( Figs 25–33 View FIGURES 25−33 , 84 View FIGURE 84 )

Etymology. The species epithet is a tribute to Joana Gomes de Lima (in memoriam), the grandmother of the first author.

Diagnosis. Predominantly yellow. Membranous area between segment 8 and terminalia; cercus wider basally, bluntly narrower distally with pointed apex, curved up distally; subepandrial sclerite with rounded anterior projection and a medially subrounded posterior process; hypandrium subtriangular in ventral view; gonocoxal apodeme longer or nearly subequal in length the terminalia.

Holotype ♂ ( Fig. 25 View FIGURES 25−33 ). Body length 2.7 mm; wing length 1.8 mm.

Description. Head ( Fig. 25 View FIGURES 25−33 ). Black; clypeus, palpus, and proboscis light yellow; anterior ocellus larger than posterior ones. Eye shiny black, contiguous in middle facial region, with tiny, very inconspicuous setae. Frons brown, about 2.0X longer than wide, covered with dark yellow to light brown pubescence; occiput with light yellow setae, sparse yellow-brown pubescence, dense only at eye margin. Antenna light yellow, except for lighter postpedicel and stylus with light brown appearance in lateral view; scape short, about ½ length of pedicel, which is about 2.0X longer than scape; postpedicel about 2.0X longer than maximum width; stylus longer than postpedicel; scape, pedicel, and postpedicel with tiny, very inconspicuous setae. Clypeus with whitish pubescence, palpus with 2–3 distally arranged light yellow setae; labellum with light yellow, short and dense setae. Proboscis with short setae. Proboscis with short distal setae.

Thorax ( Fig. 25 View FIGURES 25−33 ). Light yellow, except for small brown details in following areas: i) dorsomedian region of prothorax and ii) anterior to notopleuron. Thorax about 2.0X longer than wide; mesonotum with sparse, short, and weak setae, except for notopleuron with one longer, stronger seta; scutellum with pair of short, strong setae.

Legs ( Fig. 25 View FIGURES 25−33 ). Light yellow to yellow. Foreleg with C1 about ¾ length of F1, T1 about ½ length of F1, tl about ½ shorter than T1. Mid and hind legs with coxae, femora, tibiae, and tarsi of approximately equal length. F1 with Ff= 7/18/14/5, black denticles arranged in 2 parallel linear rows, located on distal ⅔, closer to each other distally, bordered by 2 rows of strong setae. T1 ventrally arched, ventral surface with 2 rows of black spine setae (14, 15); T1 with strong spine setae located on ventrodistal surface. All legs with short and sparse light yellow to dark yellow setae on coxae and femora, dense on tibiae and tarsi, except for slightly longer setae distally of C1. T1 with row of setae on posterodorsal surface of distal ½.

Wing ( Fig. 26 View FIGURES 25−33 ). Membrane slightly yellowish, except for slightly darker radial sector, veins yellowish; R 2+3 long and straight, gently curved distally towards C, ~ 0.7 distance between tip of R 1 and R 4; bifurcation of R 4+5 acute (~70°); distance from bifurcation of R 4+5 to bifurcation of M 1+2 about 2.0X length of R 4; R 5 about ¾ length of M 1 and subequal in size to M 2. R 5 and M 1 convergent preapically but divergent distally; cell bm+dm short, terminating at level of R 1, about 2.0X longer than cell br. Halter whitish yellow.

Abdomen ( Fig. 25 View FIGURES 25−33 ). Long and slender. Tergites brown to dark brown, except for light yellow tergite 7; distinct setae only on posterior margin. Sternites yellow with scattered light setae, stronger on posterior margin. Membranous area as long as tergite 8 between segment 8 and terminalia.

Male terminalia ( Figs 27–33 View FIGURES 25−33 ). Cercus wider basally, bluntly narrower distally with pointed apex, curved up distally ( Figs 27, 28 View FIGURES 25−33 ); left and right cerci distinctly separated anterodorsally and setose ( Fig. 29 View FIGURES 25−33 ). Epandrium wide at proximal end and narrow distally, with short and dense setae on dorsal margin ( Figs 27, 28 View FIGURES 25−33 ). Surstylus subsquare with distal setae ( Figs 28, 31 View FIGURES 25−33 ). Hypandrium subtriangular ( Fig. 30 View FIGURES 25−33 ) in ventral view, sclerotized, with short sparse setae. Gonocoxal apodeme long, projected beyond anterior margin of hypandrium ( Figs 28, 29, 33 View FIGURES 25−33 ). Subepandrial sclerite with subrounded anterior projection and medially subrounded posterior process, with distal end setose in dorsal view ( Fig. 32 View FIGURES 25−33 ). Phallus cylindrical, strongly sclerotized, except for membranous area distally; covered with tiny dark spines; phallus extended beyond distal end of hypandrium ( Fig. 33 View FIGURES 25−33 ). Geographical record. Brazil (Maranhão).

Remarks. Hemerodromia joanae sp. nov. appears to belong to the same group of species that includes H. joseaugustoi sp. nov., H. lamellata Câmara, Plant & Rafael, 2014 , H. longilamellata Câmara, Plant & Rafael, 2014 , H. megalamellata Câmara, Takiya, Plant & Rafael, 2015 and H. membranosa Câmara, Takiya, Plant & Rafael, 2015 in having membranous area long or nearly as long as tergite 8 between segment 8 and terminalia, and long gonocoxal and ejaculatory apodemes. Hemerodromia joanae sp. nov. is similar to H. lamellata in having the cercus wider basally, bluntly narrower distally with pointed apex, curved up distally. Hemerodromia joanae sp. nov. differs from H. lamellata by having tergite 8 brown (tergite 8 yellow in H. lamellata ) and subepandrial sclerite with subrounded anterior projection (subepandrial sclerite with short triangular anterior projection in H. lamellata ).

Comments. Specimens of H. joanae sp. nov. were collected in Cândido Mendes from January to July and in Centro Novo do Maranhão from December to February.
