Type:— BRAZIL. Amazonas: “ São Paulo de Olivença”, upper Jandiatuba, 12 January 1949, fr., R. L. Froés 23887 (lectotype [designated here]: NY [barcode NY00076045!]; isolectotypes: IAN 2 -sheets No. 15834!, 42820!; NY [barcode NY00579023!]; P [barcode P01901229!]).

Notes:— The description of Tovomitidium clusiiflorum was based on a staminate specimen with buds in pre-anthesis and open flowers, which could have been erroneously interpreted as having incompletely covered buds. About forty years later, Maguire (1978) described Tovomita froesii based on a fruiting specimen. The type localities of both species are approximately the same, in the municipality of São Paulo de Olivença, western Brazilian Amazon, and their vegetative descriptions are quite similar: blade size 25–30 × 10–15 cm in T. froesii and 22–36 × 8–15 cm in T. clusiiflorum; number of secondary veins 17–20 in T. froesii and 16–20 pairs in T. clusiiflorum (not published, but measured from the type); and arrangement of tertiary veins (scalarifom on both species). Thus, we consider Tovomita froesii as a synonym of the new combination Tovomita clusiiflora.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/263B8A62FF8273526EC3F88AFC871A78	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. (Fig. 1E–I).

Notes:— The specimen of Tovomita speciosa analyzed by Adolpho Ducke had open flowers and buds in pre-anthesis, and as in Tovomita clusiiflora, the pair of external sepals seems smaller than the internal ones, leaving the internal sepals and petals exposed, which could have been erroneously interpreted as having incompletely covered buds. Moreover, the absence (or inconspicuousness) of prop roots at the base of the trunk is common in some Amazonian species of Tovomita, such as T. caloneura A.C. Smith (1939: 197) and T. volkeri L. Marinho (2016: 1129), and such characters should not be used to recognize Tovomitidium as distinct from Tovomita.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/263B8A62FF8073516EC3FF38FC5E1023	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
