Abies brachytyla Franchet (1899: 258) View in CoL
≡ Picea brachytyla (Franch.) E.Pritz. View in CoL in Diels (1900: 216)
[ Pinaceae ].
Lectotype (first-step: Rehder & Wilson in Sargent , Pl. Wilson. 2: 33. 1914; second-step: designated here):— CHINA. Sichuan [“ Sutchuen oriental: distr. de Tchen-Kéou-Tin”], 2500, P.G. Farges 806 (P barcode P00731326 [image!]); Isolectotypes: P barcodes P00731327, P00731328, P00731329, P00731330, & P00731334 [images!], K barcode K000554715 [image!], MO barcode MO-3237744 [image!], PE barcode PE 01901662, TNS barcode TNS 01114444 [image!].
Remaining syntypes: China. Yunnan [“ Les bois de Oua pin keou, sur le Ma eul chan, province du Yun-nan ”], 2500, 1889-8-7, J.M. Delavay 4129 (P barcodes P00731331, P00731332, P00731333[images!]).
Note: The current name Picea brachytyla (Franch.) E.Pritz. is based on Abies brachytyla Franch. In the protologue of Abies brachytyla, Franchet (1899) cited two gatherings ( J.M. Delavay 4129 and P.G. Farges 806) and they are to be considered as syntypes. Farjon (2010, 2017) mentioned the syntypes at P for the name of this species and indicated that a type had not been designated, however already Rehder & Wilson (1914: 33) had accomplished a first-step lectotypification by citing Farges 806 as “type” but without indicating a herbarium of deposit. Because this gathering is represented in several herbaria, to fix the application of this name, we select a specimen with cone from one of the gatherings at P (P00731326) as a second-step lectotype ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 ). Although the same specimen was annotated “Type of Abies brachytyla Franch. ” by Fu and Li in 1995 and bears a “[LECTO] TYPE” herbarium sticker, this seems never to have been effectively published until now.
