Specimens from Panguana exhibit two different morphs with regard to afa (Fig. 12a, b), while external and other genital characters are rather similar across specimens. The number of species belonging to this genus is unclear since specimens from South American localities outside Mesoamerica and Colombia have been investigated (e. g. Venezuela, Ehrmann 2002), and Mantillica sialidea Westwood, 1889 has been transferred to Thrinaconyx by Agudelo & Rafael (2014) without clearly working out the differences between the three now accepted species. Our specimen is closest to Th. fumosus Saussure & Zehntner, 1894 from Central America, being distinguished from males of that species by a very distinct, mediumsized anteroventral spine on the foretibiae situated between the two long anteroventral spines (the same structure being absent in topotypical males but not females of Th. fumosus), and by more slender tegmina. At the same time it lacks the small anteroventral spine in the proximal half of the tibia present in Th. fumosus (Fig. 20). It differs from Th. sialidea by the possession of a small tubercle on the dorsal side of the base of the median ocellus. Whether these differences just reflect the variability of a widespread Th. fumosus or justify the specific separation of Peruvian specimens must await study of more extensive series of specimens of both sexes.

Rivera & Vergara-Cobián (2017) did not list any species of this genus from Peru, but unidentified specimens were mentioned by Agudelo & Rafael (2014).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03FB7523A86DFFF8FF19FA4D45ACA3FB	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. They are also very close to A. saussurii Giglio-Tos, 1927 from the Guyanas. Only a revision of the genus can elucidate the status of the Peruvian specimens figured here with respect to the species mentioned above. Brazil, Ecuador, French Guiana, Peru.

Remarks. The females of this species are very similar to those of A. guianensis Rehn, 1906 (Fig. 38). We tentatively assigned this specimen to A. armata because it corresponds to the females of two pairs raised from oothecae obtained from a native Peruvian collector in the mid-2000s (SMNK, CSC). The male described by Lombardo & Agabiti (2001) was erroneously connected with A. armata . As pointed out by Beier (1942, misspelled as Angela “ ornata ”) and confirmed by our specimens, the male (Fig. 35) is blackish, rather small for the genus, with denticulated pronotal margins, slightly convex metazona margins, and completely dark smoky hindwings except for the typical brownish apical mark in the discoidal field. Measurements (in mm, see also Beier 1942): body 69.3, head width 4.3, pronotum length 23.1, pronotum width 2.2, prozona 4.3, metazona 18.8, forecoxa 11.1, forefemur 14.0, foretibia 5.3, tegmen length 26.6, tegmen width 3.6, ala length 32,8, ala width 14.1. The cerci of the studied specimen are regenerated, but according to Beier (1942) they are broad and with truncated apex.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03FB7523A876FFE2FF19FF4B4303A001	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Captive breeding efforts have revealed the true female of this species to be virtually indistinguishable from that of A. armata (De Haan, 1842) (Fig. 38). The males are also very similar, sharing the very broad cerci, the shortened tegmina (with respect to the alae), and the infumated hindwings without yellow markings. In the male of A. guianensis, the smoky area of the hindwing covers only the distal half, while it extends to the base in A. armata (Fig. 37). Females, on the other hand, are not unambiguously distinguishable at the moment. The ones studied by us differ from those of A. armata only in the yellow markings on the hindwing being more checkered and less clearly offset from the infumate parts.

A. guianensis is one of the most widespread species of the genus, ranging from Costa Rica to southern Amazonia. Anteroventral margin with usually 14, rarely 13 spines of very similar length, at base arranged into two rows that later merge into one, with the configuration iIiIiIiIiI(i)IiI; spines with little size difference but “I” spines bendable, “i” spines rigid; apical-most anteroventral spine long but not bendable. Genicular lobe with a spine. Anterior tibiae with 16–18 slightly decumbent posteroventral and 14–15 anteroventral spines. Metatarsus longer than remaining segments combined.

Meso- and metathorax pale green, metathorax without cyclopean ear. Mid and hind legs pale green, slightly setose. Middle tibiae shorter than corresponding femora, hind tibiae longer. Middle metatarsus slightly shorter, hind metatarsus much longer than remaining segments combined.

Wings hyaline with greenish veins, without subopaque apexes. Costal field narrow, with more or less parallel crossveins. Stigma very indistinct, elongate. Alae surpassing tegmina at rest by about 2 mm.

