Distribution

Euro-Siberian species, better represented in the southern part of its range. In the eastern part of the range C. dubius reaches Siberia, however it is much more abundant in southern Russia, Turkmenistan, Transcaucasia, Caucasus, Iran, Syria and Israel. PUTSCHKOV (1961) cited that in certain parts of its range C. dubius was found at higher altitudes. For example, it was found at the Crimea at 1000- 1200 m, in Italy at 1100 m, in Switzerland at 2500-2600 m a.s.l. HOBERLANDT (1955) collected some specimens in Turkey at 3200 m a.s.i. (Erciyas dagi).

Remarks

This species lives in open steppe habitats, meadows, slopes, rocky ground, and is also found on forest edges, in parks and at seaside sandy shores. Microhabitat of this species is under rocks, in leaf litter and around p1ants' roots.

STICHEL (1957-1962) Jisted several p]ant-species on which C. dubius could be found: Thesium sp. , Echium vulgare, Salvia sp., Thymus sp. , Artemisia sp. , Pinus larico, Juniperus foetidissma, Juniperus communis . A large population of this species was recorded also on Osyris alba at the Maijan Mt. above Split ( NOVAK & WAGNER 1951).

In recent years, C. dubius was usually considered as a species associated with plants of genus Thesium sp. ( HEISS 1977, STEHLIK 1983, TAMANINI 1982). In Turkey, HOBERLANDT (1955) recorded some specimens under rocks in steppe and deciduous forest zones, and under Astragalus sp. in the alpine zone. Considering the vertical distribution, the species is present in ex-Yugoslavia from the seacoast to 1650 m a.s.l.

In northeastern Serbia it was found in the Deliblato Sands and Pozarevac on sandy habitats at low altitudes from 170 to 280 m. In southeastern Serbia the species is present in warm habitats in a vicinity of Nis (Suva Planina, Mt., Sicevacka Klisura, gorge) at the altitude of 1000- 1600 m. In Macedonia it is also present at altitudes above 1000 m (Vodno, Karadag), even up to 1650 m (Skopska Crna Gora).
