DA1E305CFFE4FFF3FF47FBE3FBDBFEA6.taxon	discussion	Note: — The protologue of P. benedicta does explicitly show a single collection as type, Shafer 4025 (22 – 26 February 1910); however, Barnhart (in Britton 1920) did not use the term “ holotype ” or mention any herbarium housing the specimen (s). Casper (1966, 2019) stated that the “ holotype ” from NY was destroyed in 1943 at B during World War II when in loan. The family Lentibulariaceae is not listed among the material saved from the General Herbarium (Hiepko 1987), however, there is no record that this specimen was at B at any point. Moreover, it is not among the type specimens photographed at B before 1943 and kept in the collection of the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago (Merrill 1943, Grimé & Plowman 1986). Although Barnhart’s types are mostly in NY, there is no record of Pinguicula specimens collected by Shafer and kept in NY (Matthew Pace, pers. comm., 15 November 2021); therefore, no information is known to support Casper’s assumption. Shafer’s collections from Cuba are currently housed in several herbariums, mainly in the United States of the America and the only specimen traced that fits the one indicated as type of P. benedicta is at A (00093357!) and is dated 23 February 1910. It has no original handwritten label and the typed label has the annotation “ type ”. This specimen has been speculated to be the “ holotype? ” (Shimai 2017) or pointed out as original material (Schlauer 2019) and finally designated as the lectotype by Greuter & Rankin Rodríguez (2022). I agree with the typification, however, it is worth noticing that there is the possibility that the specimen at A could be the holotype. The citation of the date that appears in the protologue was corrected according to Art. 9.2 of the ICN (Turland et al. 2018). Additionally, since Casper (2003, 2004, 2007, 2019) was unable to clarify the nomenclature status of P. benedicta due to the lack of a type specimen, he described nine species from material traditionally regarded as P. benedicta. Among them, P. toldensis was treated as a later synonym of P. caryophyllacea by Casper himself (Casper 2019). Nonetheless, since the oldest name was fixed by the designation of a lectotype, P. caryophyllacea was synonimized under P. benedicta (Greuter & Rankin Rodríguez 2022), because from the species within the “ P. benedicta - group ”, it is the one that better fit Barnhart’s species concept and the designated lectotype. The isotype of P. toldensis supposedly housed at HAJB was not found and is presumed lost.	en	Domínguez, Yoannis (2024): Clarifying the status of Caribbean Pinguicula (Lentibulariaceae) type specimens. DA1E305CFFE6FFF2FF47FF63FDB9FE70.taxon	discussion	Note: — Casper (2004, 2019) did not see the specimen at HAJB that he designated as holotype and to date it has not been found in the collection (Eldis R. Bécquer, pers. comm., 17 April 2023). Thus, the isotype housed at JE is here designated as lectotype. Moreover, the gathering cited in the protologue as “ HFC- 799693 ” contains a typographic error; the correct number was cited by Casper (2019) as “ HFC- 79693 ” and can also be checked in the photograph of the isotype included in the protologue.	en	Domínguez, Yoannis (2024): Clarifying the status of Caribbean Pinguicula (Lentibulariaceae) type specimens. DA1E305CFFE6FFF2FF47FDDEFDAEFA04.taxon	discussion	Note: — The protologue of P. casabitoana refers to a single collection as type: Jiménez 3029, without flagging it as holotype or mentioning any herbarium housing the specimen (s). Casper (2019) cited the “ holotype ” as housed at JBSD although he did not see it. Through communication with JBSD staff it was confirmed that this specimen is not in the extant collection (Elizabeth Séptimo, pers. comm., 3 December 2021). After the death of J. J. Jiménez, his personal herbarium and library were donated to the herbarium UCMM at the “ Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra ” (Zanoni 1983). However, communication with UCMM staff revealed that no specimen that matches the citation in the protologue is in the collection (Juan F. García Gil, pers. comm., 13 December 2021). Three specimens of the gathering cited by Jiménez were traced (JE, US and USD) and none of them have indication that allows the assumption of them being used by Jiménez when elaborating the protologue. There is the possibility that the specimen at USD may have been used by Jiménez when preparing the protologue. It bears a handwritten label (Fig. 1) but it was not possible to conclude that the writing belongs to Jiménez (Ruth H. Bastardo, pers. comm., 12 January 2023). The specimen at USD (USD 00004617!) is selected as the lectotype of P. casabitoana. For the name P. cladophila, Ernst (1961) cited Ekman H 14051 as the type but he did not mention any herbarium housing the material. Four specimens from Ekman’s collection were found at LL, NY, S and US. Casper (1966, 2019), by citing the specimen at S as “ holotype ” and the one at NY as “ isotype ”, made his intention clear and inadvertently designated Ekman H 14051 at S as the lectotype. Herewith, Casper’s selection is accepted but the citations are corrected to lectotype and isolectotypes according to Art. 9.10 of the ICN (Turland et al. 2018).	