This is the first documented record of this species for the state of Maranhão and, more specifically, for the Maranhão Amazon Rainforest; the description and illustration of the female are included here for the first time.
Diagnosis. A black species with yellowish-white legs, except for the anterior trochanter and femur, brownish ( Fig. 61 View FIGURES 61−68 ). Head round; cercus very short, shorter than length of epandrium ( Fig. 64 View FIGURES 61−68 ); epandrium narrower apically, with median row of thorn-shaped setae on the inner surface ( Figs 65, 66 View FIGURES 61−68 ).
Description. Female ( Figs 69–74 View FIGURES 69−74 ). Specimens collected together with male of this species, in good condition and with same color pattern as male, is herein associated with the male. Similar to male. Wing ( Fig. 70 View FIGURES 69−74 ) same as male. Terminalia ( Figs 71–74 View FIGURES 69−74 ). Tergite 7 rectangular, slightly paler than tergites 1–6 ( Fig. 73 View FIGURES 69−74 ); tergite 8 with medial internal apodeme located on anterior margin ( Fig. 73 View FIGURES 69−74 ); tergite 9+10 rectangular, divided at posterior margin ( Fig. 73 View FIGURES 69−74 ). Sternite 7 rectangular with medial internal apodeme located at anterior margin ( Fig. 74 View FIGURES 69−74 ); sternite 8 smaller than tergite 8, posterior margin folded inward ( Figs 72, 74 View FIGURES 69−74 ); sternite 10 V-shaped ( Fig. 74 View FIGURES 69−74 ). Cercus short, sclerotized with subtriangular distal portion paler in color ( Fig. 73 View FIGURES 69−74 ).

Variation. Male (n = 4). Body length 2.4–2.9 mm, mean 2.7 mm; wing length 1.5–1.9 mm, mean 1.7 mm; wing width 0.5–0.6 mm, mean 0.55 mm.
Geographical record. Brazil (Ceará and Maranhão, new record) .
Remarks. Hemerodromia brevicercata was previously recorded only from the state of Ceará, in the Atlantic Forest. However, in this study, it was also recorded from the state of Maranhão, in the Amazon Forest. This species was collected in Cândido Mendes only in June and in Centro Novo do Maranhão in November, December and February.
