A72C87E1FFA25F60FF5CCF91A3EF96F2.taxon	discussion	Discussion. Smicronyx bisignatus belongs to the S. remaudierei species group (see discussion on S. remaudierei). WIthin this species group, it can be distinguished from S. remaudierei by the absence of a short line of white scales at the base of the prothorax near the scutellum. It can be distinguished from S. adjamati and S. crassithorax by the presence of a ventral tooth on the femora, which is absent in the latter species. It can be distinguished from S. zambianus by its reddish integument and its elongate elytra of w / l ratio: 0.62 (black integument and w / l ratio: 0.70 in S. zambianus). A72C87E1FFA25F61FF5CC86CA0E090AA.taxon	discussion	Discussion. Smicronyx remaudierei and four closely related species (S. adjamati, S. bisignatus, S. crassithorax and S. zambianus) form a distinct group considered here as the “ S. remaudierei species group ”. This species group can be distinguished from other Smicronyx by their penis bearing erect setae at the apex, sometimes very short but distinct in lateral view. Apart from S. zambianus which is divergent among this group (body integument black, elytra short, w / l ratio: 0.70), all species have the following combination of characters: integument mostly reddish, elytra elongate (w / l ratio equal to or below 0.64). Among the species of the latter group, S. remaudierei can be distinguished from S. bisignatus by the presence of a short line of white scales at the base of the prothorax near the scutellum (absent in S. bisignatus). It can be distinguished from S. adjamati and S. crassithorax by the presence of a ventral tooth on the femora, which is absent in the latter species. The apex of the penis is also a distinctive feature among the species of this species group (Fig. 5 A – E).	en	Haran, Julien (2018): A review of the genus Smicronyx Schoenherr (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Curculioninae) in tropical Africa. A72C87E1FFA35F66FF5CCDD4A1DA926B.taxon	discussion	Discussion. Smicronyx adjamati belongs to the S. remaudierei species group (see discussion on S. remaudierei). Within this species group, it can be distinguished from S. remaudierei and S. bisignatus by the absence of a distinct ventral tooth on the femora, and from S. crassithorax by its narrower prothorax. A72C87E1FFA55F64FF5CCEB4A30392A2.taxon	discussion	Discussion. Smicronyx crassithorax belongs to the S. remaudierei species group (see discussion on S. remaudierei). Within this species group, it can be distinguished from S. remaudierei and S. bisignatus by the absence of a distinct ventral tooth on the femora, and from S. adjamati by its much wider prothorax. It can be distinguished from S. zambianus by its reddish integuments and its elongate elytra of w / l ratio: 0.64 (black integuments and w / l ratio: 0.70 in S. zambianus). The two examined individuals from Tanzania exhibited a distinctly larger overall body size and penis than those from Mali. The number of specimens available for this study was too limited to explore the stability of these characters in this population. Name derivation. Smicronyx crassithorax is named in reference to the particularly large dimensions of its prothorax.	en	Haran, Julien (2018): A review of the genus Smicronyx Schoenherr (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Curculioninae) in tropical Africa. Body integument black; vestiture of elytra consisting of recumbent, slightly overlapping brownish scales, distinctly longer than wide, not concealing integument, and rounded whitish scales usually forming a pale band between humeri and apical third of elytral suture. Head. Rostrum moderately downcurved in lateral view, slightly longer than head capsule + prothorax. Prothorax. quadrate (w / l ratio: 1), sides moderately rounded in basal 2 / 3, constricted in apical 1 / 3, base 1.5 longer than width at apex, with spots of whitish scales near humeri and at base near scutellum. Elytra. Subparallel in basal two-thirds (w / l ratio: 0.69), rounded toward apex in apical third. Legs. Covered with narrow whitish and pale brown scales; femora clavate, armed with distinct ventral tooth, tibiae straight. Genitalia. Penis elongate (w / l ratio: 0.36), sides straight, subparallel, converging near apex, apex rounded; curvature moderate in lateral view, reversed at apex (Fig. 5 G). Females are hardly distinguishable from males based on external morphology (Marshall 1942). Rostrum of females is slightly longer than that of males. Life history. Adults of this species were recorded on bracts and flowers of cotton (Gossypum sp., Malvaceae), however no proof of larva development in this plant was established (Anderson 1962). The recording of this species on Prosopsis (Mimosaceae) is probably accidental. Adults were collected all year round.	en	Haran, Julien (2018): A review of the genus Smicronyx Schoenherr (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Curculioninae) in tropical Africa. A72C87E1FFAA5F69FF5CCA7EA64090AA.taxon	discussion	Discussion. Smicronyx gossypii is close to S. pauperculus and particularly resembles black specimens of the latter species. A specimen from the type series was barcoded (genbank accession number: MH 898571). The closest species of Smicronyx with a barcode available is S. albosquamosus Wollaston (specimen from the Near East, genbank accession number: KU 942331). Both species show a genetic divergence of 14 %. Name derivation. Smicronyx zonatus is named in reference to the contrasting transversal white band on the elytra of this species.	en	Haran, Julien (2018): A review of the genus Smicronyx Schoenherr (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Curculioninae) in tropical Africa. A72C87E1FFAE5F6CFF5CCD31A67994C1.taxon	discussion	Discussion. Smicronyx kenyanus is distinguished from S. namibicus by its narrower prothorax and its less contrasting pattern of scales on the elytra (Fig. 1 J). It can be distinguished from S. gossypii and S. syriacus by its rostrum, which is longer and more downcurved in lateral view (Fig. 4 B) than in the latter two species (Figs. 3 E – F). The penis is also very distinct, expanding regularly from base to apex (Fig. 5 J). Name derivation. A72C87E1FFB05F73FF5CCFB7A71E926A.taxon	discussion	Discussion. Smicronyx guineanus is closest to S. buchnerae (see discussion on that species for diagnostic characters). Smicronyx guineanus is sympatric with Afrosmicronyx umbrinus Hustache and these species are often recorded on the same host plant. Both species have a similar general appearance, but S. guineanus is much smaller (below 3 mm, while A. umbrinus has a size of 3.8 – 4.0 mm) and has unarmed tibiae (A. umbrinus has a distinct ventral tooth on tibiae).
