Type data: type status and whereabouts unknown ♀. Type locality: Tasmania (as Van Diemens Land).

Distribution: TAS.

Subfamily Pompilinae

The Australian Pompilinae is represented by 13 genera and 132 species. Species of Ctenostegus Haupt, 1930, Turneromyia Banks, 1941, Episyron Schiødte, 1837, Paracyphononyx Gribodo, 1884, Anoplius Dufour, 1834 and Pompilus Fabricius, 1798 primarily consist of wasps with a black integument, coloured or banded with grey/silvery pubescence. The “collaris” mimicry complex of Evans involves species of Ctenostegus, Turneromyia, Paracyphononyx and Episyron with black and orange colouration. Three species of Pompilinae, Batozonellus maculifrons (Smith, 1873), Anoplius (Orientanoplius) canifrons (Smith, 1855) and Pompilus cinereus (Fabricius, 1775) have extensive extralimital distributions.

Agenioideus Ashmead, 1902

Agenioideus Ashmead, 1902:85. Type species: Pompilus humilis Cresson, 1861 by original designation.

Aporoideus Ashmead, 1902:86. Type species: Pompilus sericeus Van der Linden, 1827 by original designation. Type species: Psammochares birkmanni Banks, 1910 by subsequent designation, see Pate, 1946:88. [synonymy by Wolf, 1985:231].

Evans (1950) synonymised Aporoides Ashmead, 1902 with Agenioideus. Consequently, the single species of Aporoides recorded from Australia is here listed under Agenioideus. None of the Australian species of Agenioideus have been placed to subgenera, viz. Ageniopompilus Priesner, 1955; Mimochares Wahis, 1970; Rufopompilus Wolf, 1970; Sericopompilus Howard, 1901; Enbanksia Evans, 1965 (as subgenus); Schizanoplius Cameron, 1904 (for priority of this name over Ridestus Banks, 1911 see Wahis (2000b:77)); Agenioideus Ashmead, 1902; Iberochares Wahis, 1970; Alloridestus Wolf, 1979.

Agenioideus expulsus Turner, 1917

Agenioideus expulsus Turner, 1917b:74. Psammochares Fabricius, 1796 has been suppressed (ICZN1946), but has as its type Sphex fusca Linnaeus, 1761, which is a synonym of Sphex viatica Linnaeus 1758, currrently placed in Anoplius. Between 1910 and 1917 Turner described or transfered several species to Psammochares, where they have remained unnoticed. Unlike the situation in Pompilus Fabricius, 1798 (see below) there is no dispute over the validity of the subgenera and consequently, those species not currently placed in subgenera are here listed as unplaced, rather than listed in Anoplius s. l.

Anoplius (Orientanoplius) Haupt, 1935

Orientanoplius Haupt, 1935a:315. The synonymy of Pompilus plumbeus (Fabricius, 1787) and Pompilus pulcher (Fabricius, 1798) with P. cinereus is here attributed to Evans (1972a), though Smith (1855) and Dalla Torre (1897) listed P. pul cher as a synonym of P. plumbeus in their catalogues and numerous other authors have also listed the synonymy prior to Evans. These previous synonymies appear to have been ignored and it is only after the publication of Evans (1972a) that the name Pompilus cinereus (Fabricius, 1775) appears to dominate in the literature.

Pompilus flavicornis Smith, 1855

Pompilus flavicornis Smith, 1855:163.
