De Wit (1956) selected the former collection (at P) as a lectotype. We could locate two collections by Harmand of B. bassacensis at P (P00798474, P00798475) of which P00798474 agrees with the protologue except the number 1540, which is listed as 1240. The specimen is deteminavited by H.C.D. de Wit in 1951 perhaps used while proposing Phanera bassacensis (Pierre ex Gagnep.) de Wit. The discrepancy in the number (1540 instead of 1240) appears to be a typographical error in the protologue. P00798474 also annotated by S. Saksuwan Larsen in 1977, indicating Bauhinia bassacensis Pierre ex Gagnep. var. bassacensis . Another sheet P00798475, appears to be a duplicate of P00798474 but has a different collection time viz. 2/77 (also see K000760864 with the same month and year of collection i.e. 2/77) and is without de Wit’s annotation and bears similar annotation of S. Saksuwan Larsen as found on P00798474. Although it has an isotype label affixed, it is not an exact duplicate of P00798474. Larsen & Larsen (1980) cited “TYPE: Harmand 1240, P”. Subsequently Larsen & Larsen (1996) cited ‘Type: Harmand 1240 (P, holo), which need to be brought down as syntype. In this case the number 1240 is attached to both the collections by Harmand at different times (2/1877: P00798475 and 3/1877: P00798474). It seems that 1240 was referred as identifier rather than a collection number. Bandyopadhyay (2014) cited Harmand 1540 as a lectotype (following de Wit, 1956) instead of Harmand ‘1240’ was an error which is corrected here (Art. 9.2, Turland et al., 2018).

	https://treatment.plazi.org/id/E36787C9FF9D3C79BAC6F16DFD25FEFA	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Hose s.n. ‘1014 P’ (P [P00798564

digital image!]).

In the protologue of Bauhinia menispermacea Gagnep., Gagnepain (1912) cited a collection from Borneo by Haviland et Hose which can be considered as original material. De Wit (1956) cited the holotype (Haviland et Hose 1014P) at K. Larsen & Larsen (1996) lectotypified probably the same collection at K and cited the isotype to be at P. However, we could not be able to locate the lectotype specimen at K. Nevertheless, we could locate another collection (Haviland 1014, K000760977) from Borneo and it bears a collection date of ‘Feb. 5/92’ signifying Feb 5 th 1892 which differs from the collection date stated in the protologue, i.e. Dec 14 th 1894. Moreover, none of the handwritings in pen or pencil on K000760977 is that of F. Gagnepain. Thus, it cannot even be an uncited original material. Furthermore, the specimen K000760977 bears the number 1014 proceeded by the abbreviation “e.c.e.a”, rather than 1014P. The abbreviation “e.c.e.a” refers date of collection of Haviland’s collections which was well illustrated by Stapf (1907). The number 1014 is the serial number against Bauhinia in the handwritten manuscript entitled ‘List of plants coll. by Dr. G.D. Haviland, Borneo’ (Haviland, 1892).

According to Stafleu & Cowan (1976), the herbarium and type specimens of F . Gagnepain are housed at P . We could able to locate a pertinent specimen from Borneo by Haviland et Hose 1014 P (P00798564). It also has an illustrative rendering of floral components by Gagnepain on a separate piece of paper. It also agrees with specimen details cited in the protologue. Furthermore, it would be pertinent to say that Larsen & Larsen (1996) cited the P specimen as a duplicate of the K specimen: Haviland et Hose 1014 P . This cannot be proved or disproved as Haviland et Hose 1014 P could not be located at K.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/E36787C9FF9C3C79BAFFF6A4FC34FE28	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
