In Joannou & Krüger’s (2009) revision of Bombycopsis C. Felder & R. Felder, 1874, B. (Bufoidia) pallida Joannou & Krüger, 2009, a sympatric new species allied to B. nigrovittata, was described based mainly on phenotypic differences despite noting the latter was very variable in colouration. Prozorov et al. (2023) found barcodes of both phenotypes to be almost identical (maximum PWD of 0.3%) and yet they maintained that “stable morphological differences” were not supported by the genetics in spite of the aforementioned variability of B. nigrovittata and the identical genitalia. Numerous specimens in ANHRT of B. nigrovittata (including insects with the pallida phenotype) from throughout its range (South Africa, Tanzania and Zambia) were recently barcoded and it is apparent that B. pallida is merely a pale form of B. nigrovittata and the former is synonymised with the latter, thus: Bombycopsis (Bufoidia) nigrovittata Aurivillius, 1927 = B. (Bufoidia) pallida Joannou & Krüger, 2009 syn. n. (junior subjective synonymy).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/2B1887953E50FFDDDCD2FF1FE849FCF6	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. See Agosti, D., Egloff, W., 2009. With its uniform fawn-coloured wings, Eutricha giustii sp. n. is a highly distinctive moth that cannot be readily confused with any other species in this or any other allied genera and it is a great surprise that such an insect had evaded discovery until now. All other members of the Pachypasa Walker, 1855 group revised by Zolotuhin & Gurkovich (2009) display well-defined fasciae upon darker ground-colours (ranging from brown through to slate-grey) on the forewings. The male genital configuration of the sympatric E. fulvida (Fig. 91) differs markedly, expressed by the considerably broader tegumen, shorter membranous-setose socii, and markedly larger bilobate valves where the dorsal lobe has an additional triangular medioventral process; the ventral valval lobe has a much larger, semi-circular subbasal protrusion followed by a short, finely dentate ventromedial prominence continued in a gradually tapered, apically pointed distal section. Moreover, the base of the vinculum is markedly wider, the dorsal plate of saccus has sinuous margins and the cubile is noticeably longer with narrower, more heavily sclerotized caudolateral and much wider, sharply dentate, apically pointed caudal projections. Additionally, the phallus has a much longer and more pointed dilation of the coecum penis and a markedly longer and stouter carinal process.

Description. Forewing length: holotype male: 21 mm; paratype males: 20–22 mm.

Male. Upperside. Ground colour of head, thorax, forewing and abdomen fawn; hindwing pale fawn. Antenna bipectinate, brown. Veins densely packed with golden scales giving definition against ground colour. Forewing elongate, rounded at apex, outer margin very gently arcuate; paler distally. Costa and fringe bronze. Anal margin with a patch of dark brown scales medially. Postmedial fascia brown, narrow, indistinct, running broadly parallel to outer margin. Hindwing rounded, fringe bronze. Ground colour darker basally and towards tornus. Underside. Ground colour as on upperside but head and legs with a ferruginous tint. Forewing darker and more ferruginous in costal half, paler distally. Postmedial fascia absent, but indicated by boundary of pale distal area. Hindwing with dark ferruginous scaling basally and along costal margin. Abdomen. Eighth segment unmodified, sternite very short, somewhat trapezoidal, anterior margin with shallow medial depression, posterior margin straight; tergite elongate quadrangular with straight anterior and lateral margins and evenly convex posterior margin.

Male genitalia. Uncus heavily-reduced; socius strongly reduced, represented by short, rounded, membranous, sparsely setose bulge situated near dorsal base of valve; tegumen shorter than width of valve base, with very narrow lateral plates. Valve heavily sclerotized, broad at base, very short (as long as phallus), bilobate; dorsal lobe with concave costal and straight ventral margin, subapically gently curved, apically rounded; ventral lobe with straight dorsal margin and slightly concave ventral margin following a broadly dilated, evenly rounded subbasal section; apex pointed. Juxta heavily sclerotized, semi-circular, tightly fused with phallus. Vinculum strongly modified, dorsal plate inverted-triangular with slightly concave lateral margins; ventral plate (cubile) consisting of medially deeply split, posteriorly gradually dilated elongate plates with bifurcate distal end possessing a moderately sclerotized, subapically curved apically pointed lateral projection and a shorter, heavily sclerotized, posteriorly gradually tapered, apically truncate caudal projection. Phallus strongly sclerotized, coecum penis rounded triangular, carina well-developed, robust thorn-shaped. Vesica membranous, as wide as the distal end of the phallus and almost as long as phallus, without cornuti, abruptly constricted at base of rather thin vesica ejaculatorius.

