Genus Pacificulla Park , gen. nov.

Type species: Pacificulla flaviagera Park , sp. nov.

Description. Head: Usually dark brown or orange white. Antenna usually fasciculate- ciliated with whitish hairs on flagellum, cilia sometimes absent. Labial palpus sexually dimorphic: male with second segment normally thickened, extremely long, with acute apex, third segment reduced or absent (Fig. 21); female with second and third segments slender, third as long as second or shorter than second. Thorax: usually dark brown or orange white dorsally. Forewing and hindwing with similar color pattern and markings, dark brown or purplish brown fascia in basal and posterior parts, or a large orange or dark orange patch in middle part of wing; venation with R2 and R3+4 stalked or sometimes approximated, R5 and M2 absent. Hindwing usually broader than forewing; venation with M2 absent. Abdomen: usually orange, often blackish on first and second segments, with blackish anal tuft, sometimes fuscous dorsally throughout, with spinous zones on tergites. Male genitalia: uncus usually elongate; gnathos absent; tegumen broad; valva elongate, densely setose, sometimes with strong bristles on surface; aedeagus usually broad at base, then narrower towards apex; cornuti consist of a sheaf of bristles, occupying 1/3 length of aedeagus or shorter.

Diagnosis. Pacificulla gen. nov. is related to Crocanthes Meyrick , sharing the apomorphic characters of long antennae and the absence of the gnathos in the male genitalia. The genus is defined by a combination of morphological characters as follows: 1) Wing color and pattern similar on upper surface of fore- and hindwings, with large orange or dark orange patch in the middle of wings; venation with R2 and R3+4 stalked or sometimes approximated; R5 and M2 absent; 2) labial palpi sexually dimorphic: male usually with the second segment normally thickened, long, with acute apex, and the third segment absent or reduced; third segment unmodified in female; and 3) male genitalia with elongate valva bearing a dense patch of strong bristles on the cucullus and the aedeagus with a row or sheaf of needle-like cornuti.

Distribution. New Guinea (Papua New Guinea and Papua of Indonesia)

Etymology. The genus name is derived from the pacific with suffix, ullus.

Holotype. 3, Papua New Guinea- Col. Becker PNG 2995, Madang, Brahman Mission- 200m, 11−15 X 1992, V.O. Becker Col; gen. slide. no. CIS-5629/Park.

Diagnosis. Pacificulla flaviagera is superficially similar to P. thrasydora (Meyrick) , comb. nov. and P. philotima (Diakonoff) , comb. nov. , but can be distinguished from the latter two by the median orange patch of the forewing, the inner margin distinctly angulate at the middle, the outer margin rounded, convex; and the hindwing bearing a median orange patch, the outer margin more sharply angled on vein M1 and distinctly angulate on CuA2. The above two species were described from females and hence, cannot be compared convincingly with flaviagera because its female is unknown.

Description. Adult (Figs. 1, 15, 19, 31 c). Wingspan, 22 mm. Head: Purplish black. Antenna with rather short basal segment, dilated apically, purplish black dorsally; flagellum dark brown, fascicular ciliates with short, whitish hairs. Labial palpus with second segment normally thickened, gently recurved, evenly scaled, yellowish brown in basal 3/5, then densely clothed with blackish scales, acute apically. Thorax: Collar broadly developed, purplish brown with orange scales anteriorly. Tegula and thorax purplish black. Forewing slightly dilated posteriorly; ground color purplish black; large light orange patch from 2/5 of hind margin, not reaching costa, with rounded outer margin; costa arched beyond 4/5 length; apex obtuse; termen oblique; fringe concolorous with ground color; venation with R2 and R3+4 stalked, R5 and M2 absent, M3 approximated, M3 and CuA1 short-stalked; fringe black. Hindwing with similar light-orange patch as that of forewing, occupying median third of wing, outer margin strongly angled on M1; venation with M2 absent; apex slightly produced; fringe concolorous with ground color. Hind tibia clothed with dark orange scales all around, with blackish scales apically. Abdomen: Blackish, second and third segments orange, next four segments with orange margins; tergites II −VII with spinous zones in male.

Male genitalia (Figs. 31, 31 a −b) with uncus as long as tegumen, heavily sclerotized, slightly furrowed on ventral surface, slightly bent basally and strongly bent pre-apically, slightly dilated beyond 2/3 length, bearing minute setae; apex truncated. Tegumen broad, weakly sclerotized. Valva elongate, densely setose, especially strong setae in apical portion and on ventral margin medially; costa concave before middle, then convex; ventral margin slightly convex before middle. Juxta convex on caudal margin. Vincullum sclerotized, band-like. Aedeagus slender, with sharply produced apex; cornuti consisiting of a raw of short spines, about 1/3 length of aedeagus.

Female genitalia unknown.

Distribution. Papua New Guinea (Madang).

Etymology. The genus name is derived from the Latin, flavi (= yellow) and ager (= field).

