Recently the presence of an undescribed species, often referred to as Batillaria zonalis was revealed by molecular data (Ozawa et al. 2009). This new species was recorded from Philippines, Hong Kong, Singapore, Vietnam, while true B. zonalis was not yet found in Vietnam. In the absence of molecular data we are unable to identify our species. At least some of published records of B. zonalis are the records of this new still unnamed species. Therefore the published data on ecology and distribution may apply both to B. zonalis and B. n. sp.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/F0542475BB5DFFC6FF28FE296C72FC08	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Reported to occur at low density in area of sparse mangroves and small plants, while it is not found in the shade of dense canopy. Sediment dweller without an obligate mangrove association. Appears to be an opportunistic and fast-growing species. It tends to avoid clean and well drained sand but occurs in big aggregations on wet areas, especially along runnels, drainage canals, ditches and channels on the beach (Vohra 1970; Reid & Ozawa 2016). Considered a pest in brackish water milkfish ponds where the lack of competitors and predators results in ecological release and population explosion. Very tolerant to hypoxia and adverse conditions, 1.5 to 50 ‰ salinity tolerance (Vohra 1970).

Obligate deposit feeder, food source reported to be macroalgae, bacteria and diatoms (Kamimura & Tsuchiya 2004).

In studied sites it was found on mud and sand banks of mangrove streams in upper and mid-intertidal zones in mangrove plantation and in natural mangroves, sometimes in extremely high densities.

Relation to mangroves. Onchidiidae are found in different habitats, including mangroves and some of them are probably mangrove-associated species (e.g. Dayrat 2009). Due to lack of species level (and sometimes even genus level) identifications, we did not assess their relationships to mangrove vegetation. In figure 9G an aggregation of onchidiid molluscs in Nha Phu is illustrated.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/F0542475BB48FFD3FF28FE376BB0FD4F	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