Abdomen simple, parallel-sided. Supra-anal plate triangular with rounded apex. Cerci pilose, with 13 segments, first cercomere consisting of a few fused segments, last cercomere with subacute apex. Subgenital plate with rounded posterior margin, styli with conical but rounded apex (Figs. 61, 63).

Ventral phallomere of genitalia (Figs. 62, 64) without sdp but with an elongate bl, and a field of small digitiform tubercles opposite of it. Left phallomere with a forked afa consisting of a strongly sclerotized, unguiform lobe pointing to the right, and a membranous, weakly sclerotized lobe to the right of it. Paa T-shaped.

Female unknown.

Measurements (in mm): body 26.7–29.4, head length 2.7–3.0, head width 4.5–4.7, antennae 14.0–18.0, pronotum length 7.1–7.8, maximum pronotum width 1.8–1.9, minimum pronotum width 1.2–1.3, prozona 2.0–2.2, metazona 5.1–5.6, forecoxa 5.1–5.5, forefemur length 6.1–6.6, forefemur width 1.3–1.4, foretibia 4.3–4.6, mesofemur 7.0–7.6, mesotibia 5.4–6.1, metafemur 7.5–8.1, metatibia 8.4–9.5, tegmen length 21.6–22.5, tegmen width 5.8–6.4, costal field 0.6–0.7, ala length 20.0–20.9.

Etymology. Named after the type location.

Differential diagnosis. Microphotina panguanensis n. sp. resembles M. viridescens and M. viridula in the shape of the pronotum and the genitalia. It can be distinguished from M. viridescens by smaller size, the perfectly hyaline tegmina without apical subopacity, and the presence (vs. lack of) an unguiform lobe on afa (François & Roy 2015). M. panguanensis can be distinguished from M. viridula by a more robust metazona (1.2–1.3 mm vs. 0.9–1.1 mm), wider tegmina (ratio 3.5–3.7 as opposed to 3.2–3.3), bl not being sinuous at base, and the distinctly T-shaped paa. M. panguanensis resembles M. vitripennis in body size and the hyaline tegmina. It can be distinguished from M. vitripennis by a lower number of anteroventral spines on the foretibiae, a more robust pronotum (ratio 3.9–4.2 as opposed to 4.6–4.8), and its different genitalia, lacking the field of distinct pilosity present on the ventral phallomere of the latter, and having a differently shaped afa.

Remarks. This species extends the distribution of the genus, previously only known from the Guyanas, to the Western Amazon. A specimen probably belonging to this species has also been recorded from Madre de Dios by Rivera (2010a).

Key to the males of Microphotina

1. Color brownish, with some lighter mottling on head, pronotum and forelegs.

Head (Fig. 73) with ocular spines and the two processes on the frontal shield distinctly developed. Pronotum elongate, with sparse tubercles in its proximal half and lamellar expansions along the margins of the metazona. Forelegs typical for the genus, anterior femora with six (right) to seven (left) postero-ventral, 16 anteroventral and four discoidal spines. Anterior tibiae with 22–24 decumbent posteroventral and 18–19 anteroventral spines. Middle and hind legs and ventral side of thorax pilose. Tegmina as in the other species, with costal field broader than half of discoidal field, widest close to the base, then gently tapering distad before sinuously narrowing at apical fourth of the tegmen. Stigma large, dark brown and shiny. Alae longer than tegmina, truncate, with a small apical lobe and undulated discoidal field apex. Abdomen elongate, sternites with a median and two paramedian projections, tergites 5 and 6 with lateral lobes. Supraanal plate trapezoid, with slightly incised apex. Cerci pilose, with 11 cercomeres, apical cercomere flattened, ovoid, incised subapically. Subgenital plate slightly asymetrical, with cone-like styli. Male genitalia (Fig. 74) with ventral phallomere elongate, with a long, sinuously curved sdp, apex of process pointing to the left. Bl with triangular apex curved to the left. Left phallomere with short paa, indistinct, rounded afa, and well-developed, only slightly pilose loa.

