Pityrogramma ebenea View in CoL (L.) Proctor, Brit. Fern Gaz. 9: 219. 1965.
= Acrostichum ebeneum View in CoL L., nom. cons., Sp. Pl. 2: 1071. 1753.
= Pityrogramma tartarea (Cav.) Maxon, Contr. U.S. Natl. Herb. View in CoL 17(2): 173. 1913.
Range: —Antilles; central Mexico to Bolivia (CO, LP, SC); central Brazil.
Ecology: —Common; in open, rocky sites, on roadsides, landslides, rock walls, cliffs, and shrubby hillsides; 1400–3100 m.
Notes: —Proximal pinnae inequilateral, elongate on the basiscopic sides; farina white to pale yellow; distal pinnae and pinnules are perpendicular to their axes ( vs. ascending in the other species). The blade dissection is generally coarser than in P. calomelanos and allies, and the blades are thicker-textured than in P. calomelanos .
The name P. ebenea was proposed for conservation over the often-used P. tartarea by Prado & Smith (2011).
