The reduction of the Philippine record of U. umbilicalis to Po. umbilicalis (Ang et al. 2014) is unsubstantiated. The only Philippine specimen identified as U. umbilicalis was collected from Manila Bay by Blanco (1837, 1845, 1879). The same material used by the former was later described by Martens (1868: 47) as Zonaria gymnospora, now Padina gymnospora (Kützing) Sonder (1871: 47). Later, Merill (1905, 1918) identified Blanco’s material as Padina australis Hauck (1887: 44). The current accepted taxonomic name for Blanco’s U. umbilicalis specimen is P. australis, whose distribution is common throughout the Philippines (Silva et al. 1987).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03E2625F3005FFBCFF02D66CFA85C9E2	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
