03B3424CEC6FFF8C4985FD8FD906FD80.taxon	discussion	Remarks. The species was described from a single dry male from southern France (Wagner 1996). It is recorded here for the first time from Portugal and Spain. In Portugal it seems quite abundant. RA was able to take images of details of male and female behaviour in the parish of Valongo (41 ° 09 ' 33.4 " N, 8 ° 29 ' 05.6 " W) that can be retrieved from YouTube. Habitat. We recorded this species mostly in dry heathlands composed typically of heather (Ericaceae), gorse and broom (Fabaceae) (Fig. 5). Adults were found mainly on exposed rocks moving around while oscillating the abdomen up and down (Figs 6 – 8). Feeding habits. Although adults of Heleodromia Haliday and Pseudheleodromia have long been suspected of being predators, this had not yet been confirmed with field observations. In the present study, RA recorded on several occasions P. haenii feeding on collembolans captured on rock surfaces. We found a large range of sizes in captured and consumed prey, from very small arthropods that are suspected to be juvenile collembolans (https: // youtu. be / NOWDy 4 m 0 JsY) to much larger collembolans several times the length of the fly’s head (Fig. 6; https: // youtu. be / nbTqo 84 QOgw). Observations suggest that, after initial prey detection through visual inspection, the predator leans forward, brings its head closer to the prey, expands its labella, and delivers a blow to the prey, snatching it from the ground to start feeding on it. When finished, the predator removes the remains of the prey from its mouthparts with the help of the fore legs and discards the prey (https: // youtu. be / 1 nKVASl-Znc and https: // youtu. be / BdSJADUZ 1 tk). On one occasion, a male was recorded visually inspecting a passing mite and ignoring it (https: // youtu. be / JZSbaRapvDs). On another, a female detected and ran towards an extremely small invertebrate and attacked it with its mouthparts, but apparently rejected it immediately by discarding it with the help of the fore legs (https: // youtu. be / oiOB _ r 4 UpRw). Intraspecific interactions. On one occasion, a male was observed slowly approaching a female from behind and suddenly jumping onto the female’s back and attempting copulation, which was rejected, as the female pulled its abdomen under the body and directed it anteriorly (https: // youtu. be / 8 l- 4 HRYbmjI). On another occasion, a female was recorded meeting a male and reacting to the male’s presence by stopping and beginning to swing its abdomen from side to side, brushing it against the wings, and waving the middle legs up and down before flying away (https: // youtu. be / 7 pluMel-Arw). We recorded a male-male interaction: after two males came face to face, one of them tried unsuccessfully to jump on top of the other. The males then faced each other again for approximately 1 minute and 16 seconds, until one of them retreated and oscillated its abdomen from side to side, rubbing it against the wings, and oscillated its middle legs up and down while trying to move away. The other male started to follow him and then jumped onto the first male’s back, apparently trying to copulate. About 1 minute and 30 seconds later, the second male moved away (https: // youtu. be / UMB 1 D 8 NiRvQ).	en	Wagner, Rüdiger, Andrade, Rui, Gonçalves, Ana (2025): Report on Brachystomatidae and Empididae (Hemerodromiinae, Clinocerinae) from continental Portugal and neighbouring countries. 03B3424CEC68FF8F4985FB96D9DCFF68.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Hemerodromia auremensis sp. nov. is related to H. planti Ivković & Sinclair (Ivković et al. 2014). It differs from that in the darker body colour and particularly by the shape of the cercus. The cercus of H. planti has a clear thorn in the distal third along the dorsal edge, not present in the new species; the basal end of the cercus of the new species is curved inward with an apical dark blunt seta not present in H. planti. Ecological notes. The type locality is situated in the valley of the Nabão River, a small river flowing through limestone terrain. The surrounding slopes are covered with Mediterranean vegetation, including species such as Quercus rotundifolia Lamarck, Quercus faginea Lamarck and Rhamnus alaternus L. Typical riparian trees, such as alders and willows, grow along the riverbank (Fig. 1).	en	Wagner, Rüdiger, Andrade, Rui, Gonçalves, Ana (2025): Report on Brachystomatidae and Empididae (Hemerodromiinae, Clinocerinae) from continental Portugal and neighbouring countries. 03B3424CEC67FF824985FE8ADFF6FA7C.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Dolichocephala. fumosa is a close relative of D. cavatica (Becker, 1889), with both species lacking an auxiliary crossvein between R 2 + 3 and R 4. Differences between species include wings plain translucent in D. cavatica, brownish in D. fumosa; the hypandrium of D. cavatica is short triangular, but is elongate rectangular in D. fumosa. Ecological notes. In Portugal, this species was discovered in a rocky stream bed (Ribeira de Dorna) (Fig. 2) by sweeping the wet surface of exposed rocks. The site is situated at an altitude of approximately 800 meters, within a forest primarily dominated by oaks. Birches and willows are also present along the stream banks.	