03E587854C006753FEDA2C34872FED79.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Blapstinus has been attributed to a variety of authors over the years, Gebein (1938) listed Waterhouse (1845) as the author and Blapstinus pulverulentus Mannerheim, 1843 as the type species. Davis (1970) listed Sturm (1826) as the author and indicated no type species had been designated. Aalbu et al. (2002) followed Davis in attributing the genus to Sturm, but did not mention a type species. Bouchard et al. (2005) correctly identified Dejean (1821) as the author of Blapstinus, but likewise did not mention a type species. Blaps punctata was the sole valid species included in Dejean’ s list, making it the type species by monotypy. This genus is widespread, common, and speciose in the New World, ranging from Canada to Argentina. In the West Indian fauna, Blapstinus is the apparently ancestral form of blapstinoids, having a long metaventrite and usually well-developed flight wings. It may be rendered polyphyletic by the other genera treated here. See Aalbu and Triplehorn (1991) for further discussion.	en	Ivie, Michael A., Hart, Charles J. 03E587854C006753FEDA2C34872FED79.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Thomas et al. (2013) used this name for Marcuzzi’ s records from Grand Cayman, but use Blapstinus humilis Casey for those they collected on the same island. This is obviously not tenable as a solution, and all these records surely belong to a single species. We have specimens of B. cubanus from Cuba that match specimens from Grand Cayman, Little Cayman, and Cayman Brac that lend support to Marcuzzi’ s identification. While it is tempting to synonymize Marcuzzi’ s species with the mainland Casey name, that is beyond the scope of our study and will be left for a future investigation. However, we will move the Thomas et al. (2013) records to B. cubanus.	en	Ivie, Michael A., Hart, Charles J. 03E587854C036756FD292E628618E98D.taxon	discussion	Remarks. This species is probably a composite that may, upon further study, prove to be several species. It occurs over a large range of islands and banks from Puerto Rico to Dominica and is extremely variable morphologically. It has even been reported from Aves in the central Caribbean (Marcuzzi 1977). It is also the most exceptional member of the West Indian Blapstinus and converges strongly with Xerolinus. The metathoracic wings are totally lost, the seventh and eighth striae are of the Xerolinus type, and the metaventrite is reduced. However, the elytra are not truly fused and are often somewhat spread in preserved specimens. The condition of ventrite I behind the metacoxae is not modified with either a distinct groove, characteristic of Xerolinus, nor marked with large pits as in other West Indian genera. The genitalia are the elongate narrow type normally seen in Blapstinus. In fact, it seems possible it is a branch of Blapstinus puertoricensis (Marcuzzi) that has lost its flight wings, although the genitalia of the two are distinct. Further study of this widespread “ species ” is required. Blapstinus opacus may key out above to Xerolinus if the elytra are closed, the male genitalia are not available, and the specimen is cardmounted. It can be reliably distinguished from that genus because of the narrow, subacute intercoxal process of the first ventrite. It lacks the characteristic groove behind the metacoxa, and it also lacks the large punctures on the ventrites characteristic of other genera. Marcuzzi’ s D. bardubensis [sic] martiniquensis is provisionally placed here. Soldati and Touroult (2014) synonymized the other subspecies, D. bardubensis guadeloupensis with B. opacus, based on the latter being common there, a conclusion we heartily agree with. The description of D. bardubensis [sic] martiniquensis differs from that “ subspecies ” in no important ways and makes it clear that it has nothing to do with Nevisia bardudensis, and in fact, is not a Diastolinus in either the previous nor current definition. The triangular intercoxal process of the first ventrite excludes it from any other blapstinoid genus, and the expanded protarsus of the male holds it in the blapstinoids. The description best fits the B. opacus complex. The only problem with this placement is that this is the first and only record for B. opacus from Martinique. Until the types are found or comparative material from Martinique is examined, the synonymy remains provisional.	