Subfamily Odontomutillinae Lelej, 1983

The taxonomic status of this subfamily has been drastically changed over the years. The genus Odontomutilla Ashmead, 1899 was placed in Mutillina by Brothers (1975). Later, Lelej (1983) established the tribe Odontomutillini within Dasylabrinae to accommodate Odontomutilla and the Australian genus Odontomyrme Lelej, 1983 . Lelej (1996c) added the genus Yamanetilla Lelej, 1996 to this tribe, which was composed of East Asian species once assigned to Odontomutilla . Lelej & Nemkov (1997) recognized the separate subfamily Ephutinae sister to Dasylabrinae , with Ephutini (composed of the New World genus Ephuta Say, 1836 and related genera) and Odontomutillini as tribes within it. However, Brothers & Lelej (2017) found a close relationship of Ephutinae to Mutillini and downgraded it to subtribal status ( Ephutina ). Odontomyrme was transferred to Dasymutillini at the same time, leaving the Ephuta group of genera (Nearctic and Neotropical) and Odontomutilla group of genera (Afrotropical, Australasian, Oriental, and Palaearctic) within Ephutina . Waldren et al. (2023) regarded them as separate taxa, the former as Ephutini in Sphaeropthalminae and the latter as a distinct subfamily. Odontomutillinae was found to be sister to ( Mutillinae + Myrmillinae ). This subfamily now includes the following four genera: Cockerellidia , Karlidia , Odontomutilla , and Yamanetilla . Cockerelidia and Karlidia are extremely rare genera and include one species each distributed in Myanmar and Thailand.

Resurrected to valid genus status by Lelej (1996c: 92). Synonymized by Lelej & Brothers (2008: 51) under Odontomutilla Ashmead, 1899 .

Diversity and distribution. This genus includes roughly 80 species known from the Afrotropical, Australasian, Oriental, and southern Palaearctic Regions ( Lelej 2002, 2005; Pagliano et al. 2020; Brothers 2022). Twenty species are recorded from East Asia.

Remarks. This genus was reviewed based on species from Africa ( Bischoff 1920 –1921), China ( Chen 1957), India ( Lelej et al. 2020), and the islands of the Pacific Ocean ( Mickel 1935). No comprehensive study has been conducted for the continental Southeast Asian species.
