Material examined. WEST ATLANTIC: ♂ (shield length: 22.7 mm), RV Calypso , cruise Amérique du Sud 1961– 1962, stn 52, Brazil, State of Rio Grande do Sul, 31°24’S, 50°36’W, 21 m, sand, trawl, 17 Dec. 1961, neotype of Pagurus striatus var. pectinatus (Ortmann, 1892) (MNHN-IU-2025-168, removed from MNHN-IU-2017-9078, old registration number Pg2806)); 3 specimens (not sexed, not extracted from their shell), RV Calypso , cruise Amérique du Sud 1961–1962, stn 152, Brazil, 31°24’S, 50°36’W, 21 m, sand, trawl, 17 Dec. 1961 (MNHN-IU-2017-9078, old registration number Pg2806).

Distribution. West Atlantic: North Carolina ( Williams 1984) to West Indies and Gulf of Mexico, Suriname, French Guyane ( Takeda 1983), and Brazil to Argentina (Mantelatto et al. 1921); shallow water to 500 m ( Schmidt de Melo 1999).

Remarks. Given the current taxonomic ambiguity in Pagurus arrosor var. pectinatus Ortmann, 1892 because of the absence of type material and inadequate type description, the largest specimen from RV Calypso, Amérique du Sud 1961 –1962, stn 152, a male (MNHN-IU-2025-168), is designated here as the neotype to fix the identity of the species. Consequently, Pagurus arrosor var. pectinatus Ortmann, 1892 becomes a subjective junior synonym of Pagurus insignis de Saussure, 1857 and Aniculus petersii A. Milne-Edwards, 1880.

The authorship of Pagurus insignis is usually attributed to de Saussure (1858a) (e.g. Williams 1984). However, the name was already introduced in an often overlooked paper: de Saussure (1857).
