Holotype: ♂, “ DR Congo, Mai- Ndombe / Salonga NP, Ekongo camp / 02°45’23.09”S, 20°18’55.37”E, / November, 2017; leg. A., T. Prozorovs,” GS 0872 ( CGM / USTTB). GoogleMaps
Description. Male ( Fig. 6 View Figures 6–13 ). Flagellum, head, and thorax orange; tegulae with brown outer contour; abdomen orange and straw. Forewing. Forewing length: 25.5 mm. Somewhat triangular; outer margin wavy with concavities between R3 and M1, and M2 and CuA2; apex rounded. Basal area orange, medial area speckled orange and brown with small white oval discal spot, outer area speckled brown and pinkish straw divided, marginal area brown and pinkish straw. Fringe speckled dark brown and yellow. Hindwing. Somewhat trapezoid with wavy outer margin. Almost evenly brown without pattern, basally speckled dark brown and straw colored. Fringe brown. Genitalia ( Fig. 15 View Figures 14–15 ). Tegumen a band bearing elongated finger-shaped laterocaudal socii with blunt apices. Vinculum medially split with juxta forming a pair of compact somewhat lanceolate ventrolateral outgrowths. Valvae about twice longer than socii, curved, apically blunt. Juxta surrounds phallus, bears tiny dorsal outgrowth. Phallus claw-like, gradually narrows towards pointed apex, dorsoposteriorly bears large semioval apodeme. Vesica opens laterad, could not be everted, does not bear cornuti. Eighth sternite somewhat trapezoid with proportional lateral apodemes and a pair of long c-shaped mediocaudal processes. Female remains unknown.
Diagnosis. Hypotrabala oliviae sp. n. differs from closely related:
1) Hypotrabala retorta Takano & László, 2024 with overall darker coloration, concavity on outer margin of forewings, smaller discal spot, almost straight outer margin of hindwings
(compare Figs 6 and 7 View Figures 6–13 ); shorter wider socii with blunt apices, narrower tegumen, narrower valvae without apical cluster of setae, laterad opening of vesica, presenting apodeme on phallus, smaller vesica and lacking cornuti, longer mediocaudal processes of eighth sternite
(compare Figs 15 View Figures 14–15 and 19 View Figures 16–23 );
2) Hypotrabala fontainei Tams, 1953 with overall darker coloration, concavity on outer margin of forewings, smaller discal spot, almost straight outer margin of hindwings
(compare Figs 6 and 8–9 View Figures 6–13 ); shorter socii, slightly narrower tegumen, slightly shorter ventrolateral outgrowths of tegumen, smaller apodeme on phallus, shorter mediocaudal processes and apodemes of eighth sternite (compare Figs 15 View Figures 14–15 and 18 View Figures 16–23 );
3) Hypotrabala guttata ( Aurivillius, 1915) with overall darker coloration, concavity on outer margin of forewings, smaller discal spot, almost straight outer margin of hindwings
(compare Figs 6 and 10–11 View Figures 6–13 ); shorter ventrolateral outgrowths of tegumen, presenting apodeme on phallus, smaller vesica and lacking cornuti, bent processes and shorter apodemes of eighth sternite (compare Figs 15 View Figures 14–15 and 22 View Figures 16–23 ); distribution eastwards the Dahomey
Gap;
4) Hypotrabala magnimacula Takano & László, 2024 and Hypotrabala aurantiaca Takano &
László, 2024 with overall darker coloration, concavity on outer margin of forewings,
smaller discal spot, almost straight outer margin of hindwings (compare Figs 6 and 12, 13 View Figures 6–13 );
shorter socii and valvae, presenting apodeme on phallus, smaller vesica and lacking cornuti,
longer bent mediocaudal processes of eighth sternite (compare Figs 16 and 20, 21 View Figures 16–23 );
Distribution. Central Congolian lowland forests in DRC.
Biology. Adult was collected during the rainy season in October from an altitude of 350 m. Preimaginal stages unknown.
Etymology. The species is named in honor of Olivia Laurie Boncelet (Naples, FL, USA).
Acknowledgments
We are thankful to †Vasiliy Kravchenko (Tel Aviv University, Israel) for preliminary work in the Ekongo camp in March and April of 2017: setting up most traps, training local workers, and taking care of material under harsh conditions. We express our gratitude to the LuiKotale Bonobo Project leaders Barbara Fruth and Gottfried Hohmann for their help with the general curating of the insect collection from the project in Ekongo. A heartfelt thank you to LuiKotale and Ekongo camp managers Roman Keller and Alexis Louat who helped to organize, manage and maintain the daily work efforts in the camp. We appreciate the irreplaceable help of the Bekombo village people with collecting, sorting, packing, and transporting insects from Ekongo as well as with the daily routine in the camp.
We thank †John Rawlins, Kevin Keegan, and Vanessa Verdecia (CMNH), Joël Minet (MNHN), †Martin Honey and Geoff Martin (NHMUK), and †Ugo Dall’Asta (RMCA) for providing access to the material and helping to process it. A portion of the presented work was done by †Vadim Zolotuhin and Alexey Prozorov with the financial support of the Thomas-Witt-Stiftung.
