Masaris tianshanicus Panfilov View in CoL

( Fig. 24 View FIGURE 24 )

Masaris tianshanicus Panfilov, 1968: 38 View in CoL , fig. 2, ♀ (type locality: “ТЯнь-Шань: южное побережье оЗ. Иссык-Куль, Малый Джаргылчак (около Актырека), сухие холмы со степной растительностью, на цветках Thymus View in CoL ” [ Kyrgyzstan, Tian Shan, south coast of Issyk-Kul Lake, Malyy Dzhargylchak (near Aktyrek), dry hills with steppe vegetation, on flowers of Thymus View in CoL ]).

Type material. HOLOTYPE: ♀, labeled “ ИссыК-КУЛь / М. Джаргылчак / Д. ПанфиЛОв [ Issyk-Kul Lake , Malyy Dzhargylchak, D. Panfilov] / 26 VI 54 // Holotypus ♀ 1968 / Masaris / tianshanicus Panf. [red label] // Zool. Mus. / Moscow [red font]” [ ZMMU] . PARATYPES (Art. 72.4.5 of ICZN 1999): KYRGYZSTAN: Issyk-Kul Lake , Malyy Dzhargylchak , 24. VI .1954 , 2 ♀, leg. D. Panfilov [ ZMMU]; ibid., 26. VI .1954 , 1 ♀, leg. D. Panfilov [ ZMMU].

Current status. Valid ( Carpenter 2001).

Remarks. The taxonomic independence of this species is doubtful. Most characters mentioned by Panfilov (1968) and Gusenleitner (2002) to distinguish it from M. longicornis show some variability with transitions between both taxa. The only discontinuous difference is the presence of red color on the first two terga of the metasoma in M. tianshanicus (absent in M. longicornis ). However, it is unclear, if both taxa are just geographic color variations or reproductively isolated species. Males of M. tianshanicus should be collected and compared with those of M. longicornis . Until this is done, M. tianshanicus is provisionally continued to be treated as a separate species closely related to M. longicornis .
