Protearomyia jonesi MacGowan & Reimann , sp. nov.

(Figs. 1–4)

Description. Holotype Male: Head: Eyes bare. Frons 0.5x width of an eye, matt black, covered with a quite dense grey dusting which extends less intensely onto the lunule, parafacials and face. Frontal setae in a linear row of 8–9 pairs, these becoming slightly longer anteriorly where they are 0.3x as long as the orbital seta. A scattering of interfrontal setulae between these rows. Lunule bare. Antennae completely black, postpedicel length to depth ratio 1.35:1, arista microscopically pubescent. Anterior genal setulae in a single row of 5 along the mouth margin. Palpi black with a strong apical seta.

Thorax: dorsum sub-shining black, sparsely grey dusted, sparsely covered in relatively strong setulae at most 0.4x length of orbital seta. Anepisternum more heavily grey dusted, with 3 setae arranged in a vertical row along the posterior margin, no apparent anterior setae, remainder of sclerite covered in a scattering of approximately 10 setulae. Katepisternum grey dusted, bare apart from a row of 4 setae near to and parallel with the dorsal margin on right side and 3 setae on the left side. One seta on proepimeron and one on proepisternum. Scutellum: disc subshining black, covered with a thin layer of greyish dusting, margin bare apart from four long, strong setulae, their length approximately 2x depth of the scutellum. Wing: membrane clear, slightly yellowish anteriorly and basally, veins yellow, wing length approximately 3.2mm. Calypteres pale with a fringe of dark hairs. Legs, including the ventral fringe on t1, entirely black.

Abdomen: tergites black, completely dusted grey. Covered in setulae, their length almost 0.5× the length of the fourth tergite. Each tergite with a posterior row of slightly longer setulae. Fifth tergite rounded triangular in dorsal view, length 3x the length of the fourth tergite.

Male terminalia: (Figs. 1–4) Hypoproct forming a long, slender, sclerotised curving rod within the shell of the epandrium, the rod splitting to form a pair of broadened apical lobes which appear roughly triangular in posterior view with a few setae on the outer margins. The ventral margin of each lobe extended into two similar sized pointed projections (one lateral and one medial), a single long, pale seta extending ventrally from the medial margin. Cerci fused ventrally, in posterior view two lines bearing long setulae diverge dorsally. Ventral lobe of epandrium square in shape, ventrally and anteriorly only slightly protruding from the shell of the epandrium, with a group of 8–10 very long, pale setulae at posteroventral angle. Phallus simple, gradually tapering towards apex from a deeper basal portion (fig. 3 & 4). Parameres coalescent medially, their junction in lateral view with an L-shaped ventral projection, lateral arms simple, without processes or ornamentation (Fig. 3).

Etymology: The specific epithet refers to Nigel Jones, collector of one of the paratypes which initiated the process of producing this paper.

Remarks: With the ventral lobe of the epandrium being square-shaped and not extending to any significant amount anteriorly from the shell of the epandrium this species belongs to the Protearomyia withersi species-group which also includes P. rameli MacGowan, 2014 , P iberica MacGowan, 2014 and P. occidentalis MacGowan, 2016 . It is however clearly distinguished from these species by the shape of the apical portion of the hypoproct.

Palearctic species. The distributional data were taken from literature (Morge 1962; McAlpine 1983; Máca et al. 2005; MacGowan & Freidberg 2008; Kahanpää & Winqvist 2014; MacGowan 2014, 2015a, 2015b, 2020; MacGowan et al. 2016, 2021; Reimann & Stuke 2016) or from yet unpublished records of the authors.

Distribution maps for each species can be found at Lonchaeidae online (MacGowan 2020) and will be updated as further records become available.

Genus Protearomyia McAlpine.

Protearomyia McAlpine, 1962 . The evolution of the Lonchaeidae (Diptera): 92. Type-species: Lonchaea obscura Walker, 1837 : Transactions of the Linnean Society London, 17: 357 (by original designation).

Remarks: The genus Protearomyia was erected and the species P. greciana described in J. F. McAlpine’s PhD thesis (McAlpine 1962). In normal circumstances this would not meet the criteria of the I.C.Z.N. code for publication of a genus or species name. However, McAlpine (1983: 885 footnote) justified the validity of these names by using the criteria set out by Nicholson (1980) stating that “multiple identical copies of this particular thesis have been printed and distributed since the original edition was deposited in 1962. Its availability as a demand publication was published in Dissertation Abstracts the same year. It has subsequently been used and cited as a scientific reference by many workers, and is accepted here as being effectively published ” thereby relegating Priscoearomyia Morge, 1963 to the status of junior synonym.

