CHODSIGOA SMITHII THOMAS, 1911 View in CoL

Chodsigoa smithii Thomas, 1911b: 4 View in CoL .

Soriculus salenskii smithii View in CoL – Ellerman & Morrison-Scott, 1951: 60.

Common names : Smith’s shrew; 斯氏缺齿鼩 (Sishi Quechiqu)

Type Locality: Tatsienlu (= Kangding), Sichuan, China .

Remarks: Chodsigoa smithii is another large species in this genus ( Table 3), larger than C. hypsibia but smaller than C. salenskii . Dorsal and ventral pelage is generally dark grey. Tail is longer than head–body length (112–133% of HB). Tail is not sharply bicoloured; it is covered by short hair and naked at the tip. Hands and feet white, darkening gradually to inner sides, plantar pads well separated. Skull large with a low, but dome-shaped braincase. Rostrum narrow, sharply narrowed in the front, similar to C. furva ( Fig. 7).

Chodsigoa smithii View in CoL used to include C. s. parca ( Allen, 1923) View in CoL and C. s. furva ( Anthony, 1941) as subspecies. Hoffmann (1985) recognized C. parca View in CoL as a distinct species and C. furva as a synonym of C. parca View in CoL . Chodsigoa smithii View in CoL differs from C. parca View in CoL by the former’s much larger size and different shape of rostrum, as pointed out by Allen (1923) and Hoffmann (1985).

Distribution: Previously known from Sichuan and Shaanxi. We report new localities in Guizhou and Yunnan provinces (east of the Salween River). Most records are in mid-montane broadleaved forests from 2000 to 3000 m. We captured one individual at 900 m in Fenggang, Guizhou. Chodsigoa smithii is sympatric with C. hypsibia in western Sichuan Mountains and with C. hoffmanni in Yunnan.
