06089149FF95FFD993A547ECFBC25862.taxon	distribution	Distribution: Widespread in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Turkey. In Israel it is known from a single herbarium specimen collected in the Sharon Plain near the town of Herzliya, 15 April 1926 (Eig, Zohary & Feinbrun s. n., HUJ!). It has not been found there since and it is possibly extinct in Israel.	en	Ziffer-Berger, Jotham, Leschner - R, Hagar V. 06089149FF95FFD993A54311FC705E24.taxon	description	2. Ranunculus marginatus d’Urville (1822: 318). Type: — TURKEY. ‘ in collibus circa Trapezum’, d’Urville [P]: lost. Neotype (designated here): — TURKEY. ‘ Armenia, inter Trapezuntem et Baibout’ [between Trabzon and Bayburt], May 1853, Huet de Pavillon (P! - 00186799). Heterotypic synonym: — Ranunculus trachycarpus Fisch. & Mey. var. leiodiscus Boiss. & Huet in Boissier (1856: 9). Ind. typ.: — ‘ Armenia’, Huet s. n. Lectotype (designated here): — TURKEY. ‘ Armenia, inter Trapezuntem et Baibout’ [between Trabzon and Bayburt], May 1853, Huet de Pavillon (P! - 00186799). Note: — The holotype specimen of R. marginatus has been not been seen for at least half a century, and since Davis (1959) also also has not seen this specimen, we presume it to be lost. Therefore we chose a neotype for this species, which is from the same area in Turkey and which happens also to be the lectotype of R. trachycarpus var. leiodiscus. Ranunculus marginatus is a 15 – 30 (– 50) cm tall herb, characterized by lower and middle leaves that are either simple or divided into three blunt lobes, but not dissected (Fig. 4). The achenes are short- beaked and variable in size. The achene disc is either tuberculate or smooth.	en	Ziffer-Berger, Jotham, Leschner - R, Hagar V. 06089149FF95FFD993A546DDFAF65D26.taxon	description	Homotypic synonyms: — Ranunculus scandicinus (Boiss.) Davis (1959: 156), R. marginatus Urv. var. scandicinus (Boiss.) Zohary 1: 206 (1966: 206). Heterotypic synonym: — Ranunculus trachycarpus Fisch. & Mey. var. minor Zohary (1941: 152). Type (designated here): — ISRAEL [as Palestine]: Philistean Plain, Sarona [Tel Aviv], 15 May 1924, Eig s. n. (lectotype HUJ!). This variety differs from R. cornutus var. cornutus by its narrowly margined achenes (Fig. 2, 3, 5), shorter achene beaks and the narrowly margined achene beak. The beak length varies from ½ the length of the achene disc diameter at most, to 1 / 5 and even shorter.	en	Ziffer-Berger, Jotham, Leschner - R, Hagar V. 06089149FF95FFD993A546DDFAF65D26.taxon	distribution	Distribution: — Syria, Israel, Jordan, Cyprus, Egypt and Libya. Due to the scarcity of collections from most countries in the Middle East, it is unclear how far its range extends and to what extent it is sympatric with var. cornutus. In Israel, this is the only variety presently found. Material from Israel cited as R. cornutus by Davis (1959) should be assigned to R. cornutus var. scandicinus. It is frequent in open and humid habitats in the Mediterranean region. A small form of this variety was described by Zohary (1941) as R. marginatus var. minor. Zohary (1966) synonymized this variety with R. marginatus var. scandicinus, as the " hunger form " of the latter.	en	Ziffer-Berger, Jotham, Leschner - R, Hagar V. 06089149FF91FFDD93A447ECFEB85B8A.taxon	description	Contrary to Zohary (1966), Ranunculus marginatus does not occur in Israel and the Levant. We believe that due to the difficulty of accessing the type specimen and resemblance of achenes, Zohary misapplied the name R. marginatus. All of the material from Israel identified by Zohary as R. marginatus is confirmed by us to belong to R. cornutus var. scandicinus. Herbarium material from Missouri Botanical Garden herbarium (MO) indicates that Ranunculus marginatus var. trachycarpus is naturalized in temperate and subtropical North America.	en	Ziffer-Berger, Jotham, Leschner - R, Hagar V.