Distribution: C zech Republic (southern Moravia), Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Greece, Poland, Spain, Turkey.

Remarks: P. greciana is most common in Mediterranean areas and less so further north, although recently the species has been recorded several times in the Germany states of Bavaria, Hesse and Saxony, (unpublished data). Habitat preferences are not clearly understood but McAlpine (1983) mentions that the type material was captured in an oak forest in Greece. MacGowan & Freidberg (2008) also list a specimen as being captured on oak and at altitudes of up to 1100 m in Israel. Most of the German specimens were found in dry pine-beech forests or more moist areas with many poplar trees, but there are also records from dry grasslands. Localities in Czech Republic include forest-steppe with oak forest; forest-steppe; damp meadow and edge of lowland wood near a pond (Máca et al. 2005). Adults have been recorded between April and June.

Distribution: Israel, Turkey.

There is little specific habitat information although MacGowan & Freidberg (2008) note that on Mt. Hermon, Israel the specimens in the type series were probably swept from three species of oak: Quercus boissieri Reut. , Q. cerris L., and Q. libani Oliv. This species seems to prefer higher altitudes, in Israel records are from above 1500 m (MacGowan & Freidberg 2008) and Turkish records are from over 1200m. Most specimens have been captured in May, but the flight period extends until the end of June.

Distribution: Andorra, Austria, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Russia (Leningrad Oblast, Mordovia), Spain, United Kingdom.

Remarks: According to Morge (1962: 397) the Holotype is in good condition, but its capture locality is unknown. However, Kovalev & Morge (1984) state it as Germany? Despite the Holotype being a female, we consider that females of the genus are not currently attributable to species and as a result, with some five Protearomyia species now being known from Germany, future investigation of the holotype may be required.

P. nigra was until recently the only Protearomyia species known in Europe apart from in Mediterranean areas and as a result it was often recorded without examination of the male terminalia or from females. With several cryptic species under this name now having been described we only list here the distribution data for specimens which we have examined or were listed by McAlpine (1983). In the British Isles P. nigra adults have been recorded from a wide range of sites and habitat types that include woodland, parkland, scattered trees within rough grassland, a recent tree plantation bordering an active sand quarry, scrub woodland and grassland on a power station ash waste site and a suburban garden. Many of the German records are associated to habitats close to small creeks or swamp areas, but there are also records from pasture and shrubs in altitudes up to 2200 m.

European and British capture data indicate that Protearomyia nigra is also found as early as April, but its flight period extends later in the season with records into August. MacGowan (2016) records P. nigra in the Parco Nazionale dello Stelvio, Italy occurring at altitudes of between and 940 and 2315 m, when no other lonchaeids were recorded above 1630 m. Probably due to the ease of capture of the adults by sweeping or whilst they are feeding on flowers this species is often one of the best represented of the Lonchaeidae in museum collections. We do however recommend that specimens in museum collections standing as P. nigra be re-examined in order to obtain a better understanding of the distribution of the genus in the Palearctic.

The Swedish specimens were from nearer to sea level in a Malaise trap in an area of heath and pasture (MacGowan 2014). The German records come from a variety of different habitats, mostly captured by Malaise traps in mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forests, oak forests, pastures and dry grasslands in altitudes up to 400 m. The majority of specimens were captured in April and July.

Remarks: In the British Isles this species shows strong preference for ancient woodland sites and parkland containing veteran trees although due to what we know of the larval preferences, this may be due more to the undisturbed pasture associated with these sites rather than the trees themselves. Swedish records include capture in heath and pasture habitat, mixed forest, broad-leaved deciduous forest and a beech forest. In Germany this species is by far the most abundant representative of the genus. It is found in habitats ranging from swamp areas to xeric grasslands, including different types of woodland, pastures, roadsides and vineyards. In western Europe P. withersi seems to be a spring and early summer species with most records of adults being collected in May and June. This species has been found at altitudes of 1000 m in France (MacGowan 2014) and up to 1600 m in Germany (unpublished data).
