Pseudopipra , gen. nov.

Type species: Parus pipra Linnaeus, 1758 . Systema Naturae, 10th edn., vol. 1, p. 190, based on the ‘Cacototol’ of Seba (1735, Thesauri 2: 102, pl. 95, fig. 5), ‘in Indiis’ [= Surinam per Zimmer 1929: 87].

Diagnosis. Adult male is the only all-black piprid with a brilliant white crown and nape. Some of the black feathers of the underparts and mantle may have slight violaceous or steel blue gloss. Females and immature males are mainly uniform olive-green with slightly paler underparts, and are diagnosed by dark red irides and grey cast to crown and headsides. Relatively small-bodied, with short tail and unmodified primaries. The latter correlates with the fact that this species does not produce mechanical sounds (unlike species currently included in Pipra ).

Etymology: from the Greek ψευδος = pseudos [falsehood], and genus Pipra Linnaeus 1764 , [manakin], = the false Pipra , a name that highlights both the original confusion that surrounded the correct name for this species (see Hellmayr 1929; Zimmer 1929) and, more recently, the correct generic name.

Gender: feminine.

Monotypic.

Known species: Pseudopipra pipra (Linnaeus, 1758) .
