Gigantea bistriata ( Hyman, 1962) View in CoL

Hyman (1962, as Geoplana bistriata sp. n.: 10–11, figs. 11–23; PANAMA: Chiriquí: Chiriquí and Finca Lerida)

External diagnosis ( Hyman 1962). Up to 70 mm long and 9 mm wide. Dorsal color light brown or yellowish with two black lateral stripes. The stripes unite at the anterior end, making the head blackish, but reach the yellow posterior end separately. Eyes surrounding the anterior end in a single row that widens posteriorly, forming a band of eyes occupying the marginal yellow zone and starting to decrease in number at the level of the pharynx. Pharynx at about 42 mm from the anterior end ( Figure 6a View FIGURE 6 ).

Remarks. Several specimens in Panama and Costa Rica partially match Hyman’s (1962) description. In Costa Rica, the specimens are yellowish in the middle and white on the sides ( Figure 6b View FIGURE 6 ), whereas in Panama one specimen is white in the middle and yellowish on the sides ( Figure 6c View FIGURE 6 ), and the other is orangish ( Figure 6d View FIGURE 6 ). The latter is the one that best matches the original description, but due to the distance and great difference in altitude from the location from which the species was originally described, we think this is likely a different species. The anterior end of this specimen is also not visible in the photograph, which increases the difficulty in assigning it to G. bistriata with greater certainty.
