Description. Total length: 5.5–12.4 mm. Width across humeral calli: 0.7–1.9 mm. Body red-brown. Habitus of types: Figs 1–3.

Head broader than long, shiny, smooth. Eyes large. Metarostrum and mesorostrum of male slightly grooved longitudinally (Fig. 20). Prorostrum smooth, flattened, 0.32–0.39 as long as head + metarostrum + mesorostrum together. Antennomere 3 as long as broad, conical; following ones broader than long, subcylindrical with a more or less circular row of thin setae; antennomeres 9–10 globose, weakly lengthened, 11th 1.6–1.9 longer than 10th.

Pronotum smooth, shiny. Prosternellum not distinct. Metasternum smooth, slightly depressed in male. Base of elytra almost straight, interstriae 3, 4 and 5–7 forming small raised tubercles at base; interstria 3 large and raised, mostly at apex; interstria 4 larger than 3 in the fore part; interstria 8 beginning before or after the first half of elytra, never reaching the base; interstria 9 projecting rearward and forming the external apical border of elytra. First segment of metatarsi slightly shorter than the two following ones together (Fig. 25).

Sternites III–IV of abdomen slightly laterally carinate, weakly grooved and not depressed in female, the depression deeper in male. Basal notches of sternites V–VI sometimes hardly distinct. Apex of epipleurites VIII: Fig. 29. Spermatheca: Fig. 30.

Remarks. Comparison of type specimens of H. celebensis (Fig. 3) with the type of H. javanus (Fig. 2) and numerous representatives of H. trichemerus (holotype: Fig. 1) shows these three taxa conspecific. Characters used by Kolbe (1892) to discriminate H. celebensis from H. javanus (length of antennomeres) are not consistant when numerous specimens are examined. So I conclude that Hoplopisthius celebensis Kolbe, 1892 = H. trichemerus Senna, 1892 , n. syn. , H. javanus having already been placed in synonym with H. trichemerus by Senna (1893b).

This species is also cited from China and Taiwan (Damoiseau, 1987; Sforzi & Bartolozzi, 2004). Distribution map: Fig. 98.

Description. Total length: 6.2–10.3 mm. Width across humeral cali: 0.9–1.5 mm. Body red-brown with a darker discal area on elytra. Habitus of types: Figs 4–7.

Head broader than long, smooth or finely punctate. Metarostrum of male with a weak and hardly distinct fovea. Prorostrum 0.29–0.37 as long as head + metarostrum + mesorostrum. Antennomere 3 slightly conical, almost as long as broad; following ones cylindrical as long as or slightly longer than broad; antennomere 9–10 as long as broad, 11th 1.6–1.9 as long as 10th. Venter of head and metarostrum convex; mesorostrum slightly depressed.

Pronotum slightly shiny, finely and sparsely punctate. Prosternellum more or less distinct. Brush of thick short hair under femora (Fig 50) more distinct in males. Metasternum convex, longitudinally grooved. Base of elytra almost straight, interstriae 1, 4 and 5 protruding forward and slightly raised at base. Interstriae 2 and 4 less raised than interstriae 1, 3 and 5. In females, interstria 7 abruptly interrupted at the apex, forming a tooth (Fig. 48); in males, it extends behind on the external border of apical "forceps", not forming a tooth (Fig. 49); interstria 8 beginning just before the first half of elytra and vanishing on apical declivity; interstriae 5, 6 and 7 connected forward to form a common humeral interstria, 6th interstria often weakly marked forward. Both sexes without median tooth on inner border of apical "forceps" (Figs 48–49). First metatarsal segment as long as or longer than the two following together (Fig. 51).

Sternites III–IV of abdomen convex, longitudinal groove deeper and wider in male (Fig. 53); no lateral carinae; few coarse punctures on sides and on posterior margin of sternite IV. Sternites V–VI with three small basal notches and few coarse punctures. Tergite VII of females not notched at apex (Fig. 52). Epipleurites VIII: Fig. 55. Spermatheca: Fig. 54.

Remarks. H. oberthueri has precedence over C. felschei as reprints of original work of Senna were found in MZUF with the date of September 1892, just as Kolbe's work (Luca Bartolozzi, pers. comm.), but complete volume of Bollettino della Società entomologica italiana was published only on January 28th 1893. As it is impossible to know whether Kolbe or Senna's work has priority because the difference is only about few days, as Senna (1894) says his work was published before Kolbe's, and in order of not changing nomenclature, precedence is given to H. oberthueri .

Sforzi & Bartolozzi (2004) were not able to locate the lectotype of H. oberthueri (designated by Damoiseau, 1987) in the collection of the MNHN. After careful examination of all the specimens in the collection, I finally found it (Fig. 5) with two paralectotypes. Damoiseau (1987) says lectotype is a male but it is a female.

This species is also cited from Philippines (Sforzi & Bartolozzi, 2004). Distribution map: Fig. 99.

Remarks. Comparison and dissection of the type specimens of C. forcipitiger (Fig. 10) and C. lamingtoni (Fig. 11), and examination of numerous specimens, showed that many individuals are intermediate between these two forms, and there is no correlation with geographic distribution. So I conclude that Carcinopisthius lamingtoni Damoiseau, 1987 = C. forcipitiger Damoiseau, 1987 , n. syn. Distribution map: Fig. 99.

Antennomere 3 conical, weakly lengthened; 4–8 almost cylindrical, broader than long; 11th 1.50–1.90 longer than 10th. Venter of head very weakly grooved.

Pronotum shiny, smooth. Prosternellum hardly distinct. Underside of first protarsal segment denticulate (Fig. 76). Metasternum convex, smooth. Base of elytra straight, interstria 1, 3, 4 and 5 slightly protruding forward. Interstria 3 abruptly stopped before apical declivity but not forming a sharp tooth (Fig. 73); interstria 5, 6 and 7 connected forward to form a common humeral interstria. External border of apical "forceps" with a small tooth at base (Fig. 73, arrow). Inner side with a long median tooth in the female (Fig. 73), and without median tooth in male (Fig. 74).

Sternites III–IV of abdomen (Fig. 75) not or very weakly depressed, with a very light median groove, laterally carinate. Tergite VII of female with long hair (as on Fig. 88). Gonopods IX: Fig. 77. Spermatheca: Fig. 78.

Remarks. Westward, this species reaches the Moluccas (Sforzi & Bartolozzi, 2004) but I could not examine specimens from these islands. One specimen in BMNH is labelled "Perak, Doherty" (Malaysia), but this is very probably an erroneous datum. It is not listed in the "Material examined". Distribution map: Fig. 98.
