3B4417408E2CFF9AFF2DFAD6E7D7F9D9.taxon	discussion	Remarks — The single female from Sardinia, used in this study for molecular analysis, morphologically matches the description of Panisus torrenticolus. The latter species is diagnosed by a characteristic porosity of the muscle attachment sclerites, having a centre of fine pores surrounded by a circle of large pores and an outer area of finer pores (Fig. 5 A, B). Further features include the frontal shield as long as wide, or longer than wide, and dorsolateral plates without or with only slightly projecting lateral extensions (Fig. 5 A) (Di Sabatino et al. 2010). The sequenced specimen from Sardinia forms a unique BIN (BOLD: AFC 5560) with the nearest neighbouring BIN BOLD: AET 0970, which includes a specimen of P. chicamoi Valdecasas, García- Jiménez & Fernández- Campoamor, 2021 (GBMNF 37305 - 22) from Spain, a species recently described by Valdecasas et al. (2021) from Murcia, Spain. In our COI tree, the specimen from Sardinia appeared as sister clade of the latter species from Spain. The p - distance between these two BINs was estimated at 15.54 % indicating a long independent history of these two clades. In order to finally define the taxonomic status of the new lineage from Sardinia, the taxonomic situation of two other Western Mediterranean species needs to be clarified first: Panisus clypeolatus Maglio, 1909, originally described from Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy (Maglio 1909) and later on reported from the Western Mediterranean (e. g., Algeria: K. Viets 1951, Bader 1989; France: Motas 1928 a, b, Lundblad 1956; Italy: Cicolani & Di Sabatino 1985). It was synonymized with P. torrenticolus by Di Sabatino et al. (2009). The type material of P. clypeolatus is lost and the original description does not include original details that allow a definition of this taxon (see Di Sabatino et al. 2009 for discussion). Panisus lundbladi Bader, 1981, a species originally described from Spain based on a specimen collected by Lundblad in an aqueduct in Girona, Catalonia (Bader 1981). Morphologically, the latter species is somehow intermediate between P. michaeli Koenike, 1896 and P. torrenticolus, resembling the latter species in the presence of a ring of larger pores on most muscle attachment sclerites, and to P. michaeli in the presence of an enlarged frontal shield and the extensive lateral ramifications of the dorsolateralia. For now, it seems most appropriate to leave the clade from Sardinia as “ Panisus torrenticolus – group ” until more specimens from Western Mediterranean, including specimens from the loci typici of the two above mentioned species with uncertain taxonomic status become available.	en	Pešić, Vladimir, Goldschmidt, Tom (2023): New DNA-assisted records of water mites from Sardinia, with the description of a new species (Acari, Hydrachnidia). 3B4417408E2DFF99FF2DF8E3E6FDFE82.taxon	discussion	Remarks — The specimens from Sardinia, used in this study for molecular analysis, morphologically match the description of Sperchon meridianus. This species was originally described by Angelier (1954) from Corsica, but later on synonymized by Gerecke (1991) with S. setiger Thor, 1898. Recently, Pešić & Smit (2022 c) barcoded S. setiger - like specimens from Corsica and resurrected S. meridianus as a valid species distinct from S. setiger. The specimens from Sardinia molecularly analysed in this study fall in BIN (BOLD: AEO 2778) which also includes specimens of S. meridianus from Corsica (see Pešić & Smit 2022 c). 3B4417408E2EFF98FF2DFA1EE4A9FEC5.taxon	discussion	Remarks — The specimens from Sardinia used in this study for molecular analysis match the description of Torrenticola laskai, a species described from Corsica (Di Sabatino et al. 2009). Recently the status of that species has been questioned by Pešić & Smit (2022 c). They barcoded specimens of T. laskai from Corsica, and showed the presence of two highly supported clades (TL-Gp 1 and TL-Gp 2 sensu Pešić & Smit 2022 c) with a COI divergence estimated at 11.04 ± 1.46 % K 2 P (Pešić & Smit 2022 c). In our study, we obtained two BINs among the T. laskai specimens from Sardinia. One sequenced female from Riu Ollastu falls into BIN cluster (BOLD: AEO 1170), which in addition to the specimen used in this study for molecular analysis, includes two specimens from Corsica assigned to the T. laskai - Gp 2 clade. According to Pešić & Smit (2022 c) in regard to the similarity in size and shape of the ejaculatory complex, the T. laskai - Gp 2 clade corresponds with the nominal species. Furthermore, two specimens from the same sampling site form a unique BIN (BOLD: AET 4248) with the p - distance to BOLD: AEO 1170 estimated at 3.2 %.	