en	Domínguez, Yoannis (2024): Clarifying the status of Caribbean Pinguicula (Lentibulariaceae) type specimens. DA1E305CFFE0FFF4FF47FD65FA9FFABA.taxon	discussion	Note: — The protologue lists three gatherings: Jack 6794 (5 December 1928), Bailey [12443] (17 March 1929) and Jack [7942] (25 April 1930); it specifies Jack 6794 as the type but did not use the term holotype or mention any herbarium housing the specimen (s). Fresh material from the type locality was also used by Barnhart (1931) when preparing the description and by Mary E. Eaton who prepared the accompanying illustration. Casper (2019) cited the “ holotype ” as housed at NY; however, there is no material of Pinguicula collected by Jack in the extant NY collection (Matthew Pace, pers. comm., 15 November 2021). Specimens that match the collections cited by Barnhart (1931) have been traced at US (00136349! [Jack 6794] and 01068927! [Jack 7942]), BH (BH 000011923! [Bailey 12443]), and NY (02852453! [Bailey 12443]). Moreover, another one of Jack’s specimens with the same number of that on the specified type was found at US (01068928!) but it bears a different date (7 March 1929); therefore, it seems that Jack’s number (6794) may have been applied to some of his P. jackii ’ s specimens despite it having originated from different gatherings. Shimai (2017) cited the specimen “ Jack 6794, 5 December 1928 ” at US as “ holotype ”; however, Shimai’s work conflicted with Arts. 7.10, 7.11 and 29.1 of the ICN (Turland et al. 2018) and lectotypification of P. jackii remained necessary. Herewith, the specimen Jack 6794 (US barcode 00136349!) is designated as the lectotype; and, since the date on the second specimen Jack 6794 at US is different, it is disregarded as isolectotype.	en	Domínguez, Yoannis (2024): Clarifying the status of Caribbean Pinguicula (Lentibulariaceae) type specimens. DA1E305CFFE0FFF7FF47F92DFAA1FE5A.taxon	discussion	Note: — The protologue of P. lignicola does explicitly indicate Shafer’s collection on 24 February 1910 as type (Shafer 4031) without flagging it as holotype or citing the herbarium. Barnhart (in Britton 1920) also cited the specimens Shafer 8065 and Ramsden s. n. but did not specify the herbarium housing the material. Casper (2019) cited the “ holotype ” as housed at NY although he did not see it. No Pinguicula specimen collected by Shafer exists in the extant NY collection (Matthew Pace, pers. comm., 15 November 2021). Nonetheless, two Shafer’s specimens that partially match the collections cited in the protologue were traced at A (00093359! and 00093358!). In Shafer 4031 the date appears as 23 February 1910 and in Shafer 8065 it is 24 February 1910 (24 – 30 in Barnhart’s citation), all other information agrees with the protologue. Moreover, the specimens bear typed labels and are annotated as “ type ” and “ syntype ” respectively. Shimai (2017) cited Shafer 4031 at A as “ holotype? ” but he did not make a decision on the specimen’s type status. Further analyses of these specimens suggest that they could have been the ones used and cited by Barnhart since Shafer 4031 contains three plants with flowers (more suitable as holotype) and Shafer 8065 contains four plants, one of them with undeveloped reproductive structures. Both specimens found at A can be considered original material under Art. 9.4 of the ICN (Turland et al. 2018); therefore, Shafer 4031 was selected as the lectotype and the citation of the date that appears in the protologue is corrected according to Art. 9.2 of the ICN (Turland et al. 2018).	en	Domínguez, Yoannis (2024): Clarifying the status of Caribbean Pinguicula (Lentibulariaceae) type specimens. DA1E305CFFE3FFF7FF47FD41FA9FFA6F.taxon	discussion	Note: — Despite many efforts to locate the holotype of P. lithophytica indicated in the protologue (HAJB-HFC 71790) it was not found in the extant collection of HAJB (Eldis R. Bécquer, pers. comm., 17 April 2023); therefore, it is presumed lost. In order to provide nomenclatural stability a lectotype needs to be designated. According to Art. 9.4 of the ICN, the only known original material for this name is represented by the photographs published in the protologue (Panfet Valdés & Temple 2008) and are suitable for a lectotype designation. The Figure 2 in the protologue that shows a “ Profile view of Pinguicula lithophytica flower ” has been selected as lectotype. However, since none of the published photographs show a complete plant, an additional representative specimen has been designated as epitype (Art. 9.9 of the ICN, Turland et al. 2018). The name Pinguicula jackii var. parviflora was invalidly published by Ernst (1961) because the indication of the type was omitted. Ernst (1961) did not cite any examined specimen in his work; therefore, it is impossible to trace original material (Art. 9.4 of the ICN, Turland et al. 2018) for the new name he proposed that remains invalid. Shimai (2017) attempted to validate Ernst’s name by designating a neotype that he published ineffectively, contrary to the requirements of Art. 29.1 of the ICN (Turland et al. 2018). Additionally, Casper (2019) cited the invalid name under the synonymy of P. jackii but according to the description given by Ernst (1961) and the analysis by Temple et al. (2023) the invalid name represents P. lithophytica and is not related to P. jackii.	en	Domínguez, Yoannis (2024): Clarifying the status of Caribbean Pinguicula (Lentibulariaceae) type specimens.