Female unknown.

DNA divergences. The new species has been assigned the BIN BOLD:AFG3313. Intraspecific PWD was 0.0% (n=2) and diverged from E. fulvida by 4.5–4.6% (n=3) and the MSR E. morosa by 4.3% (n=1).

Derivatio nominis. The new species is dedicated with great pleasure to Alessandro Giusti, Senior Curator of Lepidoptera, NHMUK, who by facilitating access to the Lasiocampidae under his care, has ensured the completeness of this paper. A noun in the genitive case.

Distribution. The new species is known only from its type locality and is almost certainly endemic to the MPA hotspot.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/2B1887953E50FFDCDCD2F9F7EABEF8C6	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Lebeda morosa Walker, 1865 was one of several species of African moths described by Francis Walker from the collection of William D’Urban (1836–1934). Walker stated the type locality simply as “ South Africa ” but it can be presumed the specimens originated from the East London/King William’s Town area where D’Urban was based in the early 1860’s (Trimen 1887). Upon his return to England, he became the first curator of RAMM where his Lepidoptera collections were on public display as recently as the 1930s and the cabinets could be browsed by visitors at their leisure (H. Morgenroth, pers. comm.). Zolotuhin & Gurkovich (2009) could not locate the holotype in NHMUK and designated a neotype to “clear up the nomenclatural situation” (Zolotuhin & Gurkovich 2009: 37). Perhaps an assumption was made that all of Walker’s types are found in NHMUK (which is certainly not the case—there are many in OUMNH), or they were aware of the reference in Horn et al. (1990) to some of D’Urban’s South African Lepidoptera being in NHMUK via the Joicey Bequest. The neotype designation is however invalid as it was not sufficiently in accordance with the qualifying conditions listed under Article 75.3 of the ICZN (1999), namely Articles 75.3.4 (“reasons for believing the name-bearing type specimen to be lost or destroyed, and the steps that had been taken to trace it”) and 75.3.6 (“evidence that the neotype came as nearly as practicable from the original type locality”). The specimen designated as the neotype in NHMUK from Mvuma in central Zimbabwe (at an elevation of 1400 m a.s.l.) is over 1500 km as the crow flies from where D’Urban’s specimen was likely caught within the MPA in coastal South Africa. Based on the close proximity and similar habitat of MSR to the type locality of Walker’s taxon, it is believed that the figured specimen (Fig. 39) refers to the true E. morosa . It is interesting to note that a publicly available barcode (GWOSG024-10) of an ‘ E. morosa ’ specimen from eastern Zimbabwe differs from MSR, Zambian and Tanzanian specimens with PWDs of 2.2–2.7% (n=5) suggesting that the neotype specimen may refer to a different taxon entirely. The natural history stores at RAMM could not be accessed during the period of this present research but it is possible that Walker’s holotype specimen is extant, and a new neotype designation will not be made until further investigations are conducted.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/2B1887953E51FFDFDCD2F962E961FD66	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. The genus Pallastica Zolotuhin & Gurkovich, 2009 can be diagnosed from allied genera based on the curved processes of the cubile lacking any serrations or projections. In the puzzling original description of the genus, Zolotuhin & Gurkovich (2009) stated that the forewing pattern was “specific”, yet contradicted themselves by implicitly providing variation of forewing markings as an autapomorphy, whilst also noting that the male genitalia was not suitable for specific diagnoses; they concluded that the genus was “very difficult to determine” and that when more specimens were examined, a reliable identification was “impossible” (Zolotuhin & Gurkovich 2009: 16). This genus together with several other poorly-defined allied genera described by Zolotuhin & Gurkovich (2009) are in need of a full reassessment integrating genetic markers which is beyond the scope of this present paper. However, based on barcoded specimens from Mozambique and Tanzania, it is very apparent that both pale and dark specimens with differing phenotypes are conspecific and the genus contains a surplus of names to species. Prozorov et al. (2023) suggested that there were two taxa in southern Africa, with P. pallens, described from Chipata in Zambia, possibly being a species distinct from a more widely distributed eastern African taxon to which the MSR insects belong.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/2B1887953E52FFDFDCD2FB55EB71F968	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. This widespread southern African species is phenotypically variable, with the ground colour ranging from roseate-brown to greyish-brown. Both extremities of the colour-range have been described, the testaceous form as Lasiocampa prompta Walker, 1855 (holotype male from “Caffraria” examined in NHMUK) and a short while later, the greyish form as Lasiocampa plusioides Walker, 1862 (syntype female from “Natal” examined in OUMNH). These two taxa were treated as synonymous by Aurivillius (1927) and Pinhey (1975) whilst Vári et al. (2002) and Krüger (2020) considered the latter as a subspecies of the former; it is however clear that these two taxa are conspecific and the synonymy is revived thus: Sena prompta (Walker, 1855) = Lasiocampa plusioides Walker, 1862 syn. rev. (junior subjective synonymy).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/2B1887953E53FFDEDCD2FDB4E8DEFA74	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. See Agosti, D., Egloff, W., 2009. Laszlo [partially handwritten]”