en	Ivie, Michael A., Hart, Charles J. The 1962 record is from a single specimen labeled “ Cuba ” and reported to be in the Zoologische Staatssammlung, München. The 1984 record from Cuba dates to this same specimen, and the Isla de Juventud probably dates to Blackwelder (1945). 03E587854C066754FF2A2B5785B7EFA1.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Blapstinus simulans Marcuzzi, 1954 was described from Trinidad and is also recorded from Venezuela (Marcuzzi 1977). Exactly why subspecific status was attributed to this taxon from Barbados and why it relates to B. simulans is not clear, but we prefer to maintain the more narrow designation for the Barbados population, rather than follow Peck’ s (2009) unsupported use of B. simulans, until this is studied further. Marcuzzi’ s (1957) statement “ B. simulans barbadensis is presumably an extreme out post towards the Atlantic of a continental group of species (B. brunnipes group) which have no connection at all with the true Antillean species of Blapstinus ” gives us no confidence in what this taxon will eventually prove to be.	en	Ivie, Michael A., Hart, Charles J. 03E587854C0E675CFF6328858498E994.taxon	discussion	Remarks. This name is probably based on one or more specimens from Saint Barthélemy. The true identity of this species is unknown to us. Chalumeau (1982) reports the type is in the MNHN, and that Ardoin compared it to specimens from Saint Barthélemy in assigning that name to Chalumeau’ s specimens. Soldati and Touroult (2014) repeat Chalumeau’ s record without citing further specimens, but say it is common in sand at the back of the beach. The recorded provenance of the type, “ Les Antilles? ” does not exclude a Saint Barthélemy origin. Wolcott’ s (1951) usage, following Blackwelder (1945), as well as Marcuzzi’ s (1957, 1984, 1988) use of this name for records from Puerto Rico, refers to B. punctatus (see above).	en	Ivie, Michael A., Hart, Charles J. In the absence of useful information in the description of D. brevicollis, we consulted a cotype in the MHNB (Figs. 3 – 4), and we find that this species, which lacks a divided eye, also does not belong to any of the blapstinoid genera. The type is rather a member of the Stenochiini (P. Bouchard, R. Aalbu, personal communication), but the generic placement is unclear and beyond the scope of this study. Therefore, Diastolinus brevicollis Fairmaire is placed incertae sedis in the Stenochiini.	en	Ivie, Michael A., Hart, Charles J. 03E587854C0C675FFD3829D9846FEA09.taxon	description	Description. Goajiria is diagnosed by the male genitalia uniquely truncate and flared (Figs. 45, 46) [not verified in D. hummelincki]; elytra strongly striate, at least intervals 3, 5, and 7 raised and subcarinate, stria 7 ending in the lateral stria and cutting off 8 (i. e., of the Diastolinus type, Figs. 43, 44); pronotum widest near middle, narrowed behind (Fig. 43); male mesofemur with patch of golden setae on the underside of basal portion (Figs. 47, 48) [not verified in D. hummelincki], often with a tooth on interior face of male profemur (Fig. 47, not present in D. margaritensis); and a pair of unique deep pits on the disc of the metaventrite (Fig. 47, 48) [not verified in D. hummelincki]. These pits, which are far more pronounced in the males, are unique in all blapstinoids we have examined and often filled with a wax-like secretion. All known species are small relative to the average Diastolinus, being 6 mm or less in length.	en	Ivie, Michael A., Hart, Charles J. 03E587854C0C675FFD3829D9846FEA09.taxon	etymology	Etymology. The genus name refers to La Guajira Peninsula, which is shared by Colombia and Venezuela, and therefore is considered feminine. The spelling Marcuzzi used is based on “ La Goajira, ” an archaic form of this name, most famously used in Henri Charrière’ s novel Papillon. We use the generic spelling of Marcuzzi (retaining the “ o ” and adding an extra “ i ”) to avoid adding to a confusing proliferation of very similar names. However, Marcuzzi (1954) named a subspecies after the peninsula without the extra “ i ”, resulting in the baffling combination Goajiria curta goajira (Marcuzzi).	