Diagnostic characters: The species can be distinguished by the following combination of characters: The tergite IX produced posteriorly with lateral shoulders covered long setae; anal point with a mid ridge bearing short setae laterally and covered by microtrichia; and the superior volsella finger-like, covered by microtrichia and bearing 1–2 terminal setae.

Distribution: The species is widespread in Holarctic and Sino-Indian regions. It was collected by sweep net and light trap in China.

Remarks: We re-examined the holotype of Cladopelma indicum Bhattacharyay, Dutta et Chaudhuri and found some omissions and errors in original description (Bhattacharyay et al. 1985). Some characters should thus be added or corrected as: Wing length 1.18 mm; brachiolum with 2 setae; R4+5 with 2 setae apically; CR 1.21; mid leg with 12 sensilla chaetica; LR 1.88; anal point 85 Μm long; base of anal point shoulder-like without projection. Based on the shape of the hypopygium (figs 7–8) with the base of the anal point shoulder-like and without projection, the setae and microtrichia on the anal point, and the elongate, curved and pointed gonostylus, we consider the species to be a synonym of C. edwardsi .

Re-examination of the holotypes of Cryptotendipes inawaabeus Sasa, Kitami et Suzuki , Harnischia daitoheia Sasa et Suzuki , H. ginzandeeus Sasa et Suzuki , H. inadeeus Sasa, Kitami et Suzuki , H. sibacedea Sasa, Sumita et Suzuki , H. simantocedea Sasa, Suzuki et Sakai , showed that all are junior synonyms of C. edwardsi .

Diagnostic characters: According to the descriptions and figures in Tokunaga (1940) and Albu (1980), the species is similar to C. edwardsi in the shape of superior volsella. It can be separated by the triangular tergite IX and the apically rounded gonostylus.

Distribution: The species occurs in the Holarctic region. It is recorded from the Russian Far East and Japan (Makarchenko et al. 2005; Yamamoto 1997).

Remarks: The species was recorded as Harnischia viridulus from Thailand by Hashimoto et al. (1981). However, Yamamoto (1997) considered these specimens as belonging to C. edwardsi based on the redescription and illustration. Chaudhuri and Chattopadhyay (1990) and Dutta et al. (1996) published the species in Harnischia from India, but their diagnostic characters indicate that the Indian specimens also belong to C. edwardsi . Further, Wang et al. (1977) recorded Cryptochironomus (Harnischia) viridulum from Hubei Province in China, but according to their redescription and figures, it should also be C. edwardsi .

Holotype male of Cladopelma onogawaprima Sasa (NSM no. A 224: 06), Fukushima Prefecture, Aizu District, Onogawa Lake, light trap, 5– 6.viii.1991, M. Sasa.

Remarks: Based on the examination of the holotype of Cladopelma hibaraprima Sasa , we transfer the species to Cryptotendipes as the species has a short gonostylus, which is slightly swollen basally and concave mesially, and a parallel-sided anal point without setae and microtrichia (Figs 12–13). The above characters fit the diagnosis of Cryptotendipes , while Cladopelma species have elongate, curved, usually partially constricted and pointed gonostylus, and are often bearing setae and microtrichia on the anal point.

The holotype of Cladopelma onogawaprima Sasa was also re-examined. We found some errors in the original descriptions and figures (Sasa 1993). The superior volsella is slightly longer than wide, with 1–3 short setae and covered with microtrichia. However, we could not find any differences between this species and Cryptotendipes hibaraprima (Sasa) , and place it as a new synonym of C. hibaraprima .

Remarks: The species was described from Agra in India (Maheshwari & Agarwal 1993). However, the species is not included in the checklist of the chironomid from the Indian subcontinent (Chaudhuri et al. 2001). We have not seen type specimens, but based on the original descriptions and illustrations the species is tentatively transferred to Paracladopelma as it has a short gonostylus, slender, cylindrical superior volsella, and a big, pad-liked inferior volsella, characters which all fit the diagnosis of Paracladopelma .
