A similar variability in the coloration of the flagellum is observed in other species (e.g., in C. kozlovi, see Fateryga et al. 2023a). Male genitalia of both subspecies were also examined and no differences were revealed. Therefore, C. octoannulatus hissaricus is synonymized here with C. octoannulatus .

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/039387DAFFE6B266FF4876EA95E93AB8	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Therefore, the only available specimen with his identification label is designated here as the lectotype. The lectotype is lacking some legs. Photographs of the holotype of C. pictus rufiventris (ZOBODAT 2025b), described from Iran, were examined along with its original description (Gusenleitner 1992); it fits the lectotype of C. semenovi except that C. pictus rufiventris has a somewhat richer orange pattern. The taxonomic status of C. pictus pictus Richards, 1962 described from Senegal remains unclear. Two females from Morocco were examined and no evident structural differences from C. semenovi were revealed (both females had a coloration similar to that of the lectotype of C. semenovi, i.e., slightly less extensive orange patter than that in the holotype of C. pictus rufiventris). However, according to Volker Mauss (personal communication), there is a valuable difference in the COI-5P sequences between a specimen of C. pictus from Morocco (Fateryga et al. 2023a) and three specimens from the Arabian Peninsula (Schmid-Egger 2017). Males from the eastern populations (unavailable in the present study) should be compared with those from northern Africa. Until this is done, C. pictus is provisionally continued to be treated as a separate species closely related to C. semenovi .

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/039387DAFFE3B267FF48709193A638AF	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Kostylev (1935) indicated that there were 21 females and one male of this subspecies collected in Karatau, in the vicinity of Djulek, but there are actually 25 females and one male with his identification labels. All of them can be considered belonging to the type series according to Art. 72.4.1.1 of ICZN (1999). There are no differences between C. tristiculus tristiculus and C. tristiculus karatauicus besides the coloration. The latter subspecies has a slightly more extended pattern of light color. However, there are specimens from Kazakhstan with even less extensive light coloration compared to the holotype of C. tristiculus from Uzbekistan (Fateryga, in preparation). Male genitalia of the darkest form from Kazakhstan were compared with those of the male paratype of C. tristiculus karatauicus and no differences were revealed. Therefore, C. tristiculus karatauicus is synonymized here with C. tristiculus .

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/039387DAFFFCB27AFF4875CF97B43AE0	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Kuznetzov (1923) reported a male collected in Ak-Tash on 27.VI.1922 but the date on the label of the holotype is actually 26.VI.1922. There is another male in ZMMU, with a silver disc and the same label by Kuznetzov (“ Masaris / longicornis / N. Kuzn / Typus”) but collected in Ak-Tash on 9.VII.1923 by V. Gussakovkij. This male cannot be a part of the type series, since Kuznetzov’s paper was submitted on 16.XII.1922 (Kuznetzov 1923). There is also a female in ZMMU, with a golden disc, collected in Ak-Tash by E. Smirnov and also labeled by G. Kostylev on 23.VI.1941 as the type of M. longicornis . However, no females of this species were described by Kuznetzov (1923); thus, it is also not a part of the type series. Most characters mentioned by Panfilov (1968) and Gusenleitner (2002) to distinguish it from M. longicornis show some variability with transitions between both taxa. The only discontinuous difference is the presence of red color on the first two terga of the metasoma in M. tianshanicus (absent in M. longicornis). However, it is unclear, if both taxa are just geographic color variations or reproductively isolated species. Males of M. tianshanicus should be collected and compared with those of M. longicornis . Until this is done, M. tianshanicus is provisionally continued to be treated as a separate species closely related to M. longicornis .

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/039387DAFFF5B272FF4876B694223AE0	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