en	Ivie, Michael A., Hart, Charles J. (2016): Redefinition ofDiastolinusMulsant and Rey, with a Review of West Indian Blapstinoid Genera (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae: Opatrini). 03E587854C0C675FFD3829D9846FEA09.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Marcuzzi (1986) tried to describe Goajiria as a subgenus for the Diastolinus from the southern Caribbean islands of the Netherlands Antilles and Venezuela, as well as the coastal region of Colombia and Venezuela’ s mainland. He specifically included D. curtus, Diastolinus curtus goajirus Marcuzzi, 1954, Diastolinus fairmairei Marcuzzi, 1949, Diastolinus margaritensis Marcuzzi, 1949, and Diastolinus chevrolati Marcuzzi, 1959. He failed, however, to validate the generic-group name, as he did not designate a type species, an action required for the name to be available (ICZN Art. 67.4.1). As far as we can see, no one but Marcuzzi has used the name in a taxonomic paper. Marcuzzi defined his group on the basis of being small, having unique male genitalia, and the setation of the galea, lacinia, and apex and underside of the labrum. Of these, only the unique male genitalia is of any use, the other characters being shared with various Diastolinus (including the Sellio and Ctesicles groups), Xerolinus, Platylus, Blapstinus, and Cenophorus. However, we have found the group to be a natural one, allied to Diastolinus by the form of the lateral elytral striae, but separated by a unique suite of characters and geography. Therefore, we here validate the name Goajiria Ivie and Hart new genus, with the type species Diastolinus curtus Mulsant and Rey. Goajiria is poorly documented, and not the focus of our study. It remains for a future reviser to fully explore its validity. We are simply providing a home for those extra-limital and extraneous elements previously placed in Diastolinus, so that our revision of the newly redefined members of the genus can proceed. The membership and nomenclatural history of Goajiria is summarized as follows:	en	Ivie, Michael A., Hart, Charles J. Marcuzzi’ s type series included specimens from Barbuda, Antigua, Nevis, and Saba, but in a bizarre twist, he designated the Nevis specimen as “ type. ” Therefore, the type locality of N. barbudensis is not Barbuda, but Nevis. We find that the type series of the two subspecies are mixed between the shorter, more convex specimens and the more elongate ones. No populational differences were found in this taxon, which is quite variable in shape, punctation, depth of striae, as well as density of setae (this latter possibly being effected by age). The very distinctive genitalia are the same for all populations.	en	Ivie, Michael A., Hart, Charles J. 03E587854C076755FF27290B8446E89F.taxon	discussion	Remarks. This group was described as a subgenus of Diastolinus, and the name has been seldom used. We recognize it as a genus based on the unique combination of the Xerolinus type of elytral striae and the row of large pits behind the metacoxa, while lacking the extreme morphologies of Platylus and Cenophorus. The patches of long, decumbent setae at the lateral margins of ventrites 1 – 3 delimited mesad by a bare area is unique as well.	en	Ivie, Michael A., Hart, Charles J. 03E587854C08675BFD382EC887EAEF06.taxon	discussion	Remarks. With the move of this species and Blapstinus dispar (Casey) (see below) to Xerolinus, a new genus has been added to the fauna of North America north of Mexico. Davis (1970) treated these two species as a pair in the first couplet of his key to North American Blapstinus species and noted their isolation from other Blapstinus and similarity to each other. To accommodate this genus in the key to genera by Aalbu et al. (2002), the following changes should be made to Key Q. The two species will key to 7 ′, where an additional couplet should be added:	en	Ivie, Michael A., Hart, Charles J. 03E587854C08675AFF1E2AC48692EFAA.