Measurements (in mm): body 38.0, head length 3.9, antennae 9.0, head width 4.2, pronotum length 12.4, pronotum width 2.8, prozona 2.8, metazona 9.5, forecoxa 7.4, forefemur 9.3, foretibia 7.1, mesofemur 5.7, metafemur 6.5, tegmen length 24.2, tegmen width 9.1, costal field 4.6, ala length 26.9.

Differential diagnosis. Males of M. poulaini can be distinguished from M. occidentalis and M. eseejja by their distinct genitalia. The sdp is more evenly sinuate than in M. occidentalis and points clearly to the left instead of downwards ( M. occidentalis) or to the right ( M. eseejja). M. poulaini resembles M. eseejja in the shape of bl, which is longer in these two species than in M. occidentalis, and has its apex subacute and pointing to the left. M. poulaini and M. occidentalis differ from M. eseejja by their more or less ovoid, not elongate last segment of the cercus. Other distinguishing characters of M. poulaini males are the more robust pronotum (length/width ratio 4.4) with a more elongate metazona (metazona/prozona ratio 3.4) when compared to M. occidentalis (5.4 and 3.0, respectively) and M. eseejja (4.7 and 2.7, respectively). As pointed out by Rivera (2005), M. lombardoi Roy, 2004, known only from females, will probably turn out to be a synonym of M. occidentalis .

All three species co-occur in Peru (Rivera 2005, Rivera & Vergara-Cobián 2017), but their level of sympatry remains to be evaluated.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03FB7523A846FFD1FF19FF4B469EA6B3	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. The original description of this species did not reflect its true variability, and unfortunately contained a major typographic error, prompting Roy (2005) to describe specimens from French Guiana with an allegedly different morphology as St. gallardi . The latter, known only from a female and a juvenile male, is supposedly distinguished from St. lobivertex by its more regular vertex process, longer tegmina (17 vs. 12 mm), and 9–10 instead of 8 postero-ventral spines. St. lobivertex has become better known since its original description due to additional specimens and some splendid wildlife photographs (e.g. Figs 144–145). We can complete the description of the species by stating that the shape of the vertex process can be both regular and irregular in both females and males from one population, but with more undulated margins than what is known from St. gallardi . In addition, both males and females have 8–9 posteroventral spines on the forefemur, overlapping in this regard with St. gallardi (9–10). The tegmina of our St. lobivertex female are 17.5 mm long, and photos of the type have revealed its tegmina to be in the same range. The erroneous 12 mm published in Lombardo (2000) have thus obscured the overlapping morphology of Guyanan and Western Amazonian specimens. We prefer to retain St. gallardi as a valid species, however, until more specimens of both species are found, including the hitherto unknown males of St. gallardi .

The color pattern of the ventral side of the tibiae (Fig. 78) is homologous to the pattern of Callibia (Avendaño & Sarmiento 2011, fig. 1b), thus further supporting the classification scheme of this genus with regard to Acontistini introduced by Schwarz & Roy (2019). Selected life history aspects of St. lobivertex were described by Rönisch & Schwarz (2019).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03FB7523A843FFD7FF19FE174667A682	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. As pointed out by Rodrigues & Cancello (2016), Burmeister (1838) has to be credited as the author of the species, not Stoll (1813). While a female of St. supplicaria is figured in both Stoll (1787) and the 1813 reprint, it is misidentified as St. precaria (Linnaeus, 1758) . Ecuador, Peru.

Remarks. This is a very variable species, with O. festae representing the lower and O. peruviana the upper limits of female variation. Comparison of Panguana and topotypical O. peruviana material with both original descriptions and with photographs of the types of O. festae (MRSN) and O. peruviana (MNCN), and of the male genitalia of Peruvian and Ecuadorian (Lombardo & Agabiti 2001) specimens did not reveal any distinguishing features other than size or intraspecific variation, hence the synonymy. The apex of the female tegmen is prone to variation but always more or less rounded, and not as distinctly acute as in O. acutipennis (Stål, 1877), a species which is also overall shorter and stouter. The hind femora are supposed to be slightly longer than the metazona in O. peruviana but as long as the metazona in O. festae . However, this difference is just minimal in O. peruviana and the original measurings by E. Giglio-Tos when he descibed O. festae were not particularly accurate, so it is not evident how stringently he understood “as long as”. In most specimens investigated by us the hind femora are slightly (≤ 1 mm) longer than the metazona.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03FB7523A857FFC2FF19FF4B468FA233	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
