Etymology. The species name is a patronym in honor of Professor José Augusto Silva Oliveira for stimulating research and other contributions to the Universidade Estadual do Maranhão.

Diagnosis. Predominantly yellow. Membranous area between segment 8 and terminalia inflated and longer than length of tergite 8; cercus triangular, slightly tapered distally in lateral view; gonocoxal apodeme prolonged; phallus with a distal membranous area, covered with tiny dark spicules, and distally with sclerotized hook-shaped process.

Thorax about 2.0X longer than wide; mesonotum with short, weak and sparse setae, except notopleuron with one longer and stronger seta.

Legs ( Fig. 34 View FIGURES 34−42 ). Pale yellow to yellow. Foreleg with C1 about ¼ longer than F1, F1 about ¾ longer than T1, t1 equal in length. Mid and hind legs with coxae, femora, tibiae and tarsi of equal length. F1 with Ff=8/23/16/5+1, black denticles arranged in two parallel linear rows, located on distal ⅔, closer to each other distally, bordered by two rows of strong setae. T1, ventrally arched, ventral surface with two rows of black, spine-like setae (17–18), T1 with strong, spine-like seta located on ventrodistal surface. All legs with short, sparse pale yellow to dark yellow setae on coxae and femora, dense on tibiae and tarsi, except for slightly longer setae distally on C1; T1 with 1 row of setae on posterodorsal surface on distal ½.

Membrane slightly yellowish, except slightly darker radial sector region, veins yellowish; R 2+3 long and straight, gently curved towards distal C vein, ~ 0.7 distance between end of R 1 and R 4; bifurcation of R 4+5 acute (~60°); distance from bifurcation of R 4+5 to bifurcation of M 1+2 about 2.0X length of R 4; R 5 about ¾ length of M 1 and subequal to size of M 2. R 5 and M 1 veins converging preapically but diverging distally; cell bm + dm short, terminating at level of R 1, about 2.0X longer than cell br. Halter pale yellow.

Abdomen ( Fig. 34 View FIGURES 34−42 ). Long and slender. Tergites brown to dark brown, except tergite 7 pale yellow; distinct setae only on posterior margin. Sternites yellow with a few scattered setae, stronger on posterior margin. Membranous area between segment 8 and terminalia inflated, longer than length of tergite 8.

Male terminalia ( Figs 36–42 View FIGURES 34−42 ). Entirely brown. Cercus subtriangular, tapered distally in lateral view ( Figs 37, 40 View FIGURES 34−42 ); left and right cercus distinctly separated anterodorsally; cercus setose externally. Epandrium narrowly rounded distally, with short setae near dorsal margin ( Figs 36, 37 View FIGURES 34−42 ). Surstylus subquadrate distally ( Figs 40, 41 View FIGURES 34−42 ). Hypandrium subtriangular ( Fig. 39 View FIGURES 34−42 ), sclerotized with short, scattered setae in ventral view. Gonocoxal apodeme long, projected beyond anterior margin of hypandrium, longer than length of terminalia ( Figs 37, 39, 42 View FIGURES 34−42 ). Subepandrial sclerite with subquadrate anterior projection and rounded median posterior process, with distal setae in dorsal view ( Fig. 41 View FIGURES 34−42 ). Phallus cylindrical, strongly sclerotized, except distal membranous area covered by tiny dark spicules and distally with sclerotized hook-shaped process; phallus extended beyond hypandrium distally ( Fig. 42 View FIGURES 34−42 ). Ejaculatory apodeme long with laterally flattened unilamellar plate, ⅔ length of gonocoxal apodeme ( Figs 37, 42 View FIGURES 34−42 ).

Female. Unknown.

Variation. Male (n = 4). Body length 2.4–3.2 mm, mean 2.8 mm; wing length 1.7–1.8 mm, mean 1.75 mm; wing width 0.4–0.6 mm, mean 0.5 mm.

Geographical record. Brazil (Maranhão).

Remarks. Hemerodromia joseaugustoi sp. nov. appears to belong to the same group of species that includes H. joanae sp. nov., H. lamellata Câmara, Plant & Rafael, 2014 , H. longilamellata Câmara, Plant & Rafael, 2014 , H. megalamellata Câmara, Takiya, Plant & Rafael, 2015 and H. membranosa Câmara, Takiya, Plant & Rafael, 2015 in having the membranous area between segment 8 and terminalia long or nearly as long as tergite 8, and long gonocoxal and ejaculatory apodemes. Hemerodromia joseaugustoi sp. nov. is similar to H. longilamellata in having the cercus subtriangular, slightly tapered distally in lateral view and epandrium narrowly rounded distally. Hemerodromia joseaugustoi sp. nov. differs from H. longilamellata by subepandrial sclerite with rounded median posterior process (subepandrial sclerite with pointed median posterior process in H. longilamellata ); phallus sclerotized with distal membranous area covered by small, dark spicules and hook-shaped sclerotized process distally (phallus sclerotized, extended slightly beyond apex of hypandrium, with apically membranous, narrow area without spicules; without hook-shaped distal process in H. longilamellata ).

Comments. Specimens of H. joseaugustoi sp. nov. were collected in Cândido Mendes in February and May and in Centro Novo do Maranhão from December to February.