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis. This group of flightless blapstinoid species are characterized by the anterior fusion of the seventh and eighth striae that do not reach the base of the elytron (Fig. 38); a smooth-bottomed, delimited groove on ventrite I immediately bordering the metacoxa (Fig. 41) (one exception); the aedeagus with the basal piece strongly arched and the parameres weakly sinuate in lateral view, the parameres at least slightly widened from the base to midpoint, then obliquely tapered to the rounded tip (Figs. 39). Xerolinus waterhousei is an exception, as it has a line of punctures behind the metacoxa, but has the Xerolinus type of striae and aedeagus. This large and diverse group requires further study, several undescribed species are known.	en	Ivie, Michael A., Hart, Charles J. Body oval to elongate oval (Fig. 37), convex above; black except apical antenomeres, palps, setae, and tarsal pads variable, often reddish to golden or whitish. Head transverse; variously punctate; epistoma margin emarginate; labrum visible, apically bearing 2 tufts of golden setae (Fig. 40) [must be clean to see this]; antennae with 11 antennomeres, weakly clavate (Fig. 37); eyes small, divided by genal canthus, lobes subequal or lower somewhat smaller (Figs. 37, 40); gula with anterolateral angles weakly to moderately produced (Fig. 40). Pronotum matte, disc usually finely punctate; usually widest at base, occasionally widest anterior to base; anterior margin emarginate; posterior margin bisinuate, width at base subequal to humeral width; margins beaded (Fig. 37); hypomeron variably punctate to rugose; prosternal process acute, tip weakly displaced ventrally (Fig. 40). Scutellum variable, typically wider than long, triangular to rounded behind. Elytra fused together, locked to metathorax at epimeron; humeral angles narrowed; striae variable, from nearly totally effaced to deeply impressed and strongly punctate; striae 6 and 9 approaching at base, keeping striae 7 and 8 from reaching base (Fig. 38), 7 and 8 fused or approaching, not reaching base of elytron, not deflected towards lateral margin (Fig. 38). Mesoventrite short, deeply impressed to receive prosternal process (Fig. 40). Metathoracic wings extremely reduced or absent. Metaventrite short, equal to or less than 2 / 3, usually less than 1 / 2 length of mesocoxa; variably punctate. Legs variably punctate and setose, femora clavate (Fig. 40); femora unarmed; tibiae weakly expanded from base to apex, usually unarmed, occasionally with weak tooth on inner margin; males with protarsus and sometimes mesotarsus with tarsomeres 1 – 3 expanded, densely setose beneath (Fig. 40). Abdominal ventrites variably punctate, from smooth and shining to rugose; ventrites 1 – 3 flattened or concave medially in male (Fig. 41), weakly convex in female; ventrite 1 usually with distinct, smoothbottomed grove adjacent to hind margin of metacoxa (Fig. 41), rarely with row of large punctures in this position. Aedeagus strongly curved in lateral view (Fig. 42), parameres weakly sinuate in lateral view; in dorsal view, parameres weakly broadened from base to midpoint, then tapered to a narrowly rounded apex (Fig. 39).	en	Ivie, Michael A., Hart, Charles J. 03E587854C08675AFF1E2AC48692EFAA.taxon	distribution	Distribution. The 29 described species of recognized Xerolinus species occur from South Florida through the Lucayan Archipleago and Greater Antilles (Fig. 53), with one species reaching the British Virgin Islands. For the most part, they are single island or bank endemics. The center for the described members of the genus is the Cuban archipelago, with 19 described species, but the largely unstudied Lucayan Archipelago will almost certainly exceed that. Many species remain undescribed, including species from the Bahamas, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and Great Camanoe, and many more islands remain unsampled.	en	Ivie, Michael A., Hart, Charles J. 03E587854C0B675EFF052EB284FFED9F.taxon	discussion	Remarks. The records of D. costipennis for Martinique all date to two old specimens in the ZSMG, labeled “ Martinique; Mouflet / Sammlung; Haag-; Rutenberg. ” One of these bears Marcuzzi’ s determination label of D. costipennis. The collector’ s name is actually Alfred Moufflet, who collected widely around the world as a highly decorated physician in the French Navy (Deyrolle 1866). He served a stint in Martinique, the apparent source of this label, but the species is restricted to Hispaniola. It seems to be a case of mislabeling, and the record from Martinique is rejected, absent any evidence to the contrary.	en	Ivie, Michael A., Hart, Charles J.
