Heredia, Costa Rica) for giving us free transport plus field assistance during our stay in Costa Rica and Panama (2004). We are extremely grateful to the two reviewers who bravely managed to go through our lengthy manuscript.
Furthermore, Roy Erkens also wants to thank Roger Graveson and Melvin Smith for their assistance during collecting on St. Lucia (2011) and Frank Axelrod and Christopher Nytch for their hospitality and aid in collecting on Puerto Rico (2011).
Roy Erkens is indebted to the following organisations for funding fieldwork, herbarium visits, molecular phylogenetic research, etc.: Alberta Mennega Foundation (fieldwork, conference visits and publication costs), Miquel Foundation (fieldwork), The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (fieldwork: NWO travel grant), Shell Netherlands (fieldwork by means of Personal Development Award) and the European Commission’s Research Infrastructure Action via the Synthesis Project (herbarium visit to S). Finally, Roy Erkens was supported for a substantial part of his working time on the present revision via the Innovational Research Incentives Scheme (VENI, nr. 863.09.017; NWO-ALW, The Netherlands).
Susana Arias Guerrero wants to thank the Alberta Mennega Foundation and the Hugo de Vries Fonds for funding fieldwork and herbarium visits in Colombia in 2011 and 2013.
We are also grateful to Jim Doyle for his contributions to the palynological part of the manuscript.