en	Wagner, Rüdiger, Andrade, Rui, Gonçalves, Ana (2025): Report on Brachystomatidae and Empididae (Hemerodromiinae, Clinocerinae) from continental Portugal and neighbouring countries. 03B3424CEC66FF834985FE1BDF90FA06.taxon	discussion	Remarks. In the past D. guttata and D. oblongoguttata were often confused. The identity of both species remained doubtful until the type specimens of D. oblongoguttata were identified by Drake & Chandler (1997). The species are distinguished only by the male terminalia, where the clasping cercus in lateral view is straight (D. guttata) or clearly scythe-shaped (D. oblongoguttata). Both species are recorded here for the first time from Portugal. Obviously, they often co-occur at the same locality. Females cannot be distinguished.	en	Wagner, Rüdiger, Andrade, Rui, Gonçalves, Ana (2025): Report on Brachystomatidae and Empididae (Hemerodromiinae, Clinocerinae) from continental Portugal and neighbouring countries. Occiput with well-marked longitudinal stripe of whitish pruinescence. Scutum with noticeable longitudinal stripe of whitish pruinescence on posterior half (prescutellar depression) between dorsocentral lines, which extends to scutellum. Whitish-brown pruinescence also covers pleura and less noticeably elsewhere (pruinescence visible only in living specimens). Thorax. Mesonotum shiny dark brown with 5 dorsocentral (dc); 2 – 3 acrostichal (ac) setae near extreme anterior margin. Legs pale brown without remarkable setae. Wings brown translucent with numerous differently sized pale spots, not well-defined as in other species of group; venation typical for genus but without R 2 + 3 to R 4 auxiliary crossvein; radial fork (R 4 and R 5) running almost parallel. Wing length 2.8 mm, width 0.8 mm. Terminalia. Hypandrium elongate, 2 x longer than high, bent; basiphallus strong and curved; distiphallus 1 / 3 length of basiphallus; epandrium rhomboidal, longer than high, with remarkably large and strong scythe-shaped surstylus, larger than clasping cercus; clasping cercus straight, apically wider; surstylus and clasping cercus without conspicuous areas of setae, but with numerous setae of different sizes.	en	Wagner, Rüdiger, Andrade, Rui, Gonçalves, Ana (2025): Report on Brachystomatidae and Empididae (Hemerodromiinae, Clinocerinae) from continental Portugal and neighbouring countries. 03B3424CEC66FF844985F900D822FB88.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Based on the pattern of the pale spots on the brownish wing, the new species is part of the D. irrorata - group. However, in contrast to the species mentioned above, there are some differences: the R 2 + 3 to R 4 auxiliary crossvein is absent; the margins of the pale spots are diffuse; the enormously enlarged surstylus distinguishes the new species from its congeners. Ecological notes. This species has been found in watercourses of various sizes, ranging from brooks and rivulets to mountain rivers with rocky streambeds (Figs 3, 4). On one occasion, a male was recorded as prey of a salticid spider of the genus Heliophanus Koch (Fig. 10).	en	Wagner, Rüdiger, Andrade, Rui, Gonçalves, Ana (2025): Report on Brachystomatidae and Empididae (Hemerodromiinae, Clinocerinae) from continental Portugal and neighbouring countries. Vaillant collection of aquatic insects housed in the Zoological Museum Lausanne (MZLS); the specimen was mis-identified by Vaillant. Escalette is a small village in the département Hérault, NW of Montpellier. The specimen was probably collected at the well-known waterfalls. The species is mentioned from Austria, Croatia, Germany, Italy and Slovenia. The records detailed above are the first for Portugal and France. The species is related to C. wagneri Pusch from Corsica. Both species are easily separated, where the distiphallus is half as long as the basiphallus in C. wagneri, but as long as the basiphallus in C. oldenbergi; the clasping cercus is almost symmetrical in C. wagneri, but with an apical swelling in C. oldenbergi.	en	Wagner, Rüdiger, Andrade, Rui, Gonçalves, Ana (2025): Report on Brachystomatidae and Empididae (Hemerodromiinae, Clinocerinae) from continental Portugal and neighbouring countries. 03B3424CEC7CFF994985FA55DA0AF85C.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Phaeobalia lyneborgi (Sierra Nevada) and P. zwicki (Vaillant & Vinçon, 1986) (Pyrenées) are the only Phaeobalia species known to date from the Iberian Peninsula, both members of the P. inermis - group. The specimens of both appear almost identical. Vaillant & Vinçon (1986, p. 270) supposed that they might be conspecific. Portuguese material was also very similar to the specimens mentioned above; colour pattern and stigma are alike, but less intensive. Even the number and position of setae and bristles on the fore femur and the mesonotum are identical. Shape and size of the clasping cercus are slightly variable, but not sufficiently different to clearly separate the species. Finally, it is not impossible that all the above-mentioned species are synonyms of Phaeobalia dimidiata (Loew 1869); this question can be solved only by comparison with the type material. So far as we know, it is new for Portugal.	en	Wagner, Rüdiger, Andrade, Rui, Gonçalves, Ana (2025): Report on Brachystomatidae and Empididae (Hemerodromiinae, Clinocerinae) from continental Portugal and neighbouring countries.