Paratype ♂ (ANHRT):

[4H]— 1♂.

Diagnosis. Diapalpus smithi sp. n. is the fourth species to be described in the genus and is most similar to the type species, D. congregarius Strand, 1913 (Fig. 24) described from Tanzania and D. griseus Hering, 1941 (Fig. 23) from D.R. Congo. However, the forewing of D. congregarius is more elongate and its ground colour brown, the discal spot is more finely defined, and the dark submarginal spots are well-defined contrasting against a paler terminal fascia. In D. griseus, the forewing shape is more similar to D. smithi sp. n. but in the former, the forewing is heavily irrorated with dark greyish-brown scales, the postmedial band is indistinct and the hindwing is a paler cream. In the male genitalia, D. congregarius (Fig. 88) and D. griseus (Fig. 89) are both distinguished from D. smithi sp. n. by their noticeably shorter and apically less sharply pointed posterior, and the shorter, more rounded anterior lobe of the valve. The vinculum is considerably shorter, caudally broader and more tapered in the former two species. The phalli are similarly curved medially and tapered distally in all three taxa, however the vesicae of both D. congregarius and D. griseus lack sclerotized dentate crests. Despite the similar ground plan of the male genitalia, the single, short triangular or thorn-like medial process of the eighth sternite readily distinguishes these two taxa from D. smithi sp. n. which lacks this process and possesses a U-shaped medial notch instead. It is worth noting that the habitus of D. smithi sp. n. is particularly reminiscent of members of the Madagascan genus Raphipeza Butler, 1880 and with the knowledge that this region of coastal southern African shares sibling or even the same taxa as Madagascar (e.g., László & Vetina 2019), the type species R. turbata (Butler, 1879) was investigated further. Although the configuration of the male genital capsule is not dissimilar, the phallus-vesica complex of R. turbata is fundamentally different and Raphipeza is considered to be an allied but clearly distinct genus.

Description. Forewing length: holotype and paratype: 15 mm.

Male. Upperside. Ground colour of head, thorax, forewing and abdomen pale beige; hindwing cream. Antenna bipectinate, beige. Forewing ovoid, rounded at apex, outer margin arcuate. Anal margin with long dark brown acicular scales. Basal area with light cream scaling. Antemedial fascia dark brown, bilineate, weakly sinuate, inner of two more pronounced, arising perpendicularly from costa, and angled in cell to terminate perpendicularly along anal margin. Discal spot dark brown, half width of cell. Area between antemedial and postmedial fascia with heavy irroration of dark beige scales except around discal spot; veins R5 to 1A+2A highlighted with black scales from antemedial fascia to beyond postmedial fascia. Postmedial fascia dark brown, bilineate, crenulate (interneural concavities distad), outer of two indistinct, arising perpendicularly from costa, and angled in space M1 running broadly parallel to outer margin, terminating perpendicularly along anal margin. Submarginal fasciae dark beige, poorly-defined, running parallel to outer margin. Terminal area with two dark beige spots in spaces R5 and M1. Fringe dark beige. Hindwing rounded, outer margin arcuate; paler anally. Costal margin with dark brown irroration. Medial fascia pale beige, arcuate, indistinct. Fringe pale beige. Underside. Ground colour as on upperside except for a band of dark brown scales along anterior margin of thorax. Forewing with dark brown irroration between cell and costal margin to just beyond postmedial fascia. Postmedial fascia as on upperside but lacking crenulations and poorly-defined, becoming weaker anally. Hindwing medial fascia as on upperside but dark brown and slightly better defined. Abdomen. Eighth sternite heavily sclerotized, square, possessing two short, broad, rounded, apically finely setose distal lobes encompassing a narrow U-shaped medial notch.

