Cicada villosa Fabricius, 1775: 684 View in CoL (original description).

Flata villosa ( Fabricius, 1775) , combination by Fabricius 1803: 52.

Oliarus villosus ( Fabricius, 1775) , combination by Stål 1869: 92.

Melanoliarus villosus ( Fabricius, 1775) , combination by implication of Holzinger et al. 2002: 129.

Remarks. This species was described as Cicada villosa Fabricius from a single female specimen (deposited in the Natural History Museum of Denmark, Fig. 39 View FIGURE 39 ) without locality information. Fabricius (1775) initially attributed the species to “America,” later specifying “America meridionalis” (= South America) in Fabricius (1803: 52). It was transferred to Oliarus by Stål (1869). Stål (1869: 93) noted that “the true home of this species probably is southern Russia, from whence I have seen a specimen agreeing with that of Fabricius” (translated from Latin in Mead & Kramer 1982: 386). Mead & Kramer (1982) stated that the species’ status is uncertain due to Stål’s comments and the poor condition of the female type specimen. However, the type specimen appears to bear hind leg spinulation ( Fig. 39C View FIGURE 39 ) consistent with Pentastiridius (e.g., Holzinger 2002, Holzinger et al. 2003) and a general habitus ( Fig. 39A View FIGURE 39 ) that matches the genus. As Pentastiridius is a Holarctic genus ( Emeljanov 2001), we doubt that the described locality of the species is accurate and the species may be Eurasian in origin.

IIc. Species of uncertain status

These two species placed in Melanoliarus by implication are described from female specimens that lack definitive diagnostic features and have no clear affinities to any of the genera described here. We regard these species as incertae sedis within Pentastirini .
