038487E0FFFEFF83FC90F92F9C48FB11.taxon	description	The mites were raised in vivo in a feeding system as previously described (Wang et al., 2018). Briefly a metal cage was put into a plastic storage box. Three 5 - day-old chicks were kept in the cage as host animals for mites. The birds were provided with water and fed ad libitum. Traps were made of 10 mL plastic centrifuge tubes and disposable folded breathing masks at the bottom of cage to monitor and recover mites. Petroleum jelly was evenly applied to the edges of the storage box to prevent mites from escaping. The in vivo feeding system was maintained at temperature 30 ◦ C, 75 % relative humidity (RH), with a light intensity of approximately 3600 lux for 12: 12 h (L: D) photoperiod. The chicks were housed under a protocol approved by the Laboratory Animal Institute of China Agricultural University within Beijing Animal Use and Care Association (Approval No. AW 03902202 - 2 - 9).	en	Qi, Xiaoxiao, Li, Huan, Liu, Xin, Wang, Bohan, Meng, Jiali, Liu, Qi, Sun, Weiwei, Pan, Baoliang (2023): Location of olfactory organs and architecture of gustatory organs in the poultry red mite, Dermanyssus gallinae (Acari: Dermanyssidae). 038487E0FFFDFF83FFC6F9059DE6FB5E.taxon	description	To confirm if the olfactory sensilla were located at the tips of the foreleg tarsi of mites, we varnished the tips of the foreleg tarsi of female mites (VTFM) with blue nail polish (Fig. 1 D) to prevent them from perceiving volatiles from fecal extracts. The responses of VTFM to the attractant pheromone and the potential arrestment pheromone (guanine, Aladdin) were compared with those of unvarnished female mites (UM) by Y-tube olfactometer bioassays and filter paper contact bioassays, respectively. We varnished the back of the mites (VBM) with blue nail polish in control to exclude the potential negative impacts of nail polish on the mite.	en	Qi, Xiaoxiao, Li, Huan, Liu, Xin, Wang, Bohan, Meng, Jiali, Liu, Qi, Sun, Weiwei, Pan, Baoliang (2023): Location of olfactory organs and architecture of gustatory organs in the poultry red mite, Dermanyssus gallinae (Acari: Dermanyssidae). 038487E0FFFCFF82FFC6F94D9AB2FC6F.taxon	description	In Y-tube olfactometer trials, Chi-square tests (X 2) were used to evaluate the difference of responses to fecal extract (test) and ethanol (control). In filter paper contact bioassays, two-sided binomial tests were used to evaluate the preferences of individual mites for guanine. The criterion or statistical significance was set at P <0.05, and all analyses were carried out in SPSS v 24.0. The total percentage of mites (% responding) responded to both guanine and water (control). Two-sided binomial tests were used to evaluate the preferences of individual mites for guanine (P <0.05).