Male genitalia. Uncus fully reduced; socius reduced, represented by very short bulge covered in sparse, long setae. Tegumen very short, ca. twice width of lateral plates. Juxta inverted-triangular, heavily sclerotized. Valve bilobate, anterior lobe nearly half length of posterior lobe, triangular with strongly setose ventral margin; posterior lobe narrow, gradually tapered into pointed apex, slightly curved dorsad, finely setose. Vinculum as long as valve, broad, apically rounded. Phallus short and relatively thin (ca. twice as long as vinculum), tubular, medially slightly curved dorsad; coecum penis membranous, sack-like, carina short (ca. a third of length of phallus), pointed triangular, heavily sclerotized. Vesica with two parallel, elongate serrate crests.

Female unknown.

DNA divergences. The new species has been assigned the BIN BOLD:AFG3475. When rooted with Weirdonia Prozorov & Zolotuhin, 2012, the new species is recovered as sister to the rest of Diapalpus . Intraspecific PWD was 0.0% (n=2) and diverged from D. griseus by 10.0% (n=3).

Derivatio nominis. The new species is dedicated with great pleasure to Richard Smith, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, ANHRT, whose dedication to African entomology has enabled the discovery of so many new species to science. A noun in the genitive case.

Distribution. The new species is known only from its type locality and is almost certainly endemic to the MPA hotspot.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/2B1887953E53FFD1DCD2F9A4EABEF9CA	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Preliminary investigations have revealed a complicated picture within Trabala Walker, 1856 and the genus is in need of revision. All of the Afrotropical species currently standing under the genus were described from West and Central Africa, and it is possible that this single male specimen from MSR, which constitutes a new country record and range extension for the genus, is an undescribed species. However, before any attempt is made to describe this taxon, the specific boundaries of the known taxa need to be established which is beyond the scope of this present work.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/2B1887953E5FFFD2DCD2F99BEB31F92E	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Similar to many other Afrotropical Lasiocampidae genera, Leipoxais Holland, 1893 is in need of a full holistic revision. Dissections of the male genitalia of several species revealed structurally different configurations especially in the phallus-vesica complex, suggesting the genus likely comprises several genera. Pinhey (1975), Vári et al. (2002) and Krüger (2020) list only two species of Leipoxais s.l. for southern Africa of which only one, L. emarginata Aurivillius, 1911, is described from South Africa. The other is L. peraffinis Holland, 1893 (Fig. 85), the type species of the genus described from Gabon which is absent from southern Africa (current observation). Previous references (e.g., Pinhey 1975; Vári et al. 2002) to L. peraffinis likely refer to L. acharis described from Tanzania which appears to be a widespread species throughout much of Africa. However, there is a second phenotypically indistinguishable taxon found sympatrically in East Africa which can only be separated based on genital characters and the holotype of L. acharis requires dissection for confirmation.

As part of investigations into this genus, a female syntype of the little-known Lebeda mustelina Distant, 1899 from Lydenburg [=Mashishing], South Africa was examined in NHMUK and together with a photograph of a male with similar markings from Thabazimbi, South Africa in the research collection of H. Staude, Magaliesburg, South Africa, it has become apparent that this taxon is congeneric with Leipoxais s.l. resulting in the following new combination: Leipoxais mustelina (Distant, 1899) comb. n.

