Molytophilus Hartmann, 1904

Hartmann, 1904: 388 (species included: carinatus ). Type species: Molytophilus carinatus Hartmann, 1904 fixed by monotypy.

Remarks. The herein re-defined genus Molytophilus is monotypic and its only species M. carinatus is known from two east African localities separated by about one thousand kilometres: the type locality in the Usambara mountains in northeastern Tanzania and the Genale region in vicinity of Mogadishu in south-eastern Somalia. Its current taxonomic assignment to Molytini : Plinthina (Alonso-Zarazaga & Lyal 1999) or Plinthini (Lyal 2014) suggests a close relationship with at least some of the approximately 20 genera traditionally attributed to this group (Grebennikov 2014). This hypothesis was first implicitly suggested by Hartmann (1904: 389), who noted an external resemblance of M. carinatus and “ Plinthus caliginosus ” (= Mitoplinthus caliginosus (F.), figs 15A–B in Grebennikov 2014). The subtribe Plinthina (sensu Grebennikov 2014) , like the great majority of other weevil tribes and subtribes, has never been subjected to a phylogenetic analysis and, therefore, its monophyly and the relationships of its members to Molytophilus have never been tested. Biological preferences of the genus and its immature stages are unknown.

Molytophilus carinatus Hartmann, 1904: 388 –389 (description)

Type locality: Ostafrika, Usambara.

Type specimens: Primary: Lectotype (Figs. 1A–E), male (MTD), herein designated to maintain taxonomic stability: “Usambara Speyer [handwritten, =h] \ [male sign] [h] \ Typus [h] [red label] \ Molytophilus carinatus Hrtm. [h] \ Samml. K.F. Hartmann Ankauf 1941.1 [printed, =p] [blue label] \ Staatl. Museum für Tierkunde. Dresden [p] \ LECTOTYPE Molytophilus carinatus Hartmann, 1904 V.Grebennikov des., 2013 [p] [red label]”. Secondary: 2 Paralectotypes (Fig. 1F) (MTD), each with male and female handwritten sign, respectively, same labels as lectotype, except the locality label “Usambara” is written in another hand and without “Speyer”, and with labels “ PARALECTOTYPE Molytophilus carinatus Hartmann, 1904 V.Grebennikov des., 2013” [p; yellow label]; handwritten identification label is absent. Described from unknown number of syntypes, but since “Hartmann” appears on labels of these specimens I consider them part of the type series. Non-type specimens: (Fig. 1G) 2 (MNHN): “ SOMALIA Genale, F.Bili 5-935 [p] \ Molytophilus carinatus Hartm. [h] MUSEUM PARIS 1968 Coll. A.HOFFMANN [p]”.

Remarks. For diagnostic purposes this species is easily recognized among likely all Molytinae by its characteristic habitus, along with the following three characters: 1, all tibiae with large spines on inner apical part (arrows, Fig. 1F); 2, lateral side of rostrum with deep groove adjacent to anterior edge of eye (arrow, Fig. 1B); and 3, robust antennae with narrow club (Fig. 1B). It remains uncertain in which of the two currently recognized Usambara regions, Western versus Eastern Usambara (Grebennikov 2017), the type series has been collected. Phylogenetic affinities of this species and, consequently, of the herein re-defined genus Molytophilus are entirely unknown. It appears probable that, unlike many East African Molytinae , this species does not inhabit the forest leaf litter since not a single specimen has been re-sampled in Western or Eastern Usambara during my recent litter sifting campaign (Grebennikov 2017).

Oreoscotus Aurivillius, 1910: 421 (species included: serratus, minor, laevis). Type species: not yet designated.

Remarks. Judging by the results of the morphological comparison of the type specimens, both of Hustache’s taxa are not congeneric with M. carinatus and have to, therefore, be transferred to another genus. Choosing such a genus requires a phylogenetic hypothesis of African Molytinae , and such a hypothesis is currently absent. To the best of available knowledge, both Hustache’s species likely belong to a possible clade distinguished by the adult prosternal canal delimited laterally by carinae and uniting Afrotropical species currently assigned to the genera Niphades Pascoe, 1871 , Oreoscotus Aurivillius, 1910 and Niphadonothus Voss, 1965 . This agrees with an earlier thought captured on one of the labels of the O. puncticollis holotype, where the specimen is related to Niphades (written perhaps by Guy A.K. Marshall, Figs 2C, D). These three genera, however, have themselves never been assessed from a phylogenetic viewpoint and their taxonomic validity is based on the pre-Henniginan typological concept. Alonso-Zarazaga & Lyal (1999) placed Oreoscotus as Molytinae incertae sedis , while Alonso-Zarazaga & Lyal (2002) transferred it to Aminyopini . Lyal (2014) included Niphades and other Aminyopini in the tribe Euderini; in this paper characters for the redefined Euderini were provided but not, however, cladistically analysed. Moreover, preliminary data suggest that the genus Niphades is widely distributed in the Afrotropical, Palaearctic and Oriental regions, has its type species in Sarawak and is not monophyletic. Considering all this uncertainty and pending further studies, both of Hustache’s nominal species originally described as Molytophilus ( affinis and puncticollis ), are herein transferred to the so far exclusively Tanzanian genus Oreoscotus to become O. affinis (Hustache, 1936) comb. n. and O. puncticollis (Hustache, 1936) comb. n.
