815B5B39FFEDE438548DFE45FA63FD08.taxon	discussion	Remarks: A Sahelian-Sudan western species, more xerophile than the other African forms of this genus (Basilewsky 1966). The adults have nocturnal activity and can be captured by or near light traps, normally during or just after rain fall. This species was recorded for the first time to Guinea-Bissau by Mandl (1956).	en	Serrano, Artur R. M. 815B5B39FFEDE438548DFC2AFA82F9FD.taxon	discussion	Remarks: A polytipic species with a wide distribution in the northern-central territories of Africa from western (e. g. Senegal, Guinea-Bissau) to eastern countries (e. g. Ethiopia). The ssp. cursor seems restricted to the Guinea-Senegal region (Werner 1993, 2000 a; Cassola 1998). In Guinea-Bissau the adults appear during the rainy season and can be found until the beginning of the dry season. During the rainy season, the adults when disturbed are easily observed running quickly to the edges of the footways across the forests, or even across the savannah. This fact corroborate the comments of Guérin-Méneville (1849) about the behaviour of these beetles: “ Ces Cicindèles, qui ne volent pas, courent entre les herbes et cherchent à se cacher sous les touffes quand ou les poursuit ”. Sometimes they are also attracted to light traps (Serrano 1995), and in the forest habitats they may be syntopic with Euryarthron festivum (Dejean) and Ropaloteres cinctus (Olivier).	en	Serrano, Artur R. 815B5B39FFEDE438548DF995FE2CF826.taxon	discussion	Remarks: A species recorded for several countries of Africa throughout the northern, central and eastern regions. Apparently, and in accordance with Guérin-Méneville (1849), the adults of this species have the same behaviour of P. concinna cursor. However, we never found P. leprieuri during the day, it was always sampled at light (“ BL ” and “ WL ”).	en	Serrano, Artur R. M. 815B5B39FFECE439548DFA3AFDEFF815.taxon	discussion	Remarks: A big and polymorphic species with a wide distribution throughout western and central regions of Africa. The adults, in Guinea-Bissau, are found mainly at the shaded paths and footways of the forests, sometimes together with E. festivum and R. cinctus. Unlike the anterior Mission, in which several specimens of this species (Serrano 1997) were sampled, during this one only the two sampled specimens were found. Apparently this seems an indication that populations of E. lugubris are probably being affected by the amelioration of their forested habitats.	en	Serrano, Artur R. M. 815B5B39FFECE439548DFF0AFDFAFD06.taxon	discussion	Remarks: A western and central African species, recorded also for Sudan (Werner 2000 a). Adults of E. festivum occur along the shaded paths and footways of open forests, flying or running into the forest when disturbed. They are syntopic with P. concinna cursor at some localities and with R. cinctus almost in all monitored localities at Guinea-Bissau.	en	Serrano, Artur R. M. 815B5B39FFECE439548DFC85FB75FAE8.taxon	discussion	Remarks: A nice and small species with a disjoint distribution, known only for one locality in Guinea- Bissau. It was recorded for the first time to this country by Serrano (1997), occurring in a small savannah near the “ tabanca ” (= native village) of Alage Cabiro. In the fortnight of July of 1995 the adults were abundant in this habitat, but in the same period of 2006 only three adults were monitored in the same habitat. However, by the presence of hundreds of first instar larvae in the soil, we presume that the adults appeared sooner in 2006, probably at the end of May. P. vuilletorum, as was pointed out by Serrano (1997), was recorded erroneously for Senegal and Niger. Its presence in People`s Republic of Congo needs confirmation.	en	Serrano, Artur R. M. 815B5B39FFEFE43A548DFB7DFCCDF8F8.taxon	discussion	Remarks: A very widespread species throughout western and central Africa, extending to Uganda and Ethiopia. The adults present some variation in colour, with reddish, blackish or green individuals. This is one of the most common species in Guinea-Bissau, occurring near the sea at Casuarina sp. tree stands (e. g. Varela) and inland at shaded clearances, paths, footways of savannahs and forests. The adults are syntopic in many localities with P. concinna cursor and E. festivum.	