A. cumingii (Westwood, 1837)

GENERAL BODY FEATURES: coloration dorsal brownish very variable, with dark brown punctures, ventral coloration yellow brownish with dark brown punctures very conspicuous in some specimens, body entirely with fine and dense punctuation.

HEAD: Anteclypeus at level or very slightly extending beyond the paraclypei, maxillary tubercle absent, bucculae poorly developed, antennae brown with dark brown in the 4th and 5th antennomeres, first antennal segment extending beyond the distal end of anteclypeus. THORAX: pronotum trapezoid, in some specimens posterior half darker, scent of gland spout short (Fig.6), evaporatoria area with rugous aspect occupying much PLATE I. Figs. 1–2.
of metapleuron (Fig. 6), scutellum with two impunctuate zones at angles of base, hemielytra not or slightly extending beyond end of abdomen, membrane of hemielytra hyaline, with variable brown parts. ABDOMEN: Median abdominal spine very short, variable, but rarely reaching a little past posterior ends of hind coxae, connexiva with black bands at margins, wings covering connexiva or not, Pendergrast’s organs present on 6th and 7th sterna, female terminalia as in fig. 7, male genital capsule as in figs. 8–11. LEGS: yellowish with light yellow setae, more abundant on tarsi, last tarsal segment dark brown in distal half, tibiae with a brown circular patch at distal end, more conspicuous in some specimens; legs of some specimens have a dark brownish punctuation.

Ditomotarsus impluviatus Blanchard, 1852 was described from these Chilean localities: Illapel [31º 37’S – 71º 11’ W] (Coquimbo Region), Limarí [30º 36’S – 71º16’W] (Coquimbo Region), La Ligua [32º 27’S 71º 16’ W] (Valparaíso Region). No one has given new information about the species until Prado (1991), who transferred it to the genus Acrophyma (without justification). Blanchard did not designate types for his species but Signoret (probably for his Révision des Hémiptères du Chili) designated some types of Blanchard species including A. impluviata ; the specimen is one male and it is deposited in the SMNH (Figs. 3, 5); with the examination of the type specimen the combination proposed by Prado (1991) is confirmed; this male corresponds to the males associated with A. cumingii females in a large series from different localities of Chile examined by the author. Therefore, A. impluviata is the male of A. cumingii and for this reason the following new synonymy is proposed.

Acrophyma cumingii (Westwood, 1837)

= Acrophyma impluviata (Blanchard, 1852) n. syn.

The type species of Acrophyma , A. frigidula , was placed as a junior synonym of A. impluviata (Blanchard, 1852) by Prado (2008); I could not obtain the type of A. frigdula and the synonymy proposed by Prado will be correct or not, the new distribution records of A. cumingii given in this work seems to confirm the synonymy but I prefer treat it with reservations until the type of A. frigidula can be examined.

Distribution. The only known localities for this species is the type locality of A. cumingii (Valparaíso) and the localities given by Blanchard in the description of A. impluviata (Illapel, Limarí, and La Ligua), which are the distribution of the species in Chile from the Coquimbo Region to the Valparaíso Region and the type locality of A. frigidula Chubut and El Bolsón in southern Argentina; here I add a new Argentinean record from Río Negro province and new Chilean records from the Valparaíso Region, Metropolitan Region, Maule Region, Bío Bío Region, Araucanía Region, Los Ríos Region, and Los Lagos Region, expanding considerably the known distribution of this species in Chile; also I add biological information from one specimen collected on Nothofagus dombeyi (Mirb.) Oerst. (Nothofagaceae) , the first host plant record for this species.
