the shape of the male pygofer in side view; 2) aedeagal end of Subulatus with many scalelike bumps.

Description. Crown (Fig. 4) light yellow. Area surrounding ocelli with black marking. Eyes dark, ocelli brown (Fig. 4). Face (Fig. 6) light yellow, frontoclypeus with two black markings on each side of median longitudinal carina, middle area of clypellus with a black stripe, meeting area of crown and face with three black markings. Middle area of pronotum black, frontal and rear area white-yellow, scutellum (Fig. 4) black. Forewings (Figs 4–5) gray gray black, clavus and subcostal cell yellow. Hindwings gray.

Male pygofer (Fig. 7) triangular, longer than high, attenuate caudally, with elongate, slender ventral process arising near base. Subgenital plate (Fig. 8) elongate, with some fine setae on inside submargin and several long setae near apex. Aedeagus (Figs 9–11) somewhat bulbous; distal half compressed, recurved dorsally, without posterior projection near base of shaft. Other male genitalia characteristics as in Figs 7–13.

Female slightly longer than male; general coloration similar to that of male. Sternite VII (Fig. 14) similar to inverted triangle, posterior margin with small median tooth. First valvulae (Figs 15–16) elongate, curved dorsad towards apex, dorsal sculpturing indistinctly concatenate, ventral sculpturing imbricate. Second valvulae (Figs 17–18) sigmoid, slender in basal 2/3, apex with dorsal teeth more numerous, prominent and closely spaced. Other genitalia characteristics as shown in Figs 14–18.

Measurement. Length (including tegmen): ♂, 6.3–6.5mm; ♀, 6.4–6.7mm.

Host plant. Unknown.

Etymology. The species name is derived from the Latin word flavidus (flavid), indicating the color of clavus of the forewings.

Remarks. This species resembles Subulatus bipunctatus Yang & Zhang , but it can be distinguished by the shape of its aedeagus and little scaly bumps only on dorsal side.
