There is an error in the MCZ catalog number for this specimen, 31966, in Johnson & Kingsolver (1973) and the correct catalog number is MCZ 32916 (MCZ Online Database). Later, Johnson (1984) described the male genitalia of specimens from the same data collection as the female holotype, and indicated it as not belonging to Sennius, but did not indicate its proximity with species of any other genus. In this study male specimens from USNM described by Johnson (1984) with the same data as the holotype were examined, and here this species is here transferred to Acanthoscelides, as Acanthoscelides infractus (NEW COMBINATION), due to proximity with species of megacornis group (Johnson 1990b) and the lack of hinge sclerites in the internal sac of male genitalia.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/C421D67B7E17FFB45ACAF9EDBF1AFE57	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Five specimens were received from NHRS, three labeled with the same data as in the original description, “Carthagenam – Columbiae” and “Coll. Chevrol”, one specimen with labels “Colum / bia” “Coll. Therefore, the best preserved male specimen is here designated as the lectotype. In this study, Bruchus aequinoctialis is transferred to Sennius, as Sennius aequinoctialis (NEW COMBINATION), due mainly by the presence of the hind femur with one tooth at the inner ventral margin and hinge sclerites in the internal sac of the male genitalia.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/C421D67B7E14FFB45ACAFE4DBDF5FB24	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. This specimen was received from BMNH, with labels identical to what was given in the original description, including Jekel's label “ Bruchus / batesii Jekel / Ins. Saund.”. A label was included to explicitly indicate this specimen as holotype. The female type of Bruchus batesii is in poor condition, with glue covering the ventral surface, partially covering the head and the lateral body, and there is a broken tooth on the hind femur. Only the external morphology was studied and compared with other Sennius species, since the type specimen of Bruchus batesii is a female. In Blackwelder’s catalog (1946), the specific name Acanthoscelides batesii (Fåhraeus, 1839) was misspelled as A. batesi, with the subsequent paper (Udayagiri & Wadhi, 1989) propagating this error. Following the instructions of ICZN (1999, Article 33.4), this species is here treated as Sennius batesii (NEW COMBINATION) based mainly on the characters: hind femur with one tooth at inner ventral margin, and internal sac of male genitalia with hinge sclerites.

I consider B. subaenescens Pic, 1931 (NEW SYNONYM) to be a subjective synonym of Bruchus batesii since there are no remarkable external differences. In the original description of Bruchus subaenescens, Pic does not indicate the number of specimens studied but Kingsolver (1976) designated as holotype the specimen studied.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/C421D67B7E15FFB55ACAFF06BB41FBE2	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Bruchus muricatus Sharp, 1885 is here transferred to Sennius due the hind femur with one tooth at inner ventral margin, and internal sac of male genitalia with hinge sclerites. The boundary between the genera Megasennius (monotypic) and Sennius was not supported in the cladistic analysis of the genus Sennius (Viana, 2014) . Except for the crossed hinge sclerites in male genitalia, other diagnostic characters described by Whitehead & Kingsolver (1975a) for Megasennius, such as an expanded postocular lobe, teeth near the base of the elytral striae, hind femur with large spine, hind tibia with long mucro, have been described in different combinations of characters for some South American Sennius species (Viana & Costa Ribeiro-2013a, b, 2014). Therefore this species is here treated as Sennius muricatus (NEW COMBINATION) and, as Megasennius is monotypic and Sennius muricatus is its type species, here Megasennius is also synonymized with Sennius (NEW SYNONYM).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/C421D67B7E13FFB35ACAFDF4BBA2FADD	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. One specimen was received from the MNHN with two of Pic’s conflicting handwritten labels “ Bruchus / alticola / Mexi <illegible letters>” and " v. rufopygus / Pic ", added bellow to the second extensive label. However, I concluded that this second label, “ alticola ? / <illegible letters> / var. a <illegible letters> / <illegible letters> pygid. / et une bomde / <illegible letters> / <illegible letters>”, show the doubts about the identification as Sennius alticola (Sharp 1885), followed by the label identifying as " v. rufopygus / Pic ". Since the locality on the label ( Mexi) is similar to the data given in the original description (Mexique) of Bruchus carneofasciatus var. rufopygus and the Pic’s handwritten label " v. rufopygus / Pic ", here this specimen is designated as lectotype . The examination of the Bruchus carneofasciatus v. rufopygus lectotype showed that it is a separate species from Bruchus carneofasciatus (junior synonym of Sennius transversesignatus). Therefore, Bruchus carneofasciatus v. rufopygus (Pic, 1930) is here proposed as Sennius rufopygus (Pic, 1930) (NEW STATUS and NEW COMBINATION).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/C421D67B7E10FFB05ACAFDB5BF51FAC1	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
