Conservation status — Least Concern (LC, Marinho & Beech 2019).

Nomenclatural notes — Engler (1888) indicated that the type specimen of Tovomita elliptica was deposited in K (2 sheets). For the lectotype of T. elliptica , here treated as a synonym under T. laurina , we selected the specimen K000488519, with more leaves and floral buds than K000488518.

Recognition and discussion — Together with Tovomita gazelii , T. laurina is the only species of the genus whose carpel number varies from five to seven, especially in materials from early collections at Mato Grosso state ( Engels & Marinho 2018). The species is similar to T. schomburgkii , from which it can be differentiated mainly by the size and shape of floral buds (ovoid, 5–6.5[– 10] mm vs spheroid to oblong, 3–4.5 mm long in T. schomburgkii ).
