Distribution. Western Atlantic—USA (Massachusetts to Louisiana), Gulf of Mexico, Brazil ( Ceará, Rio Grando do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul), and Uruguay ( Rathbun 1918; Righi 1967; Costa 1969; Williams 1984; Bordin 1987; Martins & D’Incao 1996; Melo 1996, 1998; Coelho 1997; Dall’Occo et al. 2004; Coelho et al. 2008).
Remarks. Previous records in the coast of São Paulo do not mention the specific locality or analyzed material; this occurrence is based on a bibliographic survey ( Dall’Occo et al. 2004). Recently, Palacios-Theil & Felder (2020) erected new genera to receive some Pinnixa species and including the genus Tubicolixa in which P. chaetopterana was allocated. This species is a polychaete symbiont, also found in Callichirus spp. and Callianassa spp. burrows ( Powers 1977; Abele & Kim 1986; Martins & D’Incao 1996; Coelho 1997; Melo 1998). The host dependency makes this species difficult to sample.