A second species of Leipoxais s.l. recorded from MSR has proved to be undescribed and was recovered as sister to Rhinobombyx Aurivillius, 1879 in the barcode analysis. This result was perhaps not all that surprising—aside from its distinctive grey colouration, the habitus, wing shape, resting position and larva (see Staude et al. 2023) of the type species, R. cuneata Aurivillius, 1879 (Fig. 86) are very similar to Leipoxais . Moreover, there are close affinities in the male genitalia of the two (Figs 92–93), sharing the small overall size of the capsule, the short valval lobes, the robust triangular carinal process of the phallus and the unilobate configuration of the vesica. Based on the different ground plan of the genitalia in L. peraffinis, as well as the results of the barcode analysis, the new species from MSR is attributed to Rhinobombyx and described below.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/2B1887953E58FFD4DCD2F963E903FDDE	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Rhinobombyx maputoensis sp. n. is phenotypically reminiscent of Leipoxais peraffinis (syntype examined in NHMUK), but in the latter, the medial fascia of the forewing upperside is irregularly but strongly crenulate, a diffuse brown postmedial fascia is present and the terminal area is heavily irrorated with silvery-grey scales. In the male genitalia, L. peraffinis (Fig. 94) has ca. three times longer valval lobes where the proximal lobe is very narrow digitiform and the distal one is strongly curved caudad, and a markedly longer, sub-quadrangular cubile with a medially slightly depressed anterior margin without well-developed anterolateral processes. Additionally, L. peraffinis possesses a characteristically bilobate vesica as well as a very wide, dentate carinal plate of the phallus.

Description. Forewing length: holotype: 17 mm; paratypes: 15–18 mm.

Male. Upperside. Ground colour of head, thorax, wings and abdomen varying from russet to pale brown; body and base of wings irrorated with pale greyish-silver scales. Labial palp, long, porrect, three times diameter of eye. Antenna bipectinate, brown. Forewing elongate triangular, rounded at apex, outer margin gently arcuate with weak interneural crenulation. Anal margin with dark scales medially. Antemedial fascia dark brown, unevenly arcuate. Discal spot white, crescent- or reniform-shaped, ringed in black. Medial fascia dark brown, gently and unevenly arcuate, with paler scaling on its outer edge. Submarginal fascia dark brown, indistinct in some specimens, irregularly sinuate, indented distad in space CuA1, strongly defined on its outer edge leaving a weaker ‘shadow’ proximally. Terminal area irrorated with dark scales. Termen with pale greyish-silver scales. Fringe greyish-brown. Hindwing ovoid, costal margin with emargination, outer margin arcuate and crenulate; paler basally and anally. Costal margin with darker brown irroration. Medial fascia dark brown, faint, gently arcuate, with a paler diffuse band on its outer edge. Submarginal fascia dark brown, indistinct, irregularly sinuate. Termen with pale greyish-silver scales. Fringe greyish-brown.

Underside. Ground colour as on upperside but forewings paler; both wings irrorated with pale straw or greyish-silver scales, and generally paler distally and basally. Medial fascia as on upperside but petering out towards anal margin. Postmedial fascia dark brown, very faint, straight. Submarginal fascia as on upperside but weakly-expressed. Terminal fascia dark brown, very narrow. Hindwing medial fascia as on upperside but well-defined. Postmedial fascia dark brown, very faint, sinuate. Submarginal fascia as on upperside, but diffuse, broader and better defined.

Male genitalia. Uncus fully reduced. Socius reduced, represented by small membranous bulge bearing very long setae. Tegumen moderately long (ca. twice length of valve) with very narrow lateral plates. Juxta quadrangular, heavily sclerotized, fused with phallus with short densely setose brush-like processes basolaterally. Valve very short (ca. half length of phallus), bilobate, densely setose, proximal lobe rounded in basal two-thirds produced into a short but stout, apically rounded process; distal lobe considerably narrower basally and ca. 10% longer than proximal lobe, apex produced into a short, pointed tip. Vinculum short and broad (as long as valve base), cubile elongatequadrangular with thick, apically rounded craniolateral processes of same length as basal part of cubile and gently sinuous caudal margin. Phallus moderately thick, posteriorly dilated; carina short (a third of length of phallus), robust triangular, situated dorsally; ventral side of phallus with scobinate plate ventrally. Vesica as long as carina, inflated, without cornuti.

Female unknown.

DNA divergences. The new species is recovered in two BINs BOLD:AFG8787 and BOLD:AFG8788 with intraspecific PWDs of 0.0–2.0% (n=7). It differs from R. cuneata with PWDs of 5.6–6.8% (n=4).

Derivatio nominis. The new species derives its name from the type locality. An adjective in the nominative singular.

Distribution. The new species is known only from its type locality and is almost certainly endemic to the MPA hotspot.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/2B1887953E59FFD7DCD2FB0EEABEFAFE	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
