Herophydrus nigrescens Biström & Nilsson, 2002

Herophydrus nigrescens Biström & Nilsson, 2002: 49 was transferred to genus Hygrotus subgenus Hygrotus (s. str.) by Villastrigo et al. (2017b). Thus, this name became a junior secondary homonym of Hygrotus (Leptolambus) nigrescens (Fall 1919: 9) which was originally published in the binomen Coelambus nigrescens .

Since no synonym of nigrescens Biström & Nilsson exists, the name must be substituted by a new replacement name. This is why I hereby substitute the invalid name nigrescens Biström & Nilsson, 2002 as published in the binomen Herophydrus nigrescens by the new replacement name Hygrotus (s. str.) bistromi nom. nov. The name is a substantive in the singular genitive formed from the family name of Olof Biström (Helsinki, Finland) in honour of his exceptional contributions to entomology.

Notes: Thanks are due to the authors of Herophydrus nigrescens, Olof Biström and Anders Nilsson (Mullsjö, Nordmaling, Sweden), for agreeing in the substitution name being published here

Herophydrus ovalis Gschwendtner, 1932: 263 was transferred to genus Hygrotus subgenus Hygrotus (s. str.) by Villastrigo et al. (2017b). Thus, this name became a junior secondary homonym of Hygrotus (s. str.) ovalis (Thunberg, 1784: 19) , which was originally published in the binomen Dytiscus ovalis . The latter name is currently treated as subjective junior synonym of Hygrotus (Leptolambus) impressopunctatus (Schaller, 1783) . Additionally, Thunberg's name is an invalid junior primary homonym of Dytiscus ovalis Ström, 1768: 328 (which is a nomen dubium); however, both names are available names and enter into homonymy.

According to Biström & Nilsson (2002: 60), Hygrotus (s. str.) wahlbergi (Omer-Cooper, 1956: 363) —published in the binomen Herophydrus wahlbergi —is a subjective junior synonym and is hereby taken to substitute Gschwendtner's name.

Thus, this name became a junior secondary homonym of Hygrotus (Leptolambus) vittatus (Sharp 1884: 441) , which was originally published in the binomen Coelambus vittatus . The latter name was treated as junior synonym of Hygrotus (Leptolambus) chinensis (Sharp, 1882) by J. Balfour-Browne (1947: 438; with the subgeneric name Coelambus ) for the first time.
Hyphoporus elevatus Sharp, 1882 , and Coelambus elevatus Sharp, 1882

The name Hyphoporus elevatus Sharp, 1882 has been continuously treated as valid since its first publication until the genus Hyphoporus was lowered in rank and treated as subgenus of genus Hygrotus by Villastrigo et al. (2017b).

The name Coelambus elevatus Sharp, 1882 has been treated as valid for long time after its publication—either in combination with the generic name Coelambus Thomson, 1860 , or in combination with the generic name Hygrotus Stephens, 1828 (mostly with Coelambus as subgeneric name). In Fery (1992: 343) it was shown that this name is a junior subjective synonym of Coelambus saginatus (Schaum, 1857) , the latter being treated as Hygrotus (Leptolambus) saginatus in Villastrigo et al. (2017b) .

This homonymy is a special case because both taxa are described in one and the same work. Since no "page-priority" exists, the precedence between the two names cannot be objectively determined. By acting as First Reviser according to Article 24.2 of the ICZN (see also Articles 23.6, 52.3 and the Glossary of the ICZN 1999), I fix hereby the precedence of the name Hygrotus (Hyphoporus) elevatus (Sharp, 1882: 390) as published in the binomen Hyphoporus elevatus over the name Hygrotus (Leptolambus) elevatus (Sharp, 1882: 403) as published in the binomen Coelambus elevatus .

This First Reviser action serves best the stability of the nomenclature because the specific name elevatus Sharp, 1882: 390 has precedence over the other name and, thus, can be kept as valid. Additionally, there is no need to substitute the other name because it is a junior synonym of Hygrotus (Leptolambus) saginatus .

Notes on Herophydrus quadrilineatus Régimbart, 1895

Herophydrus quadrilineatus Régimbart, 1895:38 was transferred to genus Hygrotus subgenus Hygrotus (s. str.) by Villastrigo et al. (2017b). Hydroporus quadrilineatus Crotch, 1873: 389 was published by its author as a synonym of Hydroporus impressopunctatus Schaller, 1783 (now Hygrotus (Leptolambus) impressopunctatus (Schaller, 1783)) . Thus, at first glance Régimbart's name might be suspected being a junior secondary homonym of Crotch's name. The latter specific name is, however, not available because it was published as synonym and, thus, does not enter into homonymy (Article 11.6 of the ICZN 1999).
