Type information. New Zealand, South Island, Nelson, Lake Rotoiti, track to St.Arnaud Range, under Nothofagus fusca and Nothofagus menziesii , 23 May 1968, E. Horak, PDD 27272 (holotype).

Notes. Horak & Wood (1990) described Cortinarius viscostriatus based on morphology.However, our phylogenetic analyses showed that this species should be better placed in Thaxterogaster .