en	Serrano, Artur R. M. 815B5B39FFEFE43A548DFF0AFB3DFD8E.taxon	discussion	Remarks: A species described from the old “ Guinea portugaise ” (Guérin-Méneville 1849), but recorded later to several countries of Africa. Like M. Bocandé (in Guérin-Méneville 1849) we found this species only once near the edges of an inland moor (Serrano 1995). Werner (2000 b) claims that it is a forest species and he captured the adults through light trapping in Ethiopia, as happened with us in Guinea-Bissau.	en	Serrano, Artur R. M. 815B5B39FFEFE43A548DFD52FD12FBE5.taxon	discussion	Remarks: Such as the precedent species, R. nysa was described from the old “ Guinea portugaise ” (Guérin-Méneville 1849). It was recorded later to several countries of Africa (Werner & Schüle 2006). One adult was collected at light (Serrano 1995) in Guinea-Bissau. VII. 2006, 1 Ψ, “ DO ”, (AS). Remarks: A big and beautiful species with variable yellow-orange markings in the elytra. It has a scattered distribution throughout the western and central regions of Africa. This species is not common in Guinea- Bissau, the adults occurring only in the shaded and moist paths and footways of the forests. The accelerated destruction of forests in Guinea-Bissau during the last decade for large scale cultivation of cashew tree stands has contributed to the decline, or even extinction, of local populations of R. flavosignatus in places where it has been previously found (e. g. Mampatá-Guilege, Mampatá-Cumbijã, Coli).	en	Serrano, Artur R. M. 815B5B39FFE1E430548DFAB2FEEEFA58.taxon	discussion	Remarks. The new species clearly differs from C. octoguttata, its closest species, by the general color and the sculpture of head, pronotum and elytra. Differences can be better appreciated in the structure of the labrum and the coloration of the mandibles. The lateral labral teeth are more protruding in C. gulbenkiana n. sp. than in C. octoguttata. The extension of the dark area of the mandibular teeth is very reduced in the former species, and extensively more darkened and metallic in the later. The pronotum is slightly differently shaped also, rounded at sides in C. octoguttata and sub-parallel in C. gulbenkiana n. sp.. The two elytral anterior discal dots found in C. octoguttata are reduced to a dot near the suture in the new species; the apical lunule is also reduced, not reaching the suture in the new species. The inner angle of the connection of the sub-apical roundish spot with the apical lunule is acute in C. octoguttata, while in the new species it is clearly right. The sculpture of head and pronotum, as well as the characters of the labrum, pronotum and aedeagus clearly separates C. gulbenkiana n. sp. from the other West- African Ifasina such as C. lutaria, C. genofiae Rivalier and C. decellei. Collecting observations. The adults of this species were captured at the shaded paths of a forest fragment (Fig. 5) by direct observation. Their activity seems to be restricted to the rainy season. Some individuals of Cratohaerea bruneti (Gory) were sampled on termite nests close to the paths where C. gulbenkiana n. sp. was observed.	en	Serrano, Artur R. M. 815B5B39FFE4E431548DFA1EFBF8F839.taxon	discussion	Remarks: Another species that was described originally from Guinea-Bissau (Guérin-Méneville 1849). Known mainly from the western and central territories of Africa, but reaching some north-eastern countries. The adults in Guinea-Bissau are active during the rainy season at mud flats and damp edges of bogs. It is usual to observe M. flavidens with C. lutaria, C. octoguttata, and M. melancholica.	en	Serrano, Artur R. M. 815B5B39FFE7E432548DFAFDFAE1F888.taxon	discussion	Remarks: A very common species, widely distributed throughout Africa, southern Europe, Middle East and Asia. Adults are active almost all over the year (dry and rainy seasons) in Guinea-Bissau, occurring at the edges of bogs, ponds, swamps, moors, rice fields, lakes and rivers. It can be attracted to light trapping and in some habitats (e. g. edges of bogs) is syntopic with M. flavidens, C. lutaria and / or C. octoguttata.	en	Serrano, Artur R. M. 815B5B39FFE7E432548DFCD2FC78FB65.taxon	discussion	Remarks: A species with a scattered distribution throughout the western territories of Africa. In Guinea- Bissau adults are active during the rainy season, occurring in the shaded moist places of paths at the edges of puddles. The species seems in regression, as happens with other tiger beetles of forested areas, as a consequence of the disappearance or degradation of the primary forests.	en	Serrano, Artur R. M.