Remarks. Pacificulla thrasydora (Meyrick, 1910) , Pacificulla philotima (Diakonoff, 1954) , and Pacificulla miltina (Durrant, 1915) , comb. nov. , are externally similar, but can be distinguished by the shape of markings on both wings from each other. P. thrasydora (Fig. 2) was described from a single male. The holotype deposited in BMNH is missing the abdomen. It is differentiated from the new species as noted above. Diakonoff (1954) differentiated P. philotima and C. xanthorrhoea , on the shape of sternite VIII in the female: a truncate caudal edge in P. philotima (Fig. 39) and an ovate caudal edge in C. xanthorrhoea (Fig. 40). However, this difference appears to be an artifact of slide-mounting, and thus, Crocanthes xanthorrhoea Diakonoff, 1954 is synonymized with P. philotima (Fig. 3). The type localities of the two are the same: Bernhard Camp, sea level 50−600 m, Papua (= Irian Jaya, Indonesia). The former was collected in July −August and the latter in April. Both types deposited in RMNH were critically compared, which confirmed that they are conspecific. P. miltina (Fig. 4) can be distinguished by the light orange median patch on the forewing more or less triangular, strongly serrated along the outer margin, and with the patch on the hindwing strongly narrowed in the basal 2/5. The holotype is deposited in BMNH, but the abdomen has not been dissected.

Diagnosis. This new species is superficially similar to P. geniola (Meyrick, 1931) , comb. nov. (Fig. 11), in size and wing pattern, but it can be distinguished by the following: the forewing with more broadly occupied brownish basal fascia, the narrower median orange patch, the whitish fringe around apex; the hindwing with small distinct dark brown spot in median orange fascia. It is also superficially similar to P. z o n i a s (Meyrick, 1904), comb. nov. (Fig. 10), which has the median orange patch on the forewing nearly parallel sided. The abdomen of P. c e r v i c a l i s is differentiated from that of P. z o n i a s by the reddish orange color dorsally, except the first and last segments, whereas it is dark fuscous throughout in the latter. The male genitalia of the new species are very similar to those of P. geniola , but can be distinguished by the more slender uncus and the more apically narrowed cucullus.

Venation similar to that of P. callisomata , with R2 and R3+4 stalked; R5 and M2 absent. Hindwing similar in color and pattern to forewing; median orange fascia broad, almost parallel sided, width about 1.5 times of that of forewing, with dark brown spot medially below costa. Hind tibia with pale orange rough scales dorsally, with pale brownish scales apically. Abdomen: Yellowish orange, except blackish first and last segment.

Male genitalia (Figs. 35, 35 a) with uncus elongate, narrowed towards apex, slightly dilated apically, bent beyond 2/3 length, with setae sparsely along lateral margin, about 3/5 length of tegumen; apex round. Valva broad at base; costa gently concave at 1/3 length; ventral margin emarginated at 1/3; cucullus narrowed towards apex, bearing dense bristles. Juxta strongly convex on caudal margin, with narrow, long, weakly sclerotized latero-caudal processes, as long as uncus. Vinculum band-shaped. Aedeagus globular basally, nearly straight, longer than valva; cornuti a sheaf of needles, about 1/4 length of aedeagus.

Female genitalia unknown.

Distribution. Indonesia (Papua).

Etymology. The species name is derived from the Latin, cervix (= neck), referring to the yellowish white collar

Diagnosis. The species is distinguished superficially from its congeners by the forewing with yellowish ground color; with well-developed dark-brown fascia, extending broadly from base to 2/3 length along the costa, narrowing towards costa; and with a dark-brown subterminal line arising from beyond 3/4 of costa and terminated before tornus.

Description. Adult (Figs. 12, 25, 30). Wingspan 19−20 mm. Head: Dark brown dorsally; face dark brown. Antenna with slender basal segment, thickened towards apex, dark brown; flagellum dark brown throughout. Labial palpus with second segment slender, dark brown all around; third segment about 2/3 length of second. Thorax: Tegula and thorax dark brown. Forewing elongate, slightly dilated distally; basal dark brown fascia, running narrowly towards costa, extending to 3/4 length of costa, with irregular lower margin; remain part yellowish orange, except terminal dark-brown fascia; discal spot dark brown, round, edged lower margin of basal fascia; dark brown subterminal line arising from beyond 3/4 on costa and terminated near tornus, followed by yellowish-orange narrow band; terminal fascia dark brown; apex rounded; termen slightly oblique; fringe concolorous, with orange-white basal line; venation with R1 arising before middle of cell; R2 approximate; R3 and R4 stalked before middle; R5 absent; M1 remote; M2 absent; CuA1 and CuA2 short-stalked at basal 1/10. Hindwing slightly broader than forewing, with dark brown basal fascia; median patch yellowish orange, with outer margin irregularly serrated; terminal fascia dark brown; apex more or less round; termen slightly; fringe concolorous, with orange white basal line; venation with Rs approximate to M1; M3 and CuA1 connate; CuA2 arising from basal 1/3 of cell. Hind tibia clothed with orange white scales dorsally, except brownish in basal 1/4; apex with orange white scales. Abdomen: yellowish orange on the first to fourth segments and then dark fuscous beyond.

Male genitalia unknown.

Female genitalia (Figs 38, 38 a) with abdominal sternite VIII weakly sclerotized, emarginated at middle on caudal margin. Antrum funnel-shaped, heavily sclerotized. Ductus bursae 2 times length of corpus bursae; posterior 2/5 length weakly sclerotized, broader; anterior 3/5 length membranous, wrinkled, coiled 2 revolutions; ductus seminalis narrow, arising from middle of posterior part. Corpus bursae ovate, finely scobinate; signum rounded, with crescent sclerotized upper portion.
