Atrichopogon argus Kieffer, 1916a: 86 (short description of female, 3 syntype females from Chip – Chip and Tainan); 1916b: 115 (record of a female from Paróe).

Diagnosis. Female eyes bare; proximal flagellomeres cylindrical; paratergite with 1 seta; scutellum with 4 bristles. Bases of setae on scutum with dark dots.

Description. Female. Eyes bare, broadly fused along the distance of 6 ommatidia. Flagellum very long, proximal flagellomeres cylindrical (Fig. 1 G), AR 2.65. Teeth of mandible small, about 40. Palpus 5– segmented, PR 2.69 (Fig. 1 A). Setae of scutum with dark dots at bases. Scutellum with 4 bristles. Paratergite bearing 1 seta. Wings 1.56 mm long, CR 0.78, macrotrichia numerous in all cells; second radial cell 4.4 times longer than first (Fig. 2 A). Halter knob yellow. Legs yellow. TR (I) 2.7, TR (II) 3.1, TR (III) 2.4. Seminal capsule single, ovoid, with short neck (Fig. 1 N), 0.120 mm long.

Male unknown.

Material examined. Types not preserved. The single female determined by Kieffer and preserved in SDEI is from Paróe. It is labeled as follows: Paróe, nördl. Paiwan-Distr. (Formosa), H. Sauter VIII.1912, Atrichopogon argus K., Kieffer det.

Discussion. Syntypes from Chip – Chip and Tainan, stored in Budapest, were destroyed in the 1956 fire. The female examined here was collected in Paróe (Kieffer 1916b) and does not belong to the type series. It was determined by Kieffer and agrees well the original description of A. argus (Kieffer 1916a) . Blech & Rohlfien (1987) did not include the species in the catalogue of types preserved in SDEI.

Atrichopogon flaviceps var. mendax , holotype female, Taihoku, Formosa, H. Sauter, 1912, Kieffer det., Typus. SDEI.

Discussion. The description of var. mendax mentions only one female which we treat as the holotype. Atrichopogon flaviceps was described from 6 females. We hereby designate the preserved female as the lectotype. The preserved female types of A. flaviceps and A. mendax represent one species, therefore A. mendax is recognized here as a junior synonym of A. flaviceps .

Material examined. Atrichopogon insularis : Lectotype female, present designation, Taiwan: Formosa, Taihoku, H. Sauter, 1912, 7.XI, Holotypus, Atrichopogon insularis K., Kieffer det. (incomplete, without antennae). Paralectotype female: Hokuto (Form.), H. Sauter XII. 1912, paratypus, Atrichopogon insularis, Kieffer det.

Atrichopogon citrinipes : Lectotype female, present designation: Daitotei (Form.), H. Sauter, V-VI 1914, Atrichopogon citrinipes K., Holotypus, Paralectotype female, Taihoku, Formosa, H. Sauter, 1912, Paratypus, Atrichopogon citrinipes K. Paralectotype male: Taihoku (Form.), H. Sauter, 1912, Paratypus, Atrichopogon citrinipes K.

Discussion. Atrichopogon (Kempia) insularis sensu Tokunaga (1940b, 1962) and Liu et al. (2001) with hairy eyes is another species of the genus, possibly Atrichopogon crispantis Liu, Yan & Liu, 1996 described from China. We propose here to restore Atrichopogon crispantis Liu, Yan & Liu, 1996 from synonymy with A. insularis Kieffer (Liu et al. 2001) .

The paralectotype male of Atrichopogon citrinipes in the original description was mentioned as collected from Daitotei, while the specimen in the SDEI collection originates from Taihoku. We suppose that the original locality was stated erroneously in the publication.

Females with bare eyes and bearing 3–4 setae on paratergite, described by Kieffer as A. citrinipes and A. insularis , actually represent one species. We propose here to treat A. citrinipes as a new junior synonym of A. insularis . According to the original description of A. insularis , the male wing membrane is devoid of macrotrichia. Actually, it has macrotichia, which is rare within the subgenus Atrichopogon s. str. Probably Kieffer overlooked that character in his cursory descriptions of small insects.

Discussion. The type series kept by Museum of Natural History in Budapest was destroyed in 1956. The female determined by Kieffer and described here agrees well with the original description of the species. Atrichopogon (A.) minimus: Tokunaga 1940a: 263 (female, fig. pl. 1 wing; Japan, Taiwan) with bare eyes represents another species.

Sauter X.1912, Atrichopogon ruber . Female: Paróe, nördl. Paiwan-Distr. (Formosa) H. Sauter X.1912, Atrichopogon ruber var. Kieffer det.

Discussion. Types of A. ruber and A. formosanus which had been deposited in the Museum of Natural History in Budapest were destroyed in the 1956 fire. Two males and three females of A. ruber preserved in SDEI, examined here, identified and reported by Kieffer (1921 and 1922) from Taiwan do not belong to the type series. The preserved specimens have reddish bodies, as noted by Kieffer, agree well with the original descriptions of females of A. ruber and therefore provide evidence of A. formosanus being its junior synonym. New synonymy.

Description. Female. Body uniformly yellowish. Eyes pubescent, narrowly fused for distance of 2 ommatidia. Proximal flagellomeres spherical (Fig. 1 M), AR 1.62. Fifth palpal segment conical (Fig. 1 F), mandible with 11 teeth. Wing with 5–20 macrotrichia at apex, length 0.80–0.92 mm, CR 0.67–0.71. Second radial cell 2.3–2.4 times longer than first (Fig. 2 G). Paratergite with 1 seta. Scutellum with 2 large submedian setae and smaller. Sternite VII with single, finger-like caudomedian process. Sternite VIII with 7 strong blunt spines. Sternite IX with small spines (Fig. 3). Seminal capsule single, ovoid, neck very short, 0.070–0,080 mm long (Fig. 1 U).

Male. Similar to female, with usual sexual differences (Remm 1993).

Material examined. Lectotype female, present designation, labeled as follows: Taihoku, Formosa, H. Sauter 1912, paratypus, Atrichopogon myrmedon, Kieffer det.; paralectotype female, labeled as follows: Taihoku, Formosa, H. Sauter 1912, Holotypus, Atrichopogon myrmedon, Kieffer det. Paralectotype female, Taihoku, Formosa, H. Sauter 1912, 7 XI.

Discussion. Kieffer’s original descriptions do not mention the labels „ holotype or „ paralectotype associated with the two preserved specimens, which we treat as syntypes. The better-preserved specimen is designated as the lectotype here. The unique ventral armatures of female genitalia of A. myrmedon (Fig. 3), A. quadrispinosus (Remm, 1993) , and A. pectinicaudalis (Liu et al. 2006) are identical. Consequently, A. quadrispinosus and A. pectinicaudalis are considered new junior synonyms of A. myrmedon . New synonymies.

Key to females of Atrichopogon described from Taiwan

The Atrichopogon fauna of Taiwan, in addition to the species redescribed and interpreted above, includes A. monticolus Tokunaga, 1940 a (p. 271, Taihoku, female), A. kagiensis Tokunaga, 1940 a (p. 270, Taihoku, male) and A. flavidus Kieffer, 1921 . The latter species was briefly described by Kieffer from Philippines (Kieffer 1921) and subsequently recorded from Taihoku by Tokunaga (1940b). Actually it is a doubtful species which has no diagnostic characters and its report from Taiwan is doubtful. Types in SDEI are not preserved (Blech & Rohlfien, 1987). In the key to females presented below are not included: Atrichopogon kagiensis (known from male), A. rufescens Kieffer (nomen dubium) and A. flavidus (doubtful record, type locality - Philippines).
