Aguna a. aurunce is known from the Amazon drainage of Venezuela, southward into Peru and Brazil, whereas A. a. hypozonius occurs from extreme northern South America to southern Mexico (Austin and Mielke 1998). The two subspecies are distinguished by the larger forewing markings in A. a. hypozonius, and a slight difference in the male genitalia. I have a female from Trinidad that is compatible with either subspecies, but two males have reducedforewing markings even compared to ssp. aurunce, and a very narrow white band on the hindwing underside (a variable character in both ssp.). (2004) have shown that in Costa Rica, this “species” actually comprises 10 distinct species with different larvae and food plants, which were subsequently named by Brower (2010) based on their barcodes. I am only aware of one form of this species in Trinidad, which has been only found feeding on Senna bacillaris (Cock 1988), and matches none of the Costa Rican species. The caterpillar matches that illustrated by Sepp (1829 –1843) for Papilio fulminator Sepp, which is currently treated as a synonym of A. f. fulgerator.

Astraptes apastus apastus (Cramer, 1777)

Telegonus apastus (Cramer): Crowfoot (1893), Kaye (1904, no. 217), Kaye (1921, no. 322), Barcant (1970, no. 408)

Thymele briccius (Plötz): Kaye (1940, no. 327b), Barcant (1970, no. 417) [synonym]

Astraptes apastus apastus (Cramer): Evans (1952), Cock (1982, no. 52), Cock (1988)

Astraptes enotrus (Stoll, 1781)

Thymele enotrus (Stoll): Godman and Salvin (1893 –1901), Kaye (1921, no. 328), Barcant (1970, no. 415)

Thymele egregius (Butler): Kaye (1940, no. 327a), Barcant (1970, no. 416) [misidentification]

Astraptes enotrus (Stoll): Evans (1952), Cock (1982, no. 53), Cock (1988)

Astraptes janeira (Schaus, 1902)

Astraptes granadensis (Möschler): Evans (1952), Cock (1982, no. 54) [misidentification]

Astraptes aulestes (Cramer): Cock (1988) [preoccupied]

Mielke and Casagrande (1992) found A. janeira (Schaus) to be the oldest available name for the species previously misidentified as A. granadensis (Möschler) by Evans (1952) and Cock (1982), and then as A. aulestes (Cramer) (Steinhauser 1986, Cock 1988), which is a preoccupied name.

Astraptes alardus alardus (Stoll, 1790)

Telegonus alardus (Stoll): Crowfoot (1893), Kaye (1904, no. 221), Kaye (1921, no. 325), Barcant (1970, no. 411)

Astraptes alardus alardus (Stoll): Evans (1952), Cock (1982, no. 57), Cock (1988), Beccaloni et al. (2008)

Polyctor fera fera (A.G. Weeks, 1901)

A new island record: one female reared by S. Alston-Smith from Inga sp. (Quinam, iii.1990). I have discussed the taxonomy of this species with S.R. Steinhauser (pers. comm. 2003). He considered it a good match to P. diversa (Williams and Bell), which Evans (1953) and Mielke (2004) treat as a synonym of Polyctor fera Weeks. I therefore use the name P. f. fera here, but should the two names subsequently be shown to be different species, the Trinidad specimen is referable to P. diversa.

Nisoniades bessus (Möschler, 1877)

Pellicia bessus Möschler: Kaye (1921, no. 359), Barcant (1970, no. 463)

Nisoniades bessus bessus (Möschler): Evans (1953), Cock (1982, no. 83)

Nisoniades bessus (Möschler): Cock (1991), Cock (2004b), Beccaloni et al. Evans (1955) notes that the illustration of V. hermesia in Seitz (Draudt 1921 –1924) is of S. trangularis, and I note that the male genitalia that Williams and Bell (1931, fig. 34) illustrate for V. hermesia resemble those of S. triangularis and do not match those of V. hermesia in Evans (1955). Mielke 1994) reported that tavola had been misidentified by Evans (1955) and was another species - the one that Evans treated as Phanes hoffmanni Bell, which is restricted to Brazil and not found in Trinidad. The record of Mnasitheus simplicissima by Williams and Bell (1931) from Port of Spain, 12 Jul 1927, was overlooked by Cock (2013a). However, the treatment by Godman and Salvin (1893 –1901) in which the adult and male genitalia of Methionopsis ina are illustrated as Mnasitheus simplicissima (Evans 1955) indicates that all these records are probably in error for the common M. ina (Cock 2013a).

Wallengrenia otho (J.E. It is only known from Trinidad from a single specimen, and needs confirmation as a Trinidad taxon (Cock 2007). Given that this species is usually common in the Lesser Antilles, it seems unlikely that this is a Trinidad resident.

Saliana chiomara (Hewitson, 1867)

Thracides chiomara (Hewitson): Williams and Bell (1931)

Evans (1955) transferred this species to Saliana. Williams and Bell (1931) recorded a male from Port of Spain, 12 Jul 1927. I have not seen this specimen and overlooked this record in Cock (2003a). Since S. chiomara occurs in the Guianas (Evans 1955) and Venezuela (Bell 1946), there is no reason why it might not occur in Trinidad, nor a priori to doubt this record. On the other hand, there have been no further records, and this identification predates Evans (1955) revision and the description of several new species in this genus.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03E7081CFFEAFFDA66BD6698C6FEF8DE	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