en	Pešić, Vladimir, Goldschmidt, Tom (2023): New DNA-assisted records of water mites from Sardinia, with the description of a new species (Acari, Hydrachnidia). 3B4417408E28FF9CFF2DFC07E66AF81B.taxon	etymology	Etymology — The new species is named after our colleague Antonio Di Sabatino (L'Aquila, Italy) in recognition of his enthusiasm and work on water mites of Italy. Species delimitation using DNA-barcodes — The final alignment for species delimitation using COI sequence data comprised 678 nucleotide positions (nps) of the 63 specimens of the Atractides nodipalpis species group with A. acutirostris (Koenike, 1908) (HYDIR 025 - 23) of the subgenus Tympanomegapus Thor, 1923 from Turkey and Mixobates processifer (Thor, 1905) from Norway used as outgroups (Fig. 8). The sequences of specimens from Sardinia form a highly supported clade which is placed (albeit with a low support) as a sister species of A. robustus from Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The COI sequences form a unique cluster (BOLD: AFC 4126), with the nearest neighbouring BIN being BOLD: ADZ 9348 which includes 54 specimens from Germany, Montenegro, Romania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Austria, Italy, Albania and Greece assigned to A. robustus. The genetic distance (11.22 % p - distance) between these two clades indicates a long independent history of these species.	en	Pešić, Vladimir, Goldschmidt, Tom (2023): New DNA-assisted records of water mites from Sardinia, with the description of a new species (Acari, Hydrachnidia). 3B4417408E28FF9CFF2DFC07E66AF81B.taxon	discussion	Discussion — The new species from Sardinia morphologically resembles Atractides robustus (Sokolow, 1940), originally described as a subspecies of A. nodipalpis. From the latter species, A. robustus can be separated with certainty only in males (IV-L- 4 / 5 with pointed lateral sheets covering the articulation of the next segments, P- 4 sword seta proximal to proximo-ventral seta; Gerecke 2003). Atractides robustus was originally described by Sokolow (1940) from the affluents of Kuban River in the Caucasus. Recently the taxonomic status of A. robustus was questioned by Pešić et al. (2023 c) who showed the presence of at least two lineages within A. robustus. The first lineage encompasses three BINs (BOLD: AEI 1810, BOLD: AEK 3669, BOLD: AED 3548) of specimens from Eastern Turkey and Northern Iran, which probably belong to the same species as indicated by the results of the ASAP delineation procedure (Fig. 8). Considering the proximity of the locality from which these BINs originate and the locus typicus of A. robustus, it seems appropriate to assume that this lineage is conspecific with the latter species. The second lineage, on the other hand, includes populations from Central Europe and the Balkans which fall within BIN cluster BOLD: ADZ 9348. As emphasized by Pešić et al. (2023 c), the latter populations from Central Europe and the Balkans might represent a new sister species but the final decision needs to be postponed until material of A. robustus from its locus typicus in the Caucasus is available. The new species from Sardinia differs in both sexes from Atractides robustus in the acetabula being comparatively smaller, roundish and arranged in a curve (vs. larger, subtriangular in shape and showing a triangular arrangement in the latter species). Furthermore, in males of A. robustus, both anterior and posterior margins of the genital field are strongly indented, anteriorly with a small projection in the centre of the indentation and Ac- 3 rather long and with the anterior margin approaching the posterior margin of Ac- 1 (see Figs. 6 B and - F for comparison). Remarks — The previous records of A. robustus from Sardinia (Gerecke 2014 b) likely should be assigned to the new species.	en	Pešić, Vladimir, Goldschmidt, Tom (2023): New DNA-assisted records of water mites from Sardinia, with the description of a new species (Acari, Hydrachnidia).
