This taxon was described from a single specimen collected at «Dunedin, Florida ». The holotype, a female, is labelled «Dunedin, Fla W.S.B. Coll. 12-4-17/Casey bequest 1925/Type USNM 47350 About USNM / breviusculus Csy. [handwritten]/ UAIC 00044048 View Materials / holotype Loxandrus breviusculus by [handwritten] R. T. Allen» .

The holotype (SBL ¼ 8.6 mm; ABL ¼ about 8.8 mm) is conspecific with specimens of L. floridanus LeConte, 1878 [NEW SYNONYMY]. This species belongs to the agilis group and is relatively easy to recognize by its large size ( 7.3–9.4 mm), the infuscated femora and tibiae, the mentum without distinct foveal pits, the distinct microsculpture on the disc of pronotum, and the elytral epipleura not markedly sinuate at level of plicae.
