The specimens collected were in gamma stage, the biggest with 85.76 cm 2. One specimen was degraded. The spicules had some distinct aspects when compared to descriptions in the literature: tylostyles’ heads were slightly larger than the usual; few tylostyles with heads slightly trilobed, with a small swelling; some tylostyles have an incipient second tyle below the head, resembling polytylotes; and in all spicules, an axial canal is visible.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/7C394D6EE752FF8AC1F9EBCB3C83F875	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. In the Mediterranean this species grows more or less like a ramified small tree, while in the Atlantic as encrusting forms (Carballo 1994), as shown by the specimens collected in this survey. The spicules are composed by straight and thin subtylostyles (157.5‒325.4‒409.5 x 5.3‒5.3‒5.3 µm). Principal styles curved, and slightly constricted in one extremity (252.0‒425.1‒598.5 x 6.6‒7.9‒9.2 µm). Accessory styles, like principal styles, but smaller (152.2‒173.6‒241.5 x 5.3‒6.7‒7.9 µm). Toxas smooth with both extremities slightly curved (26.3‒93.9‒170.9 x 1.3‒1.7‒2.6 µm). The palmate isochelae (15.8‒16.4‒18.4 x 3.9‒5.1‒6.57 µm) found in the specimens were few. We don’t refuse the hypothesis that palmate isochelae could be cleistochelae, because no SEM was available. Occasionally, microscleres include palmate isochelae and modified forms, and toxas with smooth or spined points (Hooper 1996), yet those characters were not found in the collected specimens.

MMF 35073 was compared with the literature (Van Soest et al. 2013), focusing on some specimens, and mainly those caught by Boury-Esnault and Lopes (1985) at Stations: Aç 79-16; Aç 79-17. We can hesitatingly conclude that MMF 35073 is like Clathria (Clathria) coralloides sensu Boury-Esnault and Lopes (1985) by the type and micrometries of spicules, and its encrusting habit. Possibly, in the future this specie can be assigned has C. (C.) arcifera com. nov. (Van Soest 2013).

This species is distributed in Azores and Mediterranean, being this study the first record from the Central East Atlantic until Cape Verde (not included).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/7C394D6EE751FF89C1F9EF123A5BFAFF	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. MMF 3507 has straight and very spiny acanthostyles with irregular bases (78.9‒118.0‒181.5 x 6.6‒8.2‒10.5 µm) and all have a head, occasionally only slightly evident. Subtylostyles (1542.0‒1781.2‒1946.0 x 11.8‒13.8‒15.8 µm) and tornote (343‒343‒343 x 1.7‒1.7‒1.7 µm) are rare. The specimen collected had accumulation of detritus over the body, and some subtylostyles showed specks in their heads, which we were unsure whether they were spines or detritus.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/7C394D6EE751FF89C1F9EDB23944FE1C	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Although three types of anisochelae and two types of sigmas were described in the type specimen, only large anisochelae (31.6‒34‒39.5 x 2‒2 ‒2 µm) and large sigmas (81.5‒81.8‒81.8 x 3.4‒3.4‒3.4 µm) were found in our specimen. Tylostyles’ heads are slightly swollen. Despite the Mycalidae often includes several types of spicules, the extremely encrusting shape of the small specimen collected (1 mm thick) conditioned the procedure for OM slides. We also recognize that some spicules should be observed by SME, but that was not possible at the time of preparation and identification.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/7C394D6EE751FF89C1F9E817393CF95F	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
