Plantas anuales o perennes, herbáceas. Pétalos laterales normalmente –la excepción es V. cornuta L.– dirigidos hacia arriba. Estilo netamente geniculado en la base y engrosado en el ápice de manera repentina, con abertura estigmática lateral y muy visible.
