Physopelta apicalis Walker, 1873, here designated.

Description. The genus is characterised by a remarkable sexual dimorphism (see Figs 1, 3): males (18.6–19.3 mm) are larger and more robust than females (15.8–16.5 mm), having the pronotum longer and more gibbose (especially the callar lobe), longer antennae (especially antennomeres 1–3 are prolonged; see Measurements and Figs 1–2) and longer legs. In females the pronotum is shorter and weakly gibbose, antennomeres 1–3 and legs are distinctly shorter (Fig. 5).

Lateral margins of pronotum forming a sharply explanate lamina (see Figs 1–2). Disc of scutellum basally depressed, its posterior portion elevated. Procoxae bearing a lateral process with bifurcate apex (Figs 3–4, 6–7) in both sexes, larger in males than in females (in one female the apex is simply pointed rather than bifurcate). Profemora of male incrassate, provided with two rows of setiferous to spiniferous denticles intermixed with a few (2–4) larger teeth, the largest tooth being situated near to apex (Figs 8–9); the rows of denticles are separated by a smooth and only slightly depressed longitudinal furrow; profemora of female slender, not incrassate, but otherwise similar to that of male (cf. Figs 1 and 5). Protibiae of male ventrally with two longitudinal rows of small denticles, apically thickened with a single larger tooth anteapically; females with less developed denticles and anteapical tooth. Mesofemora of males with two longitudinal rows of small setiferous or spiniferous denticles in apical two thirds and a shallow longitudinal furrow in apical third (Figs 10–11); mesofemora of female, as well as metafemora, meso- and metatibiae of both sexes without denticles and longitudinal furrows. Peritreme of the metathoracic scent gland short, oval, directed posterolaterad (see Figs 12–14). For description and illustrations of pygophore and paramere see Zamal & Chopra (1990: Figs 8–9, 11).

Differential diagnosis. Riegeriana gen. nov. is most similar (especially in size of the explanate lateral margins of pronotum) to the Oriental-Australian genus Iphita . However, species of Iphita differ in the absence of sexual dimorphism (cf. Figs 20 and 22, 25 and 27) and procoxae lacking prominent tubercles (Figs 28–31). In addition, some other Iphita species (e.g., I. coimbatorensis, I. lata sp. nov., I. limbata) also differ in the kidney-shaped peritreme (see Figs 15–17) and all the femora of both sexes being ventrally provided with a longitudinal furrow distinct for most of its length (see Figs 32–34). However, I. dubia lacks the longitudinal furrows on meso- and metafemora (observed in female) and its peritreme is more similar in shape to that of R. apicalis (Fig. 19). Riegeriana apicalis further differs from all the described species of Iphita in the bicolorous corium with black transverse stripe on red background (see also Stehlík & Jindra 2008).

Note. Similar prolonged antennae in males are known in the Afrotropical genus Kmentia Stehlík, 2013 ( Largidae: Physopeltinae: Kmentiini) (Stehlík 2013) which, however, differs markedly in the structure of male genitalia.

Etymology. We dedicate the new genus to our dear colleague Christian Rieger, eminent German heteropterist and co-editor of the ‘Catalogue of the Heteroptera of the Palaearctic Region’, on the occasion of his 70th birthday. Gender is feminine.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/3C54878DFFB2D556D0AA2E218D07FF03	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. See Agosti, D., Egloff, W., 2009. Walker (1873) described Physopelta apicalis based on four syntypes, and the type locality was given as ‘Hindostan’. In the collection of BMNH we found four specimens of P. apicalis, neither of them being labeled as from Hindostan. However, based on the labels and acquisition numbers it was possible to identify one male and two females as Walker’s syntypes, while the fourth male originates from Distant’s collection and does not belong to the type series (see Distant 1903). The whereabout of the fourth syntype is unknown. To avoid any later confusion concerning the identity of the species, the male syntype is designated here as the lectotype.

Stehlík & Jindra (2008) described Iphita fasciata based on combination of characters unique within the genus Iphita, not expecting that such a distinctive species had already been described in a different genus. However, during the present revision of Physopelta, Stehlík (2013) discovered that Physopelta apicalis is not congeneric with the rest of Physopelta species. Here we can further confirm that Riegeriana apicalis (Walker, 1873) is a senior synonym of I. fasciata Stehlík & Jindra, 2008, syn. nov.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/3C54878DFFB1D551D0AA29DE8F7BFD39	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Distant (1919) described Dindymellus coimbatorensis without mentioning number or sex of specimens on which the description was based, giving only the type locality and collector: ‘South India; Coimbatore (T. However, Ahmad & Abbas (1992), examining a single ‘type’ of D. coimbatorensis, considered it a holotype and listed the attached label to allow identification of the specimen, which action represents a ‘fixation of lectotype by inference of holotype before 2000’ according to ICZN (1999: Article 74.6).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/3C54878DFFB6D552D0AA291D8DB4FE5E	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Antennae (except basal third of antennomere 4), femora, tibiae, and membrane black. Lateral margins of pronotum, costal margin of hemelytra, hypocostal lamina, pronotal epipleuron, coxae, and trochanters reddish. Basal third of antennomere 4 whitish.

Structure. Labium reaching between metacoxae. Callar lobe wide, especially in female (pronotum nearly quadrate), and flat. Anterior pronotal margin concave, its anterolateral angles produced towards eye. Ventral surface of profemora apically with 3–5 teeth (1–3 in dorsal row, 0–2 in ventral row, often asymmetrically in one specimen). Protibiae and mesofemora ventrally with small denticles in both sexes.

Vestiture. Body bare, mesotibiae both dorsally and ventrally with black, semi-erect spines, metatibiae only ventrally with black, semi-erect spines. Punctures on pronotum fine, less apparent; clavus and corium with distinct black punctures.

Measurements (in mm). Holotype (male) / paratype (female). Body length 17.60 / 18.85; head: width (including eyes) 2.48 / 2.70, interocular width 1.51 / 1.62; lengths of antennomeres: 1–3.19 / 3.35, 2–3.35 / 3.84, 3–2.16 / 2.27, 4–2.81 / 2.97; pronotum: length 3.67 / 3.83, width 5.45 / 5.56; scutellum: length 2.16 / 2.54, width 2.81 / 2.94; corium: 8.80 / 9.50, width 2.29 / 3.51.

Differential diagnosis. Iphita lata sp. nov. is most similar to I. coimbatorensis, but the latter is generally larger (although the measurements of both species partly overlap; see below). Ahmad & Abbas (1992) indicated that the holotype is a male, but since only female genitalia were described and figured in the original description, this is obviously an error.

Ahmad & Abbas (1992) did not indicate the etymology of their new species, however, they emphasized black colouration of the body of this species as a key character distinguishing it from its congeners within the Indian fauna, thus leaving no doubt about the intended meaning of the specific epithet. Unfortunately, the species epithet nigris is neither the nominative of the appropriate Latin adjective niger, - ra, - rum (= black) nor any existing Latin noun related to the black colour. However, as the wording of the Code does not allow emendations to such grammatical mistakes (see ICZN 1999: Article 32.5.1) it must remain as ‘correct original spelling’. As such the name nigris should be treated as arbitrary combination of letters and noun in apposition.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/3C54878DFFBED55AD0AA2B608801FEB3	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
