Fig. 19.

Distribution and habitat:— Xerodraba patagonica subsp. pycnophylloides is endemic to Argentine Patagonia (Chubut and Santa Cruz) and grows at 20−850 m (Fig. 13F).

Taxonomic notes:— Results of the morphological analyses show that Xerodraba patagonica and X. pycnophylloides can be separated only by quantitative characters, mainly sepal and petal lengths, and hence they are recognized as subspecies (see Results and Discussion). Finally, Boelcke’s (1984) consideration of fruit length as useful in the separation of the two taxa is dismissed based on our numerical analyses because it was strongly overlapped between them.

The specimen H.F. Comber 335 (E, K) was collected in Cerro Bayo, Argentina but the province is not consigned. There are mountains in Argentine Patagonia called “Cerro Bayo”. One of them is located in Dept. Lago Buenos Aires in Santa Cruz Province and overlap with the distribution of the species. The other locality is in Neuquén province, far north of the distribution range of the species. Since it is not possible to precisely define the origin of this specimen, we decided to exclude it from X. pycnophylloides distribution.

Specimens examined:— ARGENTINA. Province not consigned: Cerro Bayo, 25 February 1925, Comber 335 (E, K). Chubut: Dpto. Escalante, Pampa del Castillo, 2 February 1932, Castellanos s.n. (SI-167213, BA-6011